If you could pick any city in the world to settle in and lie for a good part of your life which would it be?

New York or Boston

Well, I've lived in both NY and Boston and liked them a lot....

BUT

unless you're rich, it's just not that fun to be living in a cramped apartment.

I now live about 75 miles away from NYC in a very big house with a yard that would maybe buy a small one room apartment in either of those two places.

So I would say either Boston or NYC IF I was rich and could buy a huge apartment or house in the city itself.

Otherwise, I've had it with cities. Give me space for all my stuff.

NYC, specifically Manhattan. it's the best city in the world.

I love Melbourne, Australia though.

I'm pretty lenient. Basically in or near at least a fairly big city that has a nice history to it, plenty of museums and a really good orchestra. Somewhere near Chicago or Boston comes to mind. I'm not too picky though.

If not knowing another language didn't matter, Vienna would be wonderful.

New York at least once. Preferably in one of those incredibly roomy loft apartments where you don't have to pay rent and you sporadically break into song with your homosexual, AIDS-stricken friends, like in that musical - Starlight Express.

Otherwise, a much more likely choice would be London. I've visited it a few times and liked it enough. Everyone I know who's lived and worked there though hated it with a passion, so I'm wary.

How big would the city have to be, over 500,000 is definitely to many people.

Anyway, I'd love to live comfortably in any of these cities:

Portland, OR
Seattle, WA
New York, NY

And by comfortably, I mean not having to work so much that the beauty of these cities is wasted.

I absolutely loved Vancouver when we were there over the summer. That would be on my list.

Other cities I would love to live in include San Francisco, Boston, Austin, and NYC.

I love living near D.C., though. Living in northern Virginia gives you the best of both worlds: proximity to a great city and the comfortable space of the suburbs.

Chicago is great, but wintertime sucks. It's not just the cold but the inconvenience of transport.

Portland would be great, as is Boston.

I would say one of the reasons to live in Portland is its public transpo system. It's supposedly the best in the country, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was true.

Portland has nothing on New York. But out of affordable cities, Portland's system is definitely up there. Chicago's L is antiquated, dirty, excruciatingly slow, and unreliable.

Same.

As a city planning major, I can attest that Portland offers the best urban lifestyle relative to cost - the most bang for your buck. And it's not terribly dreary.

As much as I love the bay area (near-perfect weather, BART, indie theatres!, diversity), I think I'll either end up somewhere in the Pac NW or Europe - at least for a short while. I'd prefer to stay on the move to some degree.

City-wise, nothing has beaten Boston for me. I hope to end up living in Virginia, though, cuz it's gorgeous and the reasons Libs gave.

Cardiff or Edinburgh are the top 2. Minneapolis will do for the moment, though. I could also live comfortably in Stockholm, and even though I haven't been there yet I could probably spend a fair bit of time in Auckland.

Have wanted to live in NYC since I was a kid so NYC it is (with plenty of money offcourse!)

Boston sounds great. I only hear good things about it. Whats the allure of Boston to those of you who have mentioned it here??

I practically have stuff nailed to the ceiling just to find storage space for it. Every ounce of furniture has built in storage too. I'm still out of space and I don't even own that much!

I like NYC, though.

I've lived in Boston, Chicago, and New York, and each is great and has its ups and downs. I love NYC best for the city, but sometimes I wish I was a little closer to some stae/national parks because I like to hike and swim outdoors in the summer. Not a big deal in the Northeast, as the summer is a whopping two months long, so I live without. Boston was the best for that because it was two hours to the White Mountains (my favorite mountain range).

I'd need to live in a big city with good transportation for the rest of my life. I can't drive to save my life. Actually, I'd probably cut it short if I bothered to get behind a wheel. I'm pretty sure I'm confined to those three cities because of that. I like them all though.

If I was a bit random I'd maybe try Philadelphia, too. But I'm pretty sure those four cities are my top choices.

Living in another country would be impossible. My language skills are horrible, and I'm a crass American anyways, so probably wouldn't get along with the locals!

1. Lots of colleges means lots of good bands, stores, and culture

2. Boston has its own culture, of course -- good museums and theatres and so on

3. Boston has lots of the things great cities should have but doesn't feel like a city -- it doesn't seem that big. You can walk around a lot of the city easily

4. Lots of educated intelligent people

5. Politics! If you love politics, its a great place to be. (Sports too, but I didn't pay much attention to sports when I lived there)

6. Ocean! The water is damned cold but it's great to be able to take the subway to the beach.

NYC or Vancouver.

Y'all have to get over the Vancouver love, and move on to Victoria, like I have. We could start a KJ ghetto!
