Re: WorldofKJ Top 10 Films Of 2007 (Discussion)
I think we should change the deadline to coincide with the 2007 WOKJ Motion Picture Awards so that 1) the WOKJ Top 10 list won't yet be available to influence the WOKJ MPA voting, 2) easier on the user to make both the list and their ballots at the same time, 3) more incentive and time to catch up on movies before the deadline. Also maybe Sunday or Monday instead of Tuesday January 21 so these doesn't get lost in the shuffle of the Oscar nominations.

Updated my top ten in the other thread. A big overhaul, if I do say so myself.

There's a chance that Zodiac has finally been knocked off as #1 on my list... and considering it was by a film that didn't crack my top ten the first time I saw it, I must say I'm rather surprised, but really pleased. I'm still thinking it over a bit.

Re: WorldofKJ Top 10 Films Of 2007 (Discussion)
I saw two "Oscar" movies tonight, Control and Charlie Wilson's War. It was strange seeing a movie that is so expertly constructed, so precise and *ehm* controlled, and then seeing one that is kind of a formal mess. Anton Corbijn has moments of Kubrickian clarity in Control. Every shot, every frame is carefully considered and composed. I haven't seen a movie with aesthetics this consistent and profound in, well... a long time.

Why does the deadline have to be the 15th? Couldn't you move it a couple of days? Just for foreigners if you don't wanna do it for everyone. Please understand that not everyone can see all the oscar contenders so easily. If you don't move the deadline then this list won't really reflect what KJ's best films of 2007 are, just what people got to see before the deadline. I'm sure if you did one list on the 15th, and another list a week later it would be different.

hat is not quite correct for me, for instance. But I understand the reasoning here. However, the Motion Picture awards of WOKJ, that are not for the main site, that's where I really don't get the early deadline.

Amazingly enough, the top 10 list I posted a few weeks ago might remain standing.
I saw There Will Be Blood this evening and I don't think it will make my top 10.

Still want to see before the deadline: Zodiac, Jesse James, Sweeney (?), Margot and Lars. Juno and Michael Clayton - not so much. Both Sideways and Little Miss Sunshine failed to make my top 10, and MC gives me the impression of a well made movie without spark.

So much for Juno making the Top 10. I think when all is said and done, my list is going to look virtually identical. I still need to see There Will Be Blood, Charlie Wilson's War, Atonement, Sweeney Todd, and for shits and gigles - I Am Legend. If any films have a chance, I'd say the first two do.

Juno didn't quite make it, but I still thought it was great.
There Will Be Blood is the only one that's left (with a chance, at least), but I'm having trouble finding someone to see it with (and it's in the city, so I'm not the type to go into the city just to see a flick, let alone by myself), so I don't know if I'll manage it before the deadline unless a screener shows up. I refuse to see films by myself so I'm kind of in a jam, 'cause I really do wanna see it.

Just watched Persepolis and its a definate edition to my top 10. You won't find many other films that treat its subject matter with such style.

Persepolis opens here sometime in February, so I wont get to see it in time for the awards and top ten stuff, but the trailer, which plays every time I go to the theater that will open it, is among my favorite of the year. Glad to hear good word.

I normally don't download movies, but I found a high quality screener of Atonement and No Country For Old Men. Chances are I won't see either movie in theaters before the deadline, so I'll watch both tomorrow. And even though I've already seen NCFOM, I'm thinking with a repeat viewing it can only get better. Hopefully the site also puts up a screener for There Will Be Blood before the deadline.

Gullimont wrote: Just watched Persepolis and its a definate edition to my top 10. You won't find many other films that treat its subject matter with such style. Yeah, I'm with ya all the way on this one Gulli. I've never seen a movie so personal deal with issues that are so huge and ultimately universal. And it does so in an almost entirely visual manner. The aesthetics of Persepolis are so inventive and so finely tuned and sharpened that you could watch it on mute and still get most of the impact. This is a shining example of the power expressionistic movie making is capable of. What we have here is essentially your basic coming of age story, with a very smooth and simple narrative that is crafted like a flashback and broken up into specific time frames, that is jam-packed with worldly themes and concepts - religion, war, oppression, feminism, puberty, love - that are viewed from an entirely subjective perspective in an aesthetically consistent and beautiful manner. Things that have become drilled into our collective subconscious to look and feel a certain way become entirely new and fresh in Persepolis. The war scenes, for example, look like something out of Fritz Lang's M, as opposed to the Private Ryan "YOU ARE THERE" aesthetic we have been spooned by filmmakers lately. I told myself a couple of weeks ago that it would take a miracle for a movie to enter the heights of my two designated masterpieces this year (No Country and Jesse James). Persepolis is a miracle. It is simultaneously hilarious, heartbreaking, heart warming, informative, beautiful, stirring... any arbitray adjective you wanna throw at this movie is going to stick like fucking glue.

Okay, so I will be seeing Lust, Caution later today and likely Enchanted tomorrow.
I won't catch everything, even the things that are out here.
Would you recommend me to seek out Control, even if it means driving to another city?

It's a great film. There's also a screener online. Loyal, I don't download movies. All the legal perspetive aside, I just prefer seeing them on the big screen and the experience of seeing the film for the first time is just unique, so...

I took the "even if it means driving to another city" as being driving to another city is a deciding factor. I drove 3 hours to see Sith a week early and Charlie and the Chocolate Factore a few months early. I have no issues with driving. Okay, but it was Sith and a Tim Burton movie a few months early. This is...Control. Heh.

Oddly enough, Control looks rather appealing to me. And I'm not big on biopics.

Would you recommend me to seek out Control, even if it means driving to another city? How far is the drive? Cuz if its "another city" like less than an hour away, absolutely. 1.5 hours? Yeah. 2+? Eh...that's your call...but it's one of the best biopics I've seen and definitely worth seeking out.
