I don't understand how someone could hate this movie. It was very enjoyable, IMO.

Post Re: Alvin and the Chipmunks
i hate it because it's immensely clichéd on top of being not very funny.

I mean, do you know how out-of-character and laughable it was when the bad guy started acting so nice to get the chipmunks to like him, and then as soon as they liked him he dropped the entire nice guy thing so that when Jason Lee came back for them it would make sense for them to join him [especially that "Can I sleep with you?" scene...if he's trying to get the chipmunks to do what he wants, why the hell would he say no to that...he'd be asleep!]?! That has nothing to do with the sense of humor...that's just lame storytelling.

And then the added-in romance story... :puke:

not to mention, it was very disappointing to know that the voices were computer-made, since Justin Long voiced Alvin...i thought they'd be the actual voices of some people with very cool voices.

I only saw this because my Older brother is about to go back to Iraq and He really wanted to see it. Somehow how he found found it enjoyable.

It wasn't painful ,thank god, but it wasn't good either. the film was pretty boring, I didnt laugh once, and the only somewhat watchable part was the first five or ten minutes.

It's pretty weak.

You could make a case for cuteness, but it's just not that good. Never gave me a legitimate laugh(and I'm not that hard to please, honestly), the storyline is predictable, the actors were phoning it in, the female lead and that subplot is totally bland. Jeff hit it on the head... I've seen this movie before.

There was also little moments that just bugged me, for example when Simon gets the in-style glasses, in the tour montage after he's wearing his old circle ones, before it switches back to the squares until he finds his old ones 30 minutes later. Some other things I didn't like was how Lee's original pitch song was in studio-condition from a recording level artist, yet he's a bum who works from his house? And the speed the Chipmunks getting discovered, recorded, played in grocery stores, and ready to go on tour, is just insulting.

Lee and Cross were picking up paycheques. Both are talented comedians but they're phoning it in here. And again, that girl, awful.

The movie also felt a little low-budget at times. I think they used like 5 sets in the entire film. And while I give kudos to the Chipmunks feeling like real characters, not the easiest thing to do, they did look a little disbelievable.

I don't know. I didn't hattte it, it's just a forgettable kids movie that took advantage of the holidays and made a boatload of cash. It's really this year's Night at the Museum.

2/5

Took the GF's nephews to see this today and I liked it. Its cute, has funny moments and brought back some nostalgic memories of the tv show. All the kids in the audience loved it and so too did alot of the parents. I think its fashionable online to knock this and act high and mighty - but its an enjoyable film - especially for kids. And Joe - just like the cartoon Theodore is adorable!

Grade : B-

While completely ignoring the fact that nobody seems to be phased by talking chipmunks (except for Dave), I actually liked the film up to a certain point. Then David Cross killed it. Out of all the people who could've killed this movie, Cross would've been one of the last people on my list. Maybe it was just poor direction, but he takes this way too seriously and it sucks the energy right out of the movie. I know you have to have one part of the movie where the chipmunks and Dave have to split up, but David Cross' character isn't really necessary.

But yeah, it's certainly watchable. The chipmunks are so friggin cute, it's disgusting and some of it is kind of funny. Not enough for me to recommend it, but it's not horrible.

ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS - 7/10 (B-)

A cute but sort of lazy movie. Not much effort was put into it at all and you can tell it was a complete fluke that it was such a huge hit. I didn't like Jason Lee in it. His performance doesn't call for much and yet he can't even manage to be the least bit charasmatic in the role. In fact, he's terrible, as is David Cross. Thankfully it's more about the chipmunks so it doesn't matter too terribly much, but someone else could have brought more to such a simple part.

It definitely wasn't a terrible movie. The problem was just that it wasn't a very good one either.I think the scene that kind of nails it is the one where Dave gives his sales pitch to the agency he works for and they keep interrupting him and revising it to make it more "consumer-friendly." That's how this movie felt. Instead of getting a lot of time with the Chipmunks, we got montages of them performing. Instead of a likeable "straight man," we got Jason Lee, whose character is difficult to like for most of the movie (which is a big problem in this type of movie). Instead of the kind of "man and unlikely creature friend" story like we got in Ratatouille, we got cliche after cliche and a dumb romantic subplot thrown in for no apparent reason. Instead of heart, we got an over-abundance of pop culture references and a few failed jokes too many. It just feels too much like a by-the-numbers product made to entertain kids and not enough like a genuinely enjoyable movie to entertain anyone else, which is too bad since it does have some inspired and even adorable moments.

As far as family entertainment goes, you can do a whole lot worse, but you can also do a whole lot better.

Rating: 2 stars out of 4, C

Well, I always knew I wouldn't be a big fan of this, so lemme just say that it could've been worse. At the end of the day, it's still much better than Garfield and Scooby Doo 2 and on par with the first Scooby Doo film. I have never watched the Chipmunks show, so there's no attachment to the figures on my side. The movie's occasionally funny, the chipmunks are sometimes cute, but often also annoying. However, you can't herlp but like Theodore, he certainly was the best of them! :D

Jason Lee is very wasted here, but David Cross' ridiculous over-the-top performance is actually somewhat amusing. The movie goes by fast and doesn' bore, so kudos for that. It is, of course, quite stupid and at times simply too shildish for me to fully enjoy, but I can see why little kids would dig it. With the whole concept of it being as ridiculous as it is, I suppose it's just fitting that most of the movie is, well, ridiculous. It's alright, though, I've seen worse kiddie flicks in recent years. No anticipation for the second film, though, as far as I am concerned.
