Post Are we moving closer to global homogeny?
Just wondering? I'm reading a book about African Cinema (w00t! In my first ciname class ever). And it speaks about the struggle African countries are having in the face of post-colonialist structures. This is not a value statement...its just what is happening. The book mentions the evolution of collective habits, etc, that were lost, and how filmmakers are responding to it now.

This has mostly to do with the internet and the global age, and perhaps a bit even to this forum. Do you think that "exposure" through internet, faster news sources, wider film and literature distribution is going to lead to a more homogenous global community? Sometimes its easy for me to say yes. I can point to American consumption and production and say everyone is starting to have similar value in certain objects (computers, tv, etc). But on the other hand, I know that informational sites can also lead to stronger identification of niche communities that are not geographically adjoined. For instance one site I mentioned to some forum members dealt with female reproductive rights in South Asian and South America, etc. So women were orienting under new agendas and groups (perhaps). Hey, cults have internet sites too...remember Heaven's Gate?

So in one way its easy to see how people adopt the habits and discourse of others on the internet. There are 14 year olds I would swear were 20 here just because they're used to hanging around the typing of 20 years olds. There also older people I would assume were way younger, etc. But, anyone and their mother can release a film or song on the internet now too if they want people to learn about it and/or a particular agenda which could actually lead to a more specialized group (heterogeniety...damn my spelling is off).

What do you think? Dawn of the Modern Era going to make everyone more similar in cultural habits and consumption or will people oreint into smaller groups?

Nope.

Explore different places. There is still a lot more work to do. Internet is not available out there to everyone and even amongst those that it is, i won't deny that huge progress is being made and at a much faster rate but we're no where close to creating homogeniety amongst everyone.

Similar in habits?? To an extent and only to a point where its somewhat significant. Everywhere? Nope.

It's a little bit of both.

Whenever I hear blanket statements like these, my alarm starts going off. No trend is going on by itself without affecting other things around it, and globalization is no exception. Globalization, and the benefits that come with it, can also allow a country/community better define its identity, as you pointed out.

Consider what happened in Ukraine over the past few months. The country basically imported the concept of Western-style protest, yet I'd say over the past few months the cause of a Ukrainian state(a very fragile concept to begin with, as history shows) has advanced more than in the previous 15 years.

Yeah, I don't disagree with either of you. But bABA...I meant to say what one anticipates happening. I know everywhere doesn't have internet yet...what happens when it does?

But I did always think the internet always led to specialized discemination of information as well. So that could create unique group identities. On the contrary hand however, the very habits associated with this technological lifestyle can be quite invasive. Not a bad thing mind you (I'm not going to make a call on this yet), but also advocating a certain uniform lifestyle. As I also mentioned habits, expectations, attention span can become quite uniform?

Most of the people in the world don't even have access to the phone yet; I think it's a bit too early to worry about the effects of the Internet.

I'll tell you one thing, though: if it wasn't for the Internet, I'd never be as interested in teh Box Office numbers as I am. Take it for it's worth.

well we're always moving towards it .. only faster .. but differences will never go away .. and will remain in a big way .. not just small little things .... but i mean .. well .. i don't know what i mean .. if you get it, you get it, if you don't, oh well.

Well cell phones actually saved alot of Tsunami victims. They're not going to do it through land lines and wires, its going to get pushed through satellite more and more until everyone can have it even in places with limited access as it stands now.

You're interested in Box Office numbers? I've never seen you post in the box office forum once! Haha!

I actually play both sides when I try to start a conversation, I tend to lean towards the internet actually allowing for more specialized communities and creating alternative networks of communication and information that lead to more variety.

Oops, I tend to be lengthy when starting a thread to give as much as possible for people to pick up on what they choose.

In layman's terms: Internet will make us all the same or allow for a greater variety of group identities?

:-P to all of you.

Yes, I am interested! Why would I be visiting BOM and this site? My interest is more in the technical part of it, though, the trends, the profitability of movies and studios and the like, and such topics don't get much traction in the forums.

There's a bit of it, though not enough.

I'm interested in all aspects of it, obviously, including that. \:D/

Dolce, could you dumb it down a little more.

So that it involves 3 words, with the second word being and, and the third being chips.

Also, you must place the word "Fish" in the sentence too.

Hope this helps.
