 Wanted - $170m+ club
I have to say there is a lot more favourable buzz about this than most of the other summer fan fare.
I think this could perform well like Mr & Mrs Smith. The trailers have been excellent.

For Bekmambetov, a sense doesn't matter; but a beautiful picture is the main thing. So I don't wait for anything outstanding from this movie. But visual effects will be good.

It won't even hit $170m worldwide.

 Re: Wanted - $170m+ club
I think it is too early for Timur Bekmambetov to jump to big-budget US blockbusters. His previous experience are very low-profile local blockbusters Night Watch and Day Watch (with decent for Russia, but still cheap special effects, fine acting from some actors and no acting from others, and not to mention bad writing), comedy superhit Irony of Fate 2 and still very well remembered TV ads of Bank Imperial from the 90s. I don't believe in him too much. I clearly see his style from Night and Day Watch in the trailer of Wanted and I can't say I like that. We'll see what happens. But $170 m in the US is just impossible.

I didnt realize it was by the director of the Watcher movies. My anticipation went up because of what he did with those movies in such a shoestring budget. As long as he blows shit up, it will be awesome

 Re: Wanted - $170m+ club
McAvoy is a very good actor, but I think it's a mistake they don't have an established male lead in this. This is exactly a kind of movie that benefits from star power. Jolie alone isn't enough, especially since she seems to play 2nd billing.
And the trailers aren't very eye-catching, there is a heavy been-there-done-that feeling to the movie. I see maybe 22/65 for this.
Bekmambetov doesn't make me feel confident about this, since on the evidence of his previous film, he understands NOTHING about telling a story. It's all about cool individual shots for him, and judging by the trailers there aren't any particularly cool shots in this.

But all other things were not so great at best.

$150M is a safer bet. I think it'll make 140 for sure, 150 at a push, 170 on a great day, Worst case im thinking 80.

I'm guessing Universal will release it on a Wednesday, which i think is a big mistake. The higher the weekend gross, the more that will spread to the following weekend.
This will do well internationally. Angelina Jolie is a draw.

Certainly not a major one. when she's in an action movie. especially a good one. Well, in terms of audience reaction she has been in only one good action movie, and she shared that with Brad Pitt, who is a more consistent hit maker when he tackles mainstream movies. Mr. & Mrs. Smith alone hardly makes Jolie a proven draw. If we consider her non-good action movies as well, Tomb Raider did well thanks to pretty huge hype - based on the world's best known video game franchise at the time - and Tomb Raider 2 flopped.

That's a solid point, but Wanted's marketing is all about McAvoy, not about Jolie. The trailers make it look as if she would be playing supporting role. Then again, Wanted cost only 65 million, so they should be very satisfied if it makes closer to 190 million worldwide. I'm thinking 65/160 million, which would be solid business for it. I just think it looks generic, and the marketing concentrates heavily on the male lead, who is a total unknown to mainstream audiences, and he doesn't come off very well in the trailers... Very good actor, but his character or screen presence are not intriguing in the marketing. He just comes off as bland. If it would be a movie about a super assassin played by Jolie, I think it would do considerably better.

It does have a male lead, but Jolie appears predominantly in the trailers. She is also given more "trailer moments".

It doesn't exactly scream $3 billion.

I don't count being almost shirtless or being told to swing the bullet as a "moment". What about: 1. Jumping through a window and flying 300 feet over the street. 2. Falling down in a train wagon one mile above the ground. 3. Blasting through a window with guns in your both hands and taking down a room of enemies. In comparison Jolies big moments were: 1. Shooting cornflakes boxes inside a department store. 2. Laying down on the roof of a train when it enters a tunnel. 3. Coming out from a car window, shooting, and avoiding another car with a small gymnastic move. ...Maybe we have a different opinion of what makes a moneyshot.

The correct term is 'disappointment' not flop. A flop would be Catwoman.
