Absolutely loved it! Speed Racer did exactly what it set out to do, perfectly! There is not one thing I can find to criticize about this movie. Speed Racer is the best children's action film I have ever watched, snobs be damned.

It appears half the posters here walked into a steakhouse expecting sushi.

A+

Now I have. I saw your post earlier in the thread, but didn't bother commenting until after watching the movie. Since I know nothing about the anime, I can't quite compare the movie to past work, but the visuals (and editing, especially) are outstanding. Damn, this movie better get an editing award.

Oof, that hurts. I think your review explained my review pretty well. In the quest for something intelligent, most people let a movie for 8-year-olds go over the tops of their heads. ;)

yoshue's raves got me into the theater tonight, and I'm glad they did. It's kinda great, or at least a lot better than I ever could have expected.

For everyone saying the editing is reason alone to see this movie, I couldn't agree more. Even though I'm not sure we can really call it "editing" per se. No matter what you want to call it, the movie has some brilliant scene transitions, and the way the actors' faces float in and out of the frame is pretty exhilarating. Coupled with the Brother's blatant disregard for any color scheme you might find produced by nature, Speed Racer is definitely unlike anything that's ever been made before, and that is a lot more then you can say about most other movies. It's intermittently hilarious, though I'm not sure I was laughing at the stuff I was supposed to be laughing at (and was definitely not laughing at the stuff I was supposed to be laughing at; the little brother and the chimp), and surprisingly tense and effective.

Yeah, it runs a bit too long and there is some seriously clunky dialogue, but it's pretty glorious pop-art.

I saw it, I just don't know what to write yet. I certainly didn't hate it, but I'm not sure I can say I liked this film. I'm not even sure it was a film.

But one thing for certain, the little brother and the chimp were annoying as hell and I wish a bulldozer would roll over them and their guts would splatter all over the screen. Yeah.

Apparently Spritle and Chim-Chim are exactly as they were in the cartoon series.

I'm glad I never watched the show then. They were insanely annoying.

Different genres altogether. Pixar's children's movies are cutesy. Speed Racer is more like a comic book film with an extremely Japanese feel. Personally, I enjoyed Speed Racer more than all of Pixar's movies other than The Incredibles and Ratatouille, which ironically, are adult-oriented.

Thank you! I'm happy that I played some part in getting you into the theatre, and even happier that you enjoyed this unfairly maligned delight. Good write-up.

You speak of laughing; I laughed almost continuously, and usually, I think, in tandem with the Wachowskis intentions. Racer X punching that guy mid-air made me giddy in the best way. They nailed the tone of this thing. I've been tough on The Brothers post-Matrix, but goddamnit if they didn't make the best movie possible from the fucking retarded Speed Racer property.

Now, trixster and kypade...you're next...

BUT I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. IF YOU INTEND TO SEE THIS MOVIE AT ANY TIME IN YOUR LIFETIME DO NOT WAIT. GO TO THE CINEMA BEFORE IT DISAPPEARS IN TWO WEEKS.

Yeah, I'm totally with you on this. If you can't see this movie in a theater, don't even bother.

I think the problem the movie is having with a lot of people is it comes off as a very conflicted piece. I mean, it is a strange fucking movie. It's tonally awkward with some really forced kid-friendly stuff, and it's also a Wachowski Brother's movie so a lot of their weird kinks and fetishes manifest (Racer X is essentially a dominatrix), but it's also still a PG rated family movie. My head is spinning just thinking about it, but it all ends up coming together and forming something that definitely has some problems, but I think works as a whole.

The fact that Yoshue liked it should be proof enough that no sane human being ought to watch this film.
