As a producer on Million Dollar Baby, Eastwood himself gets an Oscar on Million Dollar Baby if it wins Best Picture. Nothing is a lock when Eastwood is involved, Hollywood loves this man, the fact he surprised and got a best actor nod just proves it even more.

It is very unlikely that The Aviator misses out and while Jamie Foxx is pretty much a lock, there is always one HUGE surprise and it is rarely in the Best Picture department...

Michael Moore gambled when he pulled Fahrenheit 9/11 out of the docu race and started campaigning for a BP nod,and the academy's response was a big F-YOU!
Im glad.

Wasn't it because Moore wanted it to be shown on TV before the election? And to make that possible it couldn't be nominated for documentary?

Rod is right.
Also Moore didn't want Best Documentary (an easy win he thought) he wanted Best Picture. The strategy was by removing themselves from docu race, and if the election turned out favorably it would be seen as more of a Best Picture contendor.
That didn't pan out. 9/11 has been dead since early Nov.

No because that would remove it from Best Picture race, and he didn't want that. DVD doesn't matter.

My mistake then. I heard the DVD rule on another forum.

I thought this TV thingee was only in the guideline for documentary, not best Picture...

Levy is right. Documentary has a restriction that the film can't be shown on TV before the nomination, while there is no such restriction for best picture and other categories.

I agree, The Aviator has like an 90% chance of winning.
Jamie will not lose. The public and the media love him way too much. It will be Ray's only win, it DOES have 6 nominations.
I know a lot of internet geeks do not love Ray, but Ray has HUGE support in demographics which are typically not all 20 something white males.
The Academy will not risk NOT giving Foxx the award at this point.

I second that (or actually third that)

So, basically it has to be released between 9/30-8/31 and cannot be shown on public access TV prior to the Oscar nominations?

I'm not completely sure, but I think it can be shown before the nominations. It has something to do with the time between theatrical release and tv air date (could it be 9 months or so?)

And by TV do they mean public access or cable? So confusing.

You are correct about this.

But the reason 9/11 wasn't really nominated was that it wasn't submitted.

But it's quite simple actually.
 Ok I'll stop hehe.
movies cannot air on TV within 3 months of their theatrical run for best picture (I knew there had to be a reason for Surviving Christmas' snub! ), 9 months for documentary.
Eligible dates for foreign film are October 1- September 31.

Well, I predict Foxx to win as well, but he is not an absolute lock.
He deserves to win, though.

It wasn't submitted because Moore wanted to show it on TV before the election, besides the fact that he wants a BP nom since h already won Documentary.

He's the biggest lock this year.
Can you imagine the media shitstorm if he does not win?
I don't even want to think about how nasty it could get.
