Post HARRY POTTER 8 or is it HP 7 1/2? Predictions
It's official:

DEATHLY HOLLOWS will be made into two movies:

The first one opens in November 2010 (back to the fall), Part II in May 2011...

Both movies will be directed once again by David Yates

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/ne ... 8810.story

Any predictions for both movies?

May will probably get a Memorial date similar to what Indy and Star Wars got. Really I am not sure I think one movie would have made 320-350, I think both films will make over 300 though but neither will make more than like 320-330.
Maybe 320 for the first part and 325 for the second part.

heh I doubt the last HP will make more than 350 million considering the last SW's film barely broke that mark too yet their adjusted films were all higher than any of the Potters

I think its a good idea. They won't have to cut out anything this way, and it gives WB even more money.

Deathly Hallows 1: 120/330
Deathly Hallows 2: 160/350 (UBER frontloaded)

Nov 2010

OW: 125m
Total: 330m

Basically is going to sell as many tickets as HP6 will do this November, though maybe a bit more.

May 2011

OW: 165m
Total: 375m

This is a sure-fire to break SM3 opening records (granted it opens on a Friday). Of course, it will be super frontloaded. The hype surronding this one is going to be INSANE.

I guess it depends on when they open it in May. If they do a Memorial Weekend date maybe Wed or Thursday or they could it put in the middle of May.

you must mean Memorial day? Yeah I agree Memorial day weekend is always rough because you know it will drop hard. At least with the weekend before you know you have two great weekends.

I don't know if I like the idea. Most blockbuster films that are split into two films like this, and released less than a year apart end up disappointing. At least the last film of the series does. Though the last film in most of these cases are always viewed as the weakest film in the series, usually. Who knows what will happen. And I don't like the May release for the second part. They should move it to early July. Potter 3 was released before summer weekdays could boost it's total, and that early June release hurt it. July is perfect. No school. Huge midnights. Summer weekdays. July maximizes Potter Opening weekend potential, and it can manage a good multipler here. Hopefully they do NOT go with Memorial Day Weekend (I doubt part 2 could manage a 2x here). The weekend before, PLEASE.

the big problem is its only a 6 month wait. I dont think the opening weekend will go from 125 to 165 in 6 months.

i have #6 doing 115/310 this december. in 2 years, ill have #7 at 130/320...i think 155/360 is achieveable.

All I'm 100% sure is that Part II will not make more than Part I. Sequels this close together never work, with the exception of LOTR. Think Matrix Revolutions or Pirates: At World's End.

That's why I'm unsure about this idea. Especially with the May release. Potter isn't an early summer franchise, I think Potter 3 showed this, but Potter can work in the summer (Potter 5), but only if it's released in July I think. The huge fanbase should maintain it's Opening Weekend, but it's going to drop harder than Potter 3 if it does indeed have a May release and and isn't greater than great.

Ya but thing is, it's just one movie split up. So the anticipation level to complete the film, to complete the saga that all the fans grew up with over the last, so many years, will be a big factor and push it not fall in the POTC3 or Matrix Revoltions categories. I see it going up upon the first part, not by much though, the OW will be huge though.

I don't see it falling off by a substantial sum either.

This isn't a Reloaded/Revolutions or Dead Man's Chest/At World's End deal for two really big reasons:

1. Since this is based on a novel, we know that if the level of quality of the first part is on par with the last three Potter films (and what we can assume the quality of the sixth film will be), the fans will not be disappointed. In fact, if anything, they'll just be pumped to see how what they've already read on the page translates to the screen. Disappointment with the first "part" was a nice factor in At World's End performance and THE factor in that of Matrix Revolutions.

2. This is Harry Potter. Or, more specifically, this is the last of seven Harry Potter stories. And Harry Potter has been a box office monster since the first film hit screens in 2001. On the other hand, The Matrix Reloaded and Dead Man's Chest were both first sequels to films that came out of nowhere to make huge amounts of money and gained wider followings on home video. The demand to see the characters back for the first time was incredibly intense- so intense that there was never any way either movie could live up to expectations, thus resulting in a drop-off when the third installment was released.

On the other hand, the only reason why the Potter fans would be disappointed with part one of Deathly Hollows is because of extreme stylistic wanderings away from the novel, which probably won't happen with the story being split into two movies. Unlike the Matrix and Pirates sequels, everyone knows how the story ends and will be excited to see it unfold on screen over two volumes. If the novel hadn't been as greatly received as it was, there would be doubt over whether this approach would work, but we already know that if they stick close to the story (which looks to be the case), they will have the fans' seal of approval.

If anything is at all guaranteed at this point, I'd dare to say that it would be Part One coming in lower than Part Two. This isn't The Matrix or Pirates of the Caribbean. It's Harry Potter. It's proven its longevity already.

I completely agree, also really three aren't many movies you can compare this too. I would argue comparing it to Pirates because they were separated by a year. The only other movie that filmed back to back like this was Back to the Future, the reasons for disappointment were similar to that of the Matrix. Although I think the 4 year delay between I and 2 hurt as well. Also Potter would probably have the coveted weekend that the Star wars Prequels had and that slot sure didn't hurt it.

No way either does under 300. That would put them lower than any of the Potter movies adjusted for inflation.
