It's no secret that I think Jennifer Garner's unattractive, Mr. X. However, I agree with you that "freakishly ugly" was perhaps the wrong term to use... I was writing very much in a stream of consciousness and I guess "freakishly ugly" just popped out. I'll edit my post to reflect my true feelings towards Jennifer's looks. I'm very sorry for offending you and/or Jennifer.

I dont get why some people are being so tough on Elektra- certainly the box office indicates alot less people saw it than is claimed here...It was wholy enjoyable and the drama was surprisingly good - just generally surpassed my expectations - and saved me the bother of having to defend it and apologise to my friends if it sucked.

I saw it yesterday, Naturalflux. The drama was laughable, as was the dialogue, cgi (if you can't CGI blankets billowing in a room well, then why not just get some real blankets and a few fans? I mean, honestly!), plot and characters. The only thing that half rescued the film from being a complete turd were my already lowered expectations and a pretty sound performance from Garner (she's got the face of a rottweiler, the bone structure of Dolph Lundgren, a smile that looks like both the rottweiler and Dolph Lundgren mauled her mouth at an early age and she can't pick a script to save her life, but at least she can act.). Everything else was laughably bad. Below are a few examples of bits where I (and much of the rest of the audience I saw it with) broke into laughter.

There may be some spoilers ahead, so for those particularly eager to go into Elektra fresh and spoiler free (whoever you are), I'd ignore the next couple of paragraphs.

After a terribly animated/exposition-riddled prologue explains to us how the forces of good and evil have been fighting since the beginning of time, we're introduced to Elektra in the process of assassinating Jason Isaacs. Elektra dresses skimpily and has an embarrassing fringe. When her fringe isn't being embarrassing, it and the rest of her hair dances and flows majestically on the (indoor, mind) wind in sexy slow-mo. (cue unintentional laughter).

Elektra has a smarmy, hollywood agent-esque... um, agent. This agent gets Elektra jobs killing folk while throwing out sarcastic one-liners like a professional comedy sidekick. We first meet him as he walks into an apartment Elektra is in the process of vacating. She's washing the floor with a bucket and some rags. When asked why she's washing the floor with a bucket and some rags, Elektra explains she is removing her "D.N.A."... Yes, and good luck with that Elektra! (cue unintentional laughter).

There is an incident in Elektra's past that haunts her dreams to this day. Her father once forced her to tread water without using her hands!!! (cue unintentional laughter). Also her mother died at the hands of an assassin. While that doesn't necessarily stand out as being funny, I couldn't help but think of how Gary in Team America has never been able to forgive himself for his brothers death at the hands of zoo monkeys.

Terence Stamp is a blind kung fu master who uses a mystical kung fu technique to see the future. (cue unintentional laughter).

The crack team of assassins sent to kill Elektra and her entourage can be described as follows: One is very strong and his skin can withstand gunfire, another can cause disease and death by breathing on or kissing her prey, another has tattoos that come to life and kill folk... Their names are Stone, Typhoid and Tattoo. See if you can guess which name fits which character description... If only all of the characters had been named after their most easily identifiable characteristics! The love interest would've been called "Boring", his daughter would be "Annoying" and Elektra herself would be "Granite-Jawed Uggo". Now that's a film I'd pay to see. Jennifer Garner in... Granite-Jawed Uggo

Now, I've already made fun of Elektra's hair once this post. But what I haven't made fun of is the fact that the 10 year old Elektra we see in various flashbacks has the exact same hairdo. That's right, the assassin hasn't changed her hairdo in nearly twenty years.

There's plenty more in the film to laugh at, but I don't want to spoil it all. Needless to say, it's terrible, but it's also quite fun! But in the same way Red Sonja or Masters of the Universe is fun.

http://naturalflux7.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1512 <<note to self stop linking to very long review>> Is my opinion.

In the movies defense, surely you can come up with better reasons than.....her hair, and the fact you think Jennifer Garner is fugly ? In my review of Catwoman you'll only see a passing reference to the point that EVERYONE tears it to shreds over - her costume. Big deal, she had funny ears. Shes barely in that dumb mask anyway.

The dialogue was only hammed up by Stamp and Kirigi, and i think i remember thinking one time in the whole film that Elektra shouldnt have said that - she sounded corny "You speak in riddles, old man" was the corniest line in the film - which i think youll agree is a league above Daredevils worst quote "Try asking for my number". I geuninely found the dialogue quite acceptable - maybe because Daredevils was so bad i had lowered expectations in that field?

