 Re: Speed Racer
Emile did quite well actually.
I really think the casting was superb.
I've never seen so many colors, and it was all so beautiful.
And I loved the fact that the movie never slowed down. From the background music playing the whole time, to objects in the background constantly moving. It was fantastic.

Matthew Fox was fucking awesome as racer x Christina Ricci was sooooo cute and great The Little Boy and monkey were funnier than hell The fx were beyond words The racing sequences and fight scenes were badass Emile Hirsch was also great great casting
Cheesy Corny Fun for everyone.

 Re: Speed Racer
I finally checked this one out, and I've got to say that it was a blast. Despite a flimsy script and taking a while to get its footing, Speed Racer is some of the very best entertainment to hit screens thus far this year. Visually, it's a high unlike anything else out there. Major kudos are due to both the art direction and (especially) the visual effects. The race scenes (the cross-country one in particular) are nothing short of eye-popping. It also manages to be one of those outlandishly entertaining movies with crazy touches including (but not limited to) gangsters, races in wildly different terrains (the aforementioned cross-country race features legs in a desert and icy mountains), and even a chimp as a supporting character. The acting isn't anything of the Oscar-worthy variety, but the cast does what is needed. Though she doesn't have much to do, Christina Ricci really goes all out to make herself look like part of the world, while Roger Allam chomps away at the scenery on several ocassions. It's really a shame that it hasn't done well at the box office because I found it to be the kind of wild, off-the-wall popcorn fun the summer season is made of.

8.5 or 9/10 Also John Goodman did a nice job. And some of the scenes/races were pretty exciting, very surprsiing so but they were.

 Re: Speed Racer
I'm a little behind the curve, what with me seeing this in it's third weekend of release, but what can I say - - I've got my own race to run... ...and I've seen the devastation that lays about the shattered vehicle that is Speed Racer - - a crippled BO - - zero WOM, even amongst those I thought'd go geeky for it, and the final cut - - I saw it in a premier local theatre in a giant digital auditorium - - al by my lonesome... Fortunately, my time tonight was not wasted. Speed Racer ended up being a winner despite all the other team's best effort to sabotage him. But, it's reception by the corporate media does go to show ya - - it doesn't pay to go messin' with the corporate media! (Note to self... if I want to make some big $$$, I gotta stop playin' the part of the truth-teller - - it don't even get me no respect here on KJ for free.) Speed Racer is the post-graduate course in visual storytelling - - it's also post-post-modern and significantly - - post-cultural. I loved how this old school Japanese anime morphed into an American movie homogenized for a world audience - - forget the one off war crime of nuking the civilian kids way back when, this is the start of the reparation! Rejoice world citizen - - witness the proto-melding of nationalism into planetism... Though all the acting was in the service of the whole, I've got to give special kudos to the two ladies at the center of the Racer clan - - Christina Ricci and Susan Sarandon are two old pro's who bring life incarnate to this technicolor lollipop! Go, Speed Racer... Go, Speed Racer... GO!!! 17 out of 5.

 Re: Speed Racer
To quote the illustrious Mr. T... "I pity the fool" who waits to watch Speed Racer on DVD instead of in a lusciously gigantic, state-of-the-art, digital auditorium - - this movie is just what the big screen was created for!!! (Fast forward in time, to a week after the DVD release and listen to the whiners wander into this thread. Cue the hand wringing and poor boy tears...)

I'm so interested to see this now, but I don't know a single person who actually wants to see it, so I'll probably have to wait 'till DVD.

You lied to me Yoshue. You fucking lied.
In seriousness, I liked the movie... when there was no talking.
However I hated the script and wanted the boy and his chimp to be murdered horrifically.

 Re: Speed Racer
In all honesty if you see this movie and like it and then proceed to watch Driven and dislike that I'm going to assume you are some sort of bi-polar lunatic because Speed Racer is Driven with a day-glow colour palette.
Oh and using the whole face wipe editing is cool once...............BUT NOT COOL THE 19372829282 TIME YOU USE IT!!!
And it goes without saying I want the Kid and the Chimp to be castrated without an anaesthetic for how annoying they are, and how they promote childhood obesity so happily.

It was, I didn't expect to enjoy the racing as much as I did, even if it was so ridiculous. (only really bothered me when the tire shield and that tire weapon started sparring, outside of that, the ridiculousness was enjoyable)

I actually did think about this issue Bradford and im kinda glad you brought it up because I do have views on it. 1. I respect makeshift and his quoting of susan sotang and the inability to seperate style from the actual film, but im a person who beleives that valid cinematic opinion is always valid if you back up your view with reasoning. Hence if a person wants to seperate the visuals and call a film crap I have no problem with that. Speed Racer was rancid crap to me, a stupid remake of Driven. Yes i saw the style of the film but i refuse to give it a pass due to the type of visual medium it choose. Cinema tells stories, it grabs imaginations and brings us to different worlds, you understand that more then most Brad, but dammit man i hated the lazy repeat repeat nature of the film along with alot else. I mean i can understand how you can love it, i can understand how anybody could love it. But me personally found it rancid. People find different thinks they love in movies so I guess thats what i lovwe about these threads..............................anyhoo just my two cents

 Re: Speed Racer
Was Driven funny? No (well...not on purpose).
Was Driven filled with exciting, inventive, giddy action sequences? No.
Did Driven have John Goodman fend off lackluster ninjas? No.
Was Driven blessed with filmmakers actually making an effort to pull off something special? No.
Was Driven the most visually interesting picture of its year? No.
Did Driven have Matthew Fox slap some bitch from his car in mid-air? FUCKING NO.
Was every single frame of Driven a delicious treat for the eyes? No.
Did Driven have a heart? No.
Did I pay to see Driven three times? Absolutely not.
I don't mind waiting 10 years for people to appreciate the movie, that happens all the time, but I wish we could just cut to the chase!

You thought Speed Racer was funny? It was Speed Racer's humor that made me want to murder someone.
