Wasn't as funny as I thought it would be, but still enjoyable. Jason Segal or whatever his name is didn't do it for me though. He is no Carrell or Rogen, and it shows when the viewer actually ends up rooting against him. His character actually started to piss me off with his nonstop crying and lame attempts at humorous dialogue. I loved Kristen Bell, and the entire dinner conversation with her, the British guy, and the others had me almost rolling in the aisle. Some seriously funny moments in this movie that save it from being just another lifeless comedy.

Woohoo!

Anyway, he made the penis promise :P : http://news.superiorpics.com/2007/12/17 ... OMISE.html

I applaud him! :clap2: Paul Rudd needs to go frontal in one of these movies ;).

I couldn't quite fit it into my review, but the best scene of the film hands down for me was the "sweatpant sequence", especially the final moment. There weren't many people in my theater, but myself and one other guy in the back row laughed hysterically at that.

This is the kind of movie that I really enjoyed now, but I think on repeat viewings it will only get better. The same can be said for the other Apatow films.

And I wish I knew about this sooner.

Dammit. I ran out of the theater for about 45 seconds to avoid peeing my pants right at that point.

On par with 40 Year Old Virgin, and a step above Knocked Up, not quite on Super Bad's level. Great film.

Billy Baldwin sounds exactly like Alec from the 90s now. He was my favorite part of the movie though. I laughed at almost everything he said.

I liked it but its a bit of a mixed bag. I'd rank it below 40YOV and Superbad but ahead of Knocked Up.

PRO
Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell - both great as their characters
Paul Rudd.
Russell Brand is hilarious as Aldous Snow. He's the guy I thought we'd hate but as Bretter he's too cool to hate.
The TV show scenes
The puppets and that awesome Dracula song! Brilliant!

CON
Excessive male full frontal nudity!! WTF!?
Segal's character did indeed get too whiny at times. Im a big Segal fan but I expected a little more from him in this film.

At one stage I was almost convinced Kunis and Bell would run off together while their dumped BF's also hooked up (think the surf scenes). Now that would have been an ending!!

Grade : B/B+

BTW - WOM should be reasonable but not spectacular. There were a fair few laughs but also a number of lulls and it dragged a bit.

One thing I really didn't like was the Apatow third act make-over resolution. He loves using that thing. It's where the male lead loses the girl and realizes he wasn't good enough the way he was.

So he cleans up his apartment, cuts his hair, dresses better, starts eating salads, and works out. The one caveat being Peter continued to eat cereal out of his gignormous mixing bowl.

I for one would love for the next male lead to stay exactly the same and still win back the girl.

I agree with this.

I also think the "Apatow double standard" (it's okay for the guys to be a schlub, but the girls still have to be exquisite beauties) is an interesting phenomena that should be discussed, though I'm not sure if I'm upset by it at all. I would definitely like to see a movie flip these roles and see how successful it is, though.

Other than that, I really liked it. The greatest thing about the movies carrying the Apatow brand is their ability to meld raunchy humor with a great sense of humanity and truthfulness. This movies has that in spades. It may not be as skillful as Knocked Up (it has some rough editing issues), but I would argue that it's the most emotionally and situationally true Apatow yet. And I think that is pretty powerful.

Also, it's really funny.

i disagree with that. It's unreasonable to expect the hot girl to go back to a fricken lazy slob.

Any more unreasonable to accept they would be together in the first place?

It's clear Apatow is playing out a fairly common male fantasy in his movies, so I agree with loyal that the third act character arc is untrue to the rest of the movie.

i think that alcohol played a part in Knocked Up Ben/Alison. and immaturity played a part in Sarah/Peter. There was something Sarah liked about Peter and that she could maybe 'change' him. Rachel/Peter had more in common.

I dont think he made those changes to get the girl but because of the girl. I see no problem with that.

I don't see how cutting his hair, working out, and cleaning his apartment matters in the grand scheme of the screenplay. The Dracula puppet musical certainly matters. But the rest kinda reminds me of how Vince Vaughn was all clean and proper at the end of The Break-Up.

i think it was for himself. the way he was living was not healthy. jesus loyal.

Well I don't think he thought there was anything wrong with the way he was living until Sarah told him why she broke up with him.

It's solid if unspectacular, and sometimes a little better than that. I'm thinking specifically of Russell Brand, the dinner scene, and what was, for whatever reason, the single biggest laugh I've had in a movie theater in forever: the business with the pig.

I enjoyed myself.

A nice touch was having Carla Gallo who played his (ex) GF in Undeclared as one of the girls he has sex with in the film - the one that keeps saying "Hi" and wants to be gagged.

After the penis show, it went a little stale. Not going to lie. I got worried. But my God did it ever pick up and fast. This was flat out the funniest movie I have seen since Superbad & Knocked Up. This is raunchier than both, IMO but just as sweet as they turned out. Jason Segel wrote a really touching, hilariously wonderful script. He is fine in this, very in the vein of his character on HIMYM. Kristen Bell is fantastic, love the nods to Pulse and Veronica Mars. Mila Kunis, is two things. 1. hot as hell through out. 2. very charming and sweet as the other love interest to Peter. Jonah Hill is a little weak, I felt his part fell flat. While Paul Rudd makes up for his short time on screen with some key one liners. There are a few scenes in here that had me in stitches, the singing of the Dracula song at the pub/bar. And the versing sex scenes. Wonderful film that is hilarious, and sweet. Really surprised. A-

Slightly disappointing. The script could have used a bit more work. It's funny/good enough but at times it felt like it just went from one random gag to the next, especially during the first half of the movie. Same thing with the characters.

Sometimes it felt like they were doing things that were completely out of character just for the sake of an easy joke. Its still a solid romantic comedy though, just lacks that one thing that would have made it great.

Yep, it's hilarious. I still have Superbad ranked higher, but this is about on-par (and maybe funnier, gotta see it again) than Knocked Up. The whole cast is just great.

I lovvvvvvved William Baldwin's incredibly corny lines in the TV show ("Where he's going, he's going to need to masturbate").

Jonah Hill is also a riot. "I just went from six to midnight."

***½

Yeah, that was hilarious. There should be a movie where the characters do nothing other than imitate David Caruso's laughable acting style on CSI: Miami. That's what the Baldwin character was doing in this movie, if you didn't get it, as in...

*says incredibly stupid dialogue slow and melodramatically, then puts on sunglasses*

That line was funnier in Starsky and Hutch. My only real problem with this is that Jason Segal seemed to be imitating Seth Rogen too much in this film, and some of the jokes seemed old to me. But still leaning towards B+

all of my friends who saw this said it was as good as Superbad and better than Knocked Up (although, to be fair, Knocked Up wasn't really aimed at them). I'm very excited for this.
