 Re: Wanted - $170m+ club
Regardless of whether Jolie sold that movie or not, (Although I'm always wary about chalking up any success to the actor who isn't in the movie for that long) it didn't perform up to 100 million, so Wanted's status is up in the air. Some could say Beowulf Uncanny valleyed it's way out of being a huge hit, some could say that hard sell or not, Robert Zemeckis hasn't had a flop in years, so the movie underperformed.
She does desperately need this to be a hit, though. She's attached to a lot of flops, and that can hurt if you're "the world's biggest stars" like her rag-reading followers claim. A good gross for Wanted will at least establish she has a niche, but a bad one will confirm her as this decade's Sharon Stone.

 Re: Wanted - $170m+ club
WANTED will have an R rating. Quote: Coming live from WonderCon in San Francisco, we've been shown a glimpse of the first real footage from the upcoming comic book flick Wanted and it's pretty intense. After watching the first teaser trailer, we weren't sure whether to expect a PG-13 comic book flick or something more extreme. After watching this full five minutes of footage here today at WonderCon, I can confirm that it is definitely going to be a hard R. Not only did James McAvoy drop about six F-bombs in that five minutes, but the violence is quite excessive (although no dead bodies were to be seen). Director Timur Bekmambetov is an incredibly visual director and it certainly showed in the over-the-top footage we saw. http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/02/22/ ... on-footage

With the concept and trailer a 40m opening is locked. It could be a lot higher.

On top of that he has a big fanbase there.

On top of that he has a big fanbase there. Oh really? Big fanbase? Never heard of... Popularity of Night and Day Watch had NOTHING to do with Timur Bekmambetov (with all due respect), because absolutely NOBODY cared who the director was. It could be anyone. Ivan Ivanovich Ivanov, Vasiliy Pupkin or Uwe Boll - both would have been smashing hits regardless of the director's name. The reasons were: Super mega huge marketing campaign of epic scales, title of the first real Russian blockbusters, messages such as "we kicked Hollywood's ass", "Russia strikes back", "Our answer to Lord of the Rings", homemade visual effects and very popular books with quite big cult following behind the films. These were not HIS films. You overestimate his meaning too much. The movie's producer Constantin Ernst and Channel One, where he is CEO, should be credited for movies' success. They had unlimited resources of the main Russian TV channel to promote both movies and used this heavily (they did a great job with the 1st movie, but absolutely blew heads with the 2nd movie's marketing). Many people in the net wrote something like this after Night Watch was released: "the movie is shit, but you MUST see it anyway". It was a huge cultural impact. Both were actually bad, but they had a unique message: "It's ours!" First Big, event pictures since Soviet Union collapsed. Who cares about the director! P.S. Just for information. There were NO Russian movies in the last years without big TV Channel standing behind them to provide promotional opportunities and advertising time. Take any of them. All were massively advertised as Big Russian home-made event pictures. And Wanted would be popular in Russia for the same cultural reason: it's a big blockbuster made by OUR guy - "we kicked Hollywood's ass again, we CAN do it". Bekmambetov's name will be nothing more than a marketing tool for this film here. Many people want to see it because: 1. it's a Hollywood blockbuster, 2. trailer looks very cool, 3. special effects, 4. Angelina Jolie, 5. IT IS MADE BY OUR DIRECTOR who brought us Night and Day Watch (very unique case). Awareness is very big, but that is not because Bekmambetov is such a great director, just like in case with Night and Day Watch. $10 m is guaranteed on awareness alone. Even $15-20 m is not out of question I believe.

 Re: Wanted - $170m+ club
Timur's really Best job to date is series of TV commercials "World History. Bank Imperial" (1992-1997) - one-minute masterpieces of Art! They stopped showing them 10 years ago and people still remember, because they were damn great. Bank Imperial is bankrupt now (I guess non-existing anymore), but still well-remembered because of these TV spots. I was a kid when I've seen them, but I even remember some quotes and storylines. That was something!

YAY. Biggest success story of the week after that shitty Wall-E flopped. YAY!
Wanted is heading towards a $50-60m, and should have an excellent weekend next week even though Hancock is being released. Huge weekdays will ensure legs. YAY.

 Re: Wanted - $170m+ club
I think it could make $150m+. And if it does, I'd say this is a good call, especially considering that you still predicted it after the R-rating and all.

It probably will actually miss $50 million for the weekend. Anyway, this thread wins in spirit, but like Box' calls you just reached too high probably : )

It will make over 65 million could make 70 and is headed for 275-340. The only people who would call that a flop have to be a complete idiot or an asshole.

Wall-E fans are dilusional. Making $260 would be disappointing. and most people on KJ were expecting this to be 2nd coming of Christ or something. I'm glad Iron Man will beat it overal.

There hasn't been a decent action movie since May. guns + Angelina Jolie + interesting film = good movie. Judging by the early reviews of Hancock, i think Wanted will have a good fortnight. i expect Universal to increase the theatre count next week.

There were only a couple on here that I would classify as being delusional. I thought it make somewhere between 275-300 to begin with. Also everybody in the industry will call it a huge hit, it is only people like you that hate pixar and hate the movie to begin with is calling it a flop. Hell I could call Indy a flop and that wouldn't be true either. And that film had some crazy predictions at one point.

When you already are playing in over 3,000 theatres, any increase doesn't matter. And it's not about being frontloaded. Hancock and The Dark Knight will cur deep into its demographics.
