Post Teehee....Wanna Buy a Picasso from Costco?

Original Picasso sells on Costco Web site

SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- Costco shoppers were offered an online deal this month -- an original Picasso.

The crayon-on-paper drawing of a face signed and dated by Pablo Picasso was listed for $39,999.99 on the retailer's Web site January 12. It sold Wednesday, said Jim Sinegal, Costco's chief executive, who would not identify the buyer.

The Issaquah-based discount retailing giant may be better known for bulk chicken and cases of soda, but the Costco.com site features an eclectic mix of items, from caskets to computers to sports equipment.

Art dealer Jim Tutwiler, who sold the Picasso, has been selling art through Costco for the past decade. He said Costco's markup is one-tenth that of traditional galleries.

Tutwiler described the drawing as a "doodle" on the blank side of a book jacket. Picasso probably traded it for a new suit or a boat or some service, he said.

"He was a barterer. He hated to spend money," Tutwiler said.

The work was signed and dated November 29, 1970. Picasso's daughter, Maya, authenticated it through a handwritten and signed declaration, which was further verified by the International Society of Appraisers.

This was the second Picasso Tutwiler has sold through Costco. The first was sold in November to a customer in San Francisco.

That buyer passed on this piece, Tutwiler said. "His wife said it was too similar to the other one."

Honestly I do not know how the dealer even came up with this idea. And who the hell would trust the authenticity of a Costco sold Picasso? Man, the Getty couldn't even get in right with their imfamous Kouros but an on-line Picasso is a sure deal. And its the second one! I wonder what the first one was and for how much? Uh...I guess.....

Some things money can't buy...for everything else, there's Costco and Mastercard! \:D/

Actually, that would be American Express.

MasterCard has a limit.

Oh!

Yeah but Amex is settling an out of court case right now for cheating all their card members. Screw the credit cards...I betcha there's a Costco card somewhere that covers it, and you just need to sign some agreement in blood or something.

Its actually such an odd story. Mostly because I wonder who thinks to go online looking for such things at Costco, since I doubt anyone who is going online to shop for groceries just thinks, Oh, well look what they just posted today honey. I know you wanted me to check out the specials on undies...but did you ever think about buying a Picasso?

I doubt anybody looks at costco's site for Picassos, but once it was posted, I'm sure there was a press release and the word spread quickly among those who be interested in buying an overrated piece of paper.

If the story about barter is true, then I must say, Picasso was a financial genius.
