Yeah, it's not really the subject at hand, but Reds is so much better than Chariots of Fire it's offensive.

The Chariots score is so cheesy now in today standards but so memorable. honestly, you only see that music used in comedy TV shows and stuff, where it's used for a phony-funny purpose. Nothing like that could be taken seriously today...but back then it represented inspiration just like Rocky's theme did.

Re: An Open Letter To The Academy: Please Don't Let Juno Win
I'll admit, though I don't think Juno is even close to deserving of a win, I think it could interesting to see it win if only to do away with all this "the Academy is so out of touch with the moviegoers" shit for at least a year. When will people realize it's the other way around?

That's true. Juno will be far and away the audience favorite, and with all the negativity surrounding the Academy over the past few years because of picking films like Million Dollar Baby and Crash, they might get frightened into choosing this over a film they'd normally go for [NCFOM or TWBB].

Everyone I knew said they wanted Little Miss Sunshine to win, even though I personally would have ripped my hair out if Scorsese lost yet again to a weaker film. I don't think it was a clear audience favorite like Juno is. People liked NCFOM, TWBB is doing well with its small audience, Atonement is getting a solid response, and everyone likes but nobody loves Michael Clayton/Into the Wild, so Juno is without a doubt what all general audiences want to see win at this point.

Re: An Open Letter To The Academy: Please Don't Let Juno Win
I think Little Miss Sunshine would have been a more audience-friendly pick than The Departed. Don't get me wrong, Departed was definitely an audience hit, but I think LMS is more accessible, being an offbeat but uplifting comedy as opposed to a bloody, badass action flick.

Departed was the audience pick. It had the box-office, it had the stars, it had the insane WOM. I think Departed's status among common folk as a "classic" is as good as just about any movie this decade, discluding LOTR. Everyone loves that movie.

Re: An Open Letter To The Academy: Please Don't Let Juno Win
I honestly don't think so. I think it deserves to be called a classic, but among those I know, it hardly is. Among my teenage friends, aside from an elite few who share my love of it, most people just think it's okay. Among all the film-savvy people I know, they think it was only awarded the Oscar to award Scorsese. It isn't as big as we all think it is in the real world. But still, it's doing all right.

It is Goodfellas for the new generation probably, just even more popular. Doesn't say anything about its quality (which is great, IMO), but its status.

Yes, I too would much rather see Atonement get a nomination.
