Post Biggest surprises at this year's Oscar nominations
Remember last year's omission of Cold Mountain for the Best Picture nomination? Well, if that wasn't a surprise then I don't know what is. What do you think will be the biggest surprises this time around? Oh and try to stay somewhat realistic (i.e. don't say "The Aviator will be snubbed", heh).

I think the biggest possible surprise would be if David Carradine AND Uma Thurman were nominated for Kill Bill Vol. 2 Considering the rather weak Best Actress category (with probably only Swank and Benning being locks at this point, maybe Staunton) and the fact that beyond Church, Freeman and Owen the Best Supporting Catgory is pretty much open, I think it is certainly possible.

What do you think will be the big surprises?

I say: Closer, Kinsey, Phantom of the Opera and Ray won't get a Best Picture nomination! That would be a little surprise, don't you think?

By the way: I think the nominations will be:

- The Aviator
- Hotel Rwanda
- Sideways
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- Million Dollar Baby

Even better - I change my nominations: Hotel Rwanda won't be nominated as well!

These are my final Best Picture Noms:

- The Aviator
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- House of Flying Daggers
- Million Dollar Baby
- Sideways

= Hotel Rwanda, Closer, Kinsey, Ray, Phantom of the Opera, The Incredibles, Finding Neverland and all the others won't be nominated!!!

I not sure, how do you classify a big surprise and how would that compare to the already existing, I guess that is redundant in a Lecter thread, Your OUTRAGEOUS OSCAR Predictions?

But those are different kinds of movies..utterly and completely. I mean City of God made IMDB's TOP 25 films, I think.

Actually, at this point, I think Closer being nominated for Best Picture will be a surprise. At least to me, anyway.

Hopefully Best Actress will give a few surprises, like Julie Delpy or Julia Roberts.

Closer being nominated would certainly be a huge surprise at this point. However, after the BFCA list, I think pretty much all hope is lost for it.

this is mine too...

A surprise would for me Garden State as original screenplay and Alan Alda as supporting actor. I would cheer the whole day if either happens

I get this feeling that Johnny Depp won't be nominated for best actor. There just seems to be so much talent in that category and his performance is least deserving.

A surprise for me would be to see Kill Bill Volume 2 nominated for anything, because at this point it doesn't seem to be factoring in on any of the races. Even a sound or sound editing nomination would surprise me.

We are talking the nominations.

I think the biggest possible surprise would be Hotel Rwanda getting Screenplay, Director, Picture, Actor and Supporting Actress nods.

After SAG and WGA noms, Cheadle, screenplay and s. actress wouldn't be a surprise really. Even Best Picture wouldn't be a surprise. Are you talking about all of these awards together?

Terry George being nominated would be a surprise though considering that everyone I talked to seems to think that if there is any weakness in the film it comes from some of the direction.

Yes, all together :)

That'd be a MAJOR surprise since Terry George looks really unlikely to receive a nom as of now. I'd even say that Yimou has a better shot.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Hotel Rwanda gets all those noms. If you watched Globe closely, Hotel Rwanda got the biggest applause by far each time it was mentioned. The audience, which consists of many academy members (actors/actresses, directors, etc.), loves it. As long as there are enough voters who saw the film, and I think there are considering Hotel Rwanda had over 25 screenings, far more than The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby had, it has an excellent chance.
