A little bird left me a PM chirping that we might have a few more members joining us soon. Can't wait to hear from Andrew, getluv, Lecter, and said mysterious additions. If Sembene was alive, this thread would bring tears to his eyes. Its probably the longest thread dedicated to this movie in any U.S.-based movie chat forum!

Re: Moolaade Tops indieWIRE's '04 Foreign-Language Film Poll
Finally saw Black Girl. I liked it quite a bit. Right up there with Mandabi for me, but stylistically and tonally very different. Of all Sembene's works, this one most reminded me of a dream. Music ran throughout, as did voice-over chronicling a Senegalese woman's slow demise when she moves in with a Franch family in Paris. Not as easy as it would appear on the surface, in the backgroun of this story is the middle-class French couple's lack of satisfaction with their own position in French society. Before I get to story and content, however, the real strength of this film was Sembene's style, its 'distant' wandering feel and its jarring conclusion. Even this, however, is not an end in of itself, but rather a beginning. A mask continuously appears throughout the movie first as a boy's toy, then as a gift to the french couple, then as a reclaimation by Diouana, and finally it returns to the young boy's hands once more. The boy follows the French husband as he hurridly leaves Diouana's things at her home and tries to give her wages to her mother. The same masks with animistic properties can still be seen in Moolaade, but that's one of the few similarities. It is interesting to see how much the director has changed. Not just in opinion on colonial relationships, but also in his tastes for film style. Beautiful albeit depressing, and I recommend anyone who can watch it and Mandabi if they liked Moolaade. More to come, soon. P.S.: I'm pretty sure Sembene made a cameo as the 'letter-writer' in this one, if anyone is interested in seeing him as a much younger man.

Re: Moolaade Tops indieWIRE's '04 Foreign-Language Film Poll
I'll admit at first, I was a bit hesitant. I just found the culture's way of handling these "rules" a bit odd. But it just kept getting better and what a climax that scene was with the beating!
I loved it. Great film.
I'll try to get around to writing a review sometime soon!

I ummm... have respect for Moolaade but would never watch it again. I found it a tad boring.

Oh, do tell. I actually would like to hear from someone who didn't think so highly of it. It actually went up in my estimations over repeated viewing, so I wasn't floored the first time I watched it either (gave it an A-, not an A). Plus, we could get an extra two pages and a few more viewers out of it!
