You're not alone : )

It's been one night but I've immediately put it ahead of Rat for #1 on my 07 list, and I had that in my ymdb top 30 created yesterday... I'll have to let my mind settle before deciding on where this goes, but it's on there for sure.

I really enjoyed this. It's not as good as The Princess Bride, but it was very entertaining for the most part. Certainly one of the more purely enjoyable of the year, in fact. It gives you the warm fuzzies, has a lot of decent low-key comedy, and has some pretty good "action" sequences. Claire Danes is wonderful as the fallen star (I cannot recall another outing where she was this appealing) and Charlie Cox conveys an earnest likeability. Robert DeNiro is a riot in his brief running time and appears to be having a lot of fun, while notable British actors like Peter O'Toole, Sienna Miller, Ricky Gervais and Rupert Everett make token appearences. Perhaps the standout is Michelle Pfeiffer, who has now delivered two terrific villains over the summer (this and Hairspray); she plays it well, and it's nice to see her doing a steady stream of films again. Lots of fun. B+

I found the story to be oddly refreshing and unique. A lot of interesting characters - not just your usual fantasy. And the continued theme of characters not being who they are and thinking they have to live up to a reputation or marry into a higher class or whatnot was pretty solid.

I must have been high or something, because for a really long time during the movie I was thinking Yvaine was Gwyneth Paltrow. And then it clued in that she was Claire Danes near the end, when she was doing her usual "Claire Danes" faces in the wagon during her speech. Anyways.

De Niro was wonderful! It was unlike anything I've ever seen from him. Great work breaking out of his mold.

Unusual.

Such a cute and FUN film, with a heart that many movies don't possess these days, it rings true, and it really looks like it was made ages ago, in a good way (I mean, even the special effects are deliciously retro!). Great perfomances, specially Pfeiffer and De Niro - both of them should remain in my personal ballot at the end of the year. Great messages in a beautiful, funny and exciting package. Hard to want more on a Friday night.

Just saw this tonight and its bloody brilliant. Exteremely entertaining, funny and much much better than I expected.

Best film of the year so far. Grade : A+

Its a very happy film. Structurally its a bit hit and miss but its never boring and thats good enough for me.

Also Michelle Pfeiffer looked god damned amazing when in full youth mode.

I dunno why the hell they didn't keep this for a Christmas release, it would have made a mint.

it's good, and should've done better at the box office, but it's becoming a huge hit on the internet, and it's really not that special, as it does blatantly take after a lot of movies. I did really enjoy it, and Robert DeNiro's little bit was knee-slappingly funny to watch.

It's just such a great cinematic example of how you can do it all with film.

B+. Pretty good but doesn't really try hard enough to achieve greatness. The lead boy was a blank slate of blandness, there is too much whimsy and not enough humor, and I was left wishing we'd learned more about some of the side characters such as Gervais and Una, both of whom were more interesting than the leads. De Niro's role was kind of a shrug, the type of role that you can easily see Robin Williams doing. His turning out to be friendly drained a lot of the tension from the plot, it made things too easy. Overall a good fantasy film, but not the home run it could have been.

It started off pretty well but got really, really boring mid-way. Nothing really stand-out about this film at all, it's not even entertaining enough to get some credit.

Yet another ridiculously overrated film at WOKJ.

I nitpicked a few things but I liked it even more on second viewing and would put it in my top 5 for this year. It's the kind of fantasy film I wish we'd see more of instead of overblown epics.

They get extra points for having the guts not to make Sienna Miller the romantic lead like most movie would have.

I agree with Gulli that they should have saved it for December.

I just watched this again today and I still love it. It's a fun, humorous, and entertaining fantasy film. I really wish it had done better at the box office. A-

This is the type of movie that will definitely find a wider audience now that it's on DVD. The Princess Bride didn't exactly set the world on fire at the box office, and look what happened to that. Now, Stardust won't achieve that same kind of massive fan base, but I doubt it will slink into obscurity either.

Ummm...so I just watched this, and I don't think I could have liked the movie more if it had blown me. Actually, considering my euphoria after it ended, I'm not sure it didn't.

Guys, this was something special, a imperfect yet legitimately great movie.

It remains in my top 5 of the year and will probably end up there. It's really one of the more spirited films in forever. It has a ... glee to it. Made me real happy.

This is a lock for a final top 10 of the year. Possibly top 5, depending how the rest of the movies I have yet to see fare.

Agree. Im yet to see dozens of films from 07 but I suspect Stardust will remain firmly in my top 5. Its currently sharing No.1 with Lives of Others.

Cute. I wish it would have taken itself a bit more seriously. Could have been brilliant then. But as is, it was a cute movie. B

That about sums it up for me as well. It was a cute movie. Nothing stupendous, but decent.

Claire Danes was lovely.
