Re: Moolaade Tops indieWIRE's '04 Foreign-Language Film Poll
Great, can't wait to hear from you Zach! I think between Myself, Jon, and you, we should be able to start a film-viewing campaign of New World proportions.
*plots future tactical moves*
Too bad the last installment of the trilogy won't ever happen. Its nice to see, however, that New Yorker finally got Moolaade put into DVD the year of Sembene's death.

I shall rip scenes from the DVD that have awesome, siggie-ready screencaps. Everyone loves club siggies! It at least pretty screencaps. We should also get Rod to see it. It has a strong, empowering lead female performance - how could he resist??

Oh yes. Please make one for me, with a clear label too, but not too big, please. Maybe I will set up a temporary avatar, too. This will require major effort on our part, but its well worth the sweat and blood. I've comprised a list of who we need to harass. I will probably send out pms sometime this week if these people don't acknowledge this thread by posting in it and promising to see the film. Zennier Xiayun Chris Rod Getluv Makeshift Ripper Roo Yoshue Kypade Trixster Torri Jon, anyone else come to mind?

Got the Avi. Made a request to see if we could get our screennames in a different color for the awareness campaign.

No need to even ask. I'm in Although I'm a bit scared. I've only seen one Ousmane Sembene film. Ceddo. And that, in spite of many redeeming qualities, was one tough sit.

I too have had only one other encounter with Sembene outside of Moolaade, and that was Xala, a film that perplexed and kinda bored me. Your description of Ceddo actually kinda fits my feelings on Xala - one tough sit. But Moolaade is such a wonderful film that I have a hard time seeing anyone have a hard time sitting through, outside of those with a natural aversion to subtitles (Which I know you don't have). Good luck! I'm not on the computer with the videos at the moment, but once I am I'll try uploading the images ASAP.

I've read it and don't really see how it could have been madeinto a dynamic movie. It works very well as a book, but a lot of it is thoughts that he and his first two wives have. The movie version would seem empty of content or have a lot of voice-overs I should think. I also read it was a very half-attentive adaptation. Semebene liked to make sure his themes reached as many people as possible and turned to film in part because he was contending with what he said were linguistic and literacy barriers. If his book survived that transition, it seems it didn't. I'm going to try and watch ceddo and his first film, Black Girl, in preperation to rewatch Moolaade. I think Black Girl was the first film to reach Cannes from Sub-Saharan Africa. So I've been wanting to see it for awhile. Good luck! He's fleshed out his characters a lot in laer films I noticed. His earlier ones were very dramatic, neo-realist. His later ones are filled with humour, and the characters are moreindividualized rather than just tropes. I loved the First wife's attitude in Moolaade. She was just so opposite Colle's but they both came together in the end over a common hope. I also liked Mercenaire, though was shocked at the end with what happened to him. Though Sembene makes a point, I think, of distancing the locals and the internationals. Seems everyone who had travelled abroad became a site of change. They served as a compliment to Colle. Re: Moolaade Tops indieWIRE's '04 Foreign-Language Film Poll
Hm, getting good images isn't nearly as easy as I hoping. Not because there aren't any good images, but because they don't translate nearly as well to siggie-sized beauty as I had hoped. A lot of that has to do with the transfer to Quicktime not being as smooth as I had hoped, making for slightly blurred images when in motion. Also, the more lovely, New World-like images (Random objects made oddly beautiful) just don't translate well to a siggie-sized image.
Is there a particular image you were interested in, Dolce, so I have an idea?

The porqupine mosque!
Or maybe the end with the singing (I'm intentionally trying to be vague, but I'm sure you know what I mean). Or the radio bonfire? Or Mercenaire's cart in the beginning? All are good. Whatever works best for you, as I've never created a sig.

Fine don't include me. You'll just have to live with the fact that one member here will keep on assuming Moolade is a movie about cows made into marmalade.

If someone points to a "legal" place where you can download it, then I'll see it most definitely... EDIT: It's downloading...

I should be able to get an image of the 'porcupine mosque' from one of the clips AI downloaded, once I get back home. I've also got a few more images for future converts.

But please please please join! I would love it if you watched this. Its my fault for not including you in the list. I was gone for a year, and my recruitment skillz are a bit rusty. I would have never otherwise made that error. Oh goddie, goodie, goodie! Please let us know what you thought and join us. I have already asked Nebs to put out a review thread in the critic forum too. Because this forum gets a little less views and I'm sneaky, double link between this thread and the review thread. Welcome to the Cult of Moolaade, enjoy the coolaid and feel free to recruit anyone you feel might be interested in this film once you weigh in on it! Positive Jon...its starting! I feel a momentous thread coming on of B.E. and New World dimensions....

I would definitely do this.... if I were home. But I am backpacking in Europe and not back until the 17th. Perhaps when I get back....?

Re: Moolaade Tops indieWIRE's '04 Foreign-Language Film Poll
Roo, It is for Moolaade. I have no ability to change the title of this thread, but over the years it has become my Moolaade/Sembene thread, so Jon and I have kept using it. Yes, we want to all watch Moolaade, now that it is finally available! And I pm'ed a few people I thought would be interested, you included. Getluv and Ripper. Next week good for you guys? I don't know how long netflix takes. I asked my parents today if we can place an order for it tomorrow (they have an account) and they said yes. But I never used it, so still am not sure. Is a week a good delivery time? Because then we could aim for a sort of Tuesday-Thursday of next week. I don't think Jon and I were planning on this being a movie night per se, as we understand this is not the easiest movie to get one's hands on, and everyone is busy. We just kind of thought over the next week or two hopefully some interested people would watch it and voice their opinions. So yes, trixster, the 17th is great! I wanted it to be fun and kind of consolidated (over a week or two) but not a movie night. Its too tricky to do that. Its more a celebration that its finally out on DVD and available for everyone to see. And also, a bit of a memorial because Sembene died last year. We do hope that y'all get to watch it in the next two or so weeks though, and if anyone wants to try to make it more consolidated and do a specific movie night I'm game. But then I would ask someone who knows netflix to let us know what good timing would be. Next week mid-week, or two weeks from now? Really, Jon and I just think more people should see and love this movie, and we think y'all definitely will. Trust us.