Elektra is removing her D.N.A Because she has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - its part of one of her many quirks that shes developed [although you dont learn she has OCD till later] , including counting her steps and the number of windows - and adds to her bond with Abby who shares it in a lesser form, who surprised me by being far less annoying than she seems in the clips and trailers and when she cries its quite believable.
The point of the wind flowing around her when shes indoors? Perhaps its to show shes got an eerie super-presence of mystique? Rob Bowman isnt so stupid to think "Wait lets make it all windy inside just because its usually windy indoors"....

In agreeing with you - I thought Terrance Stamp was really quite bad in this film, and the CGI sheets were by far the worst use of CGI in the film [they looked like dumb ghosts] but aside from that, i found the CGI to be pretty damn good. Yes, your right in saying that Jennifer Garner is 'sound' in the movie. She is :)

Funninly enough - the only time the audience laughed when i watched "Elektra" was when the characters were being funny - ie the scene where Abby is making faces infront of a meditating Elektra, who proceeds to scare the shit out of her. But really to be fair, even if [which i did not] i thought everything else in Elektra was unredeemably bad - the cinematography was astounding- with every frame being thought out very well - and for that alone i wouldnt say Elektra was horrible.

I also gave more reasons for it being bad than her hair and her being fugly. Yes the cinematography was good, as were some of the locations and, yes, the uggo Jennifer Garner. Hell, even some of the action sequences were fun. But I can't excuse the villains cheesily exploding into green smoke and I can't excuse the useless maze chase at the end of the film.

See, here's the darndest thing, Snrub: your points are valid, but do you need to constantly knock Jennifer Garner? If you're going to do that, knock every ugly actor and actress! And, if you didn't like part of the film because you think she's ugly, then... well... you must hate a lot of films. Not all celebrities are beautiful. Some are downright scary-looking. Hey, if it's all in good fun, that's cool, I just didn't want you to think that valid points were backed up when you said she's an "uggo".

I thought the Maze chase was super cool - and that thing she did with the sai - coolest. :D

And MR.X dont call out anyone for being mean and disrespectful about someone elses looks/personality/anything. For you do know that everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if you think someones being mean by saying jennifer garner is a rotwieler, calling them out for it is also defined as shoving your own opinon down their throat.

See the Reel Life forum for more on that one :P

Hey, hey, hey! I never once blamed the film's failings on Jennifer Garner's uggo-ness! Her ugliness has nothing to do with the badness of the film. I even said in my mini-review that she's one of the only good parts of it! In fact, I just watched 13 Going on 30 and enjoyed it thoroughly! It's one of the best rom-coms I've seen in a long while. And I still think she's an uggo.

I'll always knock ugly actors and actresses, like Garner, Chloe Sevigny, Milla Jovovich, John Goodman, Joe Pantoliano, John Leguizamo... but I'll never not respect their quality (if physically ugly) work in sub-par films.

which is a good thing - you know 13 Gong on 30 rocked, and i still and never will get how one person can think that the woman i percieve to be the most beautiful women EVER is percieved by someone else as being an "Uggo" [i love that name:D] Not that theres anything wrong with you thinking that, it just shocks me how different some peoples perceptions of beauty can be.

Yet i will pull out the stastics in the form of "Jennifer Garner won sexiest woman in this one this one and this one" some day soon - its boiling over as my secret weapon.

Well, I'm not sure.. I mean, I didn't expect this movie to do as bad as it did which is never a good thing, so maybe DVD is the better option..

Well are you looking for lots of action and CGI effects? Most of the action is shown in the trailers. The fights you do get to see only lasts 45 secs each sequence and involve Elektra getting her butt kicked. One of the crappy cgi shown involves the henchmen dying and turning into green clouds or the tattoo guy summoning a bear with its head flying around like a Voltron toy. Pure MST3K material

Come on, now, it's not as bad as MST3K material.

Oh, and BKB, if you loved AvP, I can't see how you wouldn't enjoy the brainless fun of Elektra, seeing as how Elektra has the fun added to the brainless part. \:D/

Wait for the DVD, which will hopefully have added scenes etc and maybe fill this movie out. Rent it just to see if they did any better. As it is, it's not worth wasting your money on it.

Sadly, I agree with Snrub for the most part, which really scares me.

The hands down worst thing for me in Elektra was the inclusion of the bratty kid. Kids do not belong in action movies. It never works. In Elektra I ended up mostly rooting for the kid to die, and I don't think that was the movies intent. Bratty kids belong in Home Alone 7 or Superbabies 4. They don't belong in Elektra or the Last Action Hero.
