Yikes, did the fan base really dislike it that much?
I thought it was good, but then again, I haven't read any of the books.

Religious freaks, I'm sure that's what is the cause of the low grade.

Not sure why since it didn't get a surge of User Ratings/Reviews or anything. I suppose Yahoo! just didnt update the grade most of the day until then.
And the C is going to be hard to judge because it's obviously skewed from the fake F's that outweigh the fake A's in this case. I think it's safe to say it wouldnt be a C if it didnt have the controversy against it in this case.

Re: Yahoo Review Thread - The Golden Compass
But if you go to the critics forum most posters from this site have been giving it similar grades, not to mention film critics, so i dont think its just because of religious folks.

Re: Yahoo Review Thread - The Golden Compass
I think its a B- without the religious hatred. Which is okay but not great. I know a lot of the fans are disapointed so that could play a role too. So what are we looking at? What is a good comparison in terms of numbers?

The Passion of the Christ had a ratio of 249.69, and I think TGC could approach that ratio. I'd say around $10m.

I barely noticed the anti-religion in the movie at all, I had to read up on it after to see what they were mad about. Religious groups are nuts.

Re: Yahoo Review Thread - The Golden Compass
Two things really screw up that grade: the religious fanatics and the book fanatics. RFs gave it an F without seeing it, and BFs were generally disappointed with it. However, non-readers and non-freaks ( ) have given this quite a solid response from what I can tell. My friends liked it - even though they were skeptical before seeing it - and I know a few adults who found it to be very entertaining. The grade moved up to a C+, meaning more of the general audiences are grading it, and I'm guessing it'll end around a B- when all is said and done. hopefully this'll hold nicely [40% drop?] next weekend. Maybe with IAL/AATC it'll be more like 45%, but as long as it stays under 50%, it's in great shape to pass $100m [considering it took Eragon a 70% drop second weekend drop to "only" manage a 3x multiplier, a 4x multiplier seems more than likely at this point for TGC...i'm hoping it comes closer to 5x, but maybe the WOM is worse among general audiences than it was with the people I asked].

The Perfect Holiday has 37 user reviews and a B+. This says nothing about it's weekend, but Wed. and Thurs. are going to be brutal.

The Perfect Holiday - $385,000
First time actually going back and using other films to predict a range.

I Am Legend - 515 (122) ,+375 (+28), B+ Alvin and the Chipmunks - 200 (19), +191 (+9), B- (down from A-) I was thinking of 90 for I am Legend and 70 for Alvin and the Chipmunks. Looking rather good for Chipmunks.
