Leading actresses are essential to films. Strong, independent female performances can elevate films to higher levels and allow them to become more memorable. In many cases, successful films starring women would not be nearly as successful if the plots were reworked a bit and they starred men. 2007 was a great year for lead actresses. This year's ensembles vary somewhat in just what makes them brilliant. The first is an ensemble spread throughout many many and many places, held together all the while the film's central character is perform by three equally well-talented actresses. The next two are both comedies, and had there been a weak link in either the comedy just migth be lost, but luckily they all work together for something special, whether portraying the families of American Suburbia or slackers of L.A. The fourth works in how every role gets their moment, from the three leads to the clueless gas station clerk. And finally you have a film that balances plenty of actors portraying people effected one way or another over the years by one mysterious serial killer's reign of terror. They all have the honor of being nominated tonight...er, today, but only one can win. The ensembles are (BTW, Finding a half-complete photo of an ensemble is a BITCH):
