I agree that Minas Tirith was missing something. Too many catapults and not enough strategy. PJ should have adhered almost exactly to the book for this battle. Instead, the editing turned weak at crucial moments. (the whole Eowyn battle and Aragorn showing up.)

B+
It was good, but not perfect and not deserving of the bet picture.

Those are pretty much my thoughts as well. The series as a whole I feel are good movies, but nowhere near the masterpieces they're portrayed as. I think I'll give it a B+/B or so, the second best in the series next to Fellowship.
I liked how a blockbuster won Best Picture for once, but I would've much preferred if it was Finding Nemo, Pirates, or Spiderman II, to be honest.

The LOTR series is a masterpiece in itself that will stand the test of time. Like it or not.

I don't.
...and it won't -- Jackson's maladaption of the classic fantasy novel, will be superceded by a mind-blowingly good advanced CGI version in the year 2023.

The man who praises Poseidon and Freddy Got Fingered bashes Lord of the Rings. Nice.

Thank-you, don't think I don't appreciate it.
I'm always happy to be recognized as a guy who calls out good movies despite the anti-hype and who can smell a stinker despite the hyper-hype...
(Though my movie opinions may not be widely shared today, please feel free to archive them and compare to those films' ultimate long term reputation and appreciation. You will be pleasantly surprised.)

awesome awesome awesome!
i love this movie a lotttt but watching the trilogy all over again made me realize how melodramatic and confusing things actually are. I mean if you are not patient and sharp on the mark it could be very easy to get lost, the whole thing, the trilogy, was a bit too long i thought as well - how many pans of magnificent horses riding across new zealand does one person actually need.
Scenes were drawn out for way too long through the series , but it doesn't stop this film from being a classic

I watched the whole trilogy (EE) over the last few days too and I fell in love with it again. Great stuff.

Beautiful, awe-inspiring and spectacular in every way. One of the best films of all-time.

I still think Two Towers was the best. Thought ROTK went on a little too long and the big battle scene wasn't as good as TT

Re: Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
I try and re-watch the Extended Editions every December/January. Im halfway through ROTK now. I think Two Towers benefits most from the Extended Edition as we get to see all the Osgilioth drama with Faramir and Boromir. ROTK suffers a little as it gets longer and as Erendis once pointed - the end battle is cut differently.
I now lean towards FOTR as my favourite overall and I love the second half of Towers but the first half lets it down a little. ROTK is ROTK - i'll re-grade it once i finish it again.
For now:
FOTR: A+ TTT: A (First half B+, Second half A++) ROTK: A+
Overall Trilogy: A+

Re: Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
My favorite movie of the decade so far. It's tough for me to imagine a more satisfying capper to such an amazing trilogy. There wasn't a moment in the entire 200-minute running time that didn't take my breath away. It's perfect proof of why The Lord of the Rings will be remembered for decades to come.
Grade: A

Re: Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Easily the worst of the trilogy. Not only is it long and boring at points, but at many times is filled with plotholes as well too much ridiculous for its own good. After the fantastic first and second films, this one really is the weakest.
FOTR- A TTT- A+ ROTK- B

A+ yeah right, the dullness of the movie is so ingrained into each scene that it would be totally impossible for the film to receive anything above an A-. The editing had nothing on the first two. Its like PJ got lazy with the last one, or tried way to hard, its over bloated and overlong very similar to kong.

Re: Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
a great conclusion to what's undoubtedly been the best trilogy I've ever seen. Definitely not as strong in a storytelling sense nor as emotionally resonant as Fellowship of the Ring, but better in both cases than The Two Towers. But in reality, looking at stuff like Godfather Part III, it's a miracle that this turned out so well.
A+

to be fair guys... lord of the rings is one book of three parts. can't compare to other trilogies on an oranges-to-oranges basis.
