Why doesn't the BFCA have a Best Film Editing category? Weird.
Peace, Mike

On the Ellen Page note, I actually think it would be a bad thing for her to win a Best Actress Oscar. She's so young, she would have that label for the rest of her career and I think it might hurt her.

 Re: BFCA Party Down Thread
It's a pity that people think Juno's a better comedy than Knocked Up or Superbad. On the dramatic scale, maybe, as it did a great job there, but for a film that really just didn't make me laugh much, compared to two films that had me near tears of laughter, it's pretty lame. But I guess serio-comedies always get the edge when it comes to awards ceremonies.
Which makes me wonder this: Will Judd Apatow ever be honored by the Academy? For all we know, he could crank out fantastic comedies for the next thirty years, but even his brilliant stuff now is coming nowhere nearing Oscar contention. Will they award him some day just because he's so damn good? Because I could never see a film like Knocked Up winning Best Picture, but I couldn't see a good who makes fifteen films that good getting avoided.

It's a good thing we only let these critics on (limitedly viewed tv) once a year.

No, D.L., I don't think we'll be seeing you again next year, actually.
To wash this taste out I shall watch a tape of the 2002 Oscars! Yay Steve Martin!

Yeah, so that kind of sucked.
It doesn't feel as bad when the show is only 2 hours, though.

The scenes with Leslie Mann trying to get into the club or talking with Paul Rudd, 100x more dramatic than anything in Juno. It's telling that Ellen Page seems so bewildered all the time. I'm bewildered too Page. Nah, I'm a guy who loved Knocked Up and thought Juno's dramatic aspects were handled equally well...I just thought that it had SO many attempts at humor that just fell completely flat with me that I could never call it a great film like I could call Knocked Up.

While I Loved Juno, Knocked Up hell of a lot funnier than it. Juno though, handled the drama very well. I dont see Juno winning DP, NCFOM or TWBB have gained to much momentum in terms of awards to really sit back and see Juno win now. The only thing besides rave reviews Juno has going for is it, that general wom is fantastic and it's BO is on fire, which could benefit it. As for Judd, he may be, he may not his films are probably just to "childish" for the Academy.

Yeah, not too much interesting tonight. Only real big event IMO was Christie's win, indicating that the size of her film and role just might not matter. Well, barring a last minute surge from Page and all.

Um, so um, No Country is overrated. I sort of agree, but I'm finding it a bit hard to fault it for winning stuff. I mean, I do have it as my #6 of the year.

 Re: BFCA Party Down Thread
It does appear that the three year-long streak of my #2 movie of the year going on to win the Best Picture Oscar (Million Dollar Baby in 2004, Crash in 2005, The Departed in 2006) is going to come to an end, unless Atonement suddenly picks up steam somehow.

 Re: BFCA Party Down Thread
How my predictions went down:
Best Picture No Country for Old Men Alt. Juno
Best Actor Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood Alt. George Clooney - Michael Clayton
Best Actress Ellen Page - Juno Alt. Julie Christie - Away From Her
Best Supporting Actor Javier Bardem - No Country for Old Men Alt. Hal Holbrook - Into the Wild
Best Supporting Actress Amy Ryan - Gone Baby Gone Alt. Cate Blanchett - I'm Not There
Best Acting Ensemble No Country for Old Men Alt. Juno
Best Director Joel Coen and Ethan Coen - No Country for Old Men Alt. Sean Penn - Into the Wild
Best Writer Diablo Cody - Juno Alt. Joel Coen and Ethan Coen - No Country for Old Men
Best Animated Feature Ratatouille Alt. Persepolis
Best Young Actor Michael Cera - Juno Alt. Michael Cera - Superbad
Best Young Actress Saoirse Ronan - Atonement Alt. Nikki Blonsky - Hairspray
Best Comedy Movie Juno Alt. Knocked Up
Best Family Film Hairspray Alt. Enchanted
Best Picture Made for Television The War Alt. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
Best Foreign Language Film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Alt. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days
Best Song "Falling Slowly", Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, Jesse L. Martin and Cast - Once Alt. "Come So Far", Queen Latifah, Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, Elijah Kelley - Hairspray
Best Composer Dario Marianelli - Atonement Alt. Jonny Greenwood - There Will Be Blood
Best Documentary No End In Sight Alt. The King of Kong
So, 10/17 overall, plus 4 alternates. Only Ensemble, Young Actor and Documentary (Stupid me on that one) blindsided me. Not too awful.
