 Re: VFX shortlist
SM3's effects kinda blew, so no shocker. And HP5 wasn't too big on effects (Outside of spells flying around), so I guess that shouldn't be either. Still, Evan Almighty and I Am Legend? Ew.
How I'd rank 'em in terms of odds:
1. “Transformers†2. “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End†3. “300â€Â
4. “The Golden Compass†5. “I Am Legend†6. “The Bourne Ultimatum†7. “Evan Almightyâ€Â

 Re: VFX shortlist
Don't underestimate Bourne since it is by far the best-received movie of the crop. I wouldn't be shocked to see 300, Transformers and Bourne being nominated

I pretty much agree with Jon's list.

Actually, that probably gives Evan Almighty a better shot at a nom than Bourne, so swap those two in my rankings. Also, with The Golden Compass a domestic bomb, IAL might even have a better shot, with not only its creature effects (Which were kinda crappy), but also transforming New York City into an abandoned wasteland (Which was kinda cool). After all, they did give Gladiator the Oscar for the Coliseum effect mostly.

 Re: VFX shortlist
I think it will be Pirates, Transformers and The Golden Compass (much like how Narnia snuck in).
Peace, Mike

Evan Almighty has water and animals. GOLD! for the VFX members.
Now awaiting Makeup bakeoff...

Now awaiting Makeup bakeoff... $10 Norbit makes that bake-off. You know it's gonna happen.

 Re: VFX shortlist
wow...they did a shit job with that shortlist...I don't wanna even make predictions if these are the people who chose Evan Almighty and I Am Legend over SM3 or Harry Potter [neither of the two films had OUTSTANDING FX, but they were a hell of a lot better than EA or IAL].
1. Transformers 2. 300 [please, please, please let it get nominated] 3. The Golden Compass 4. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
that's the competing four right there, and the only lock is Transformers. Any of the other three could miss out. if EA gets in, though, I will be pretty fuckin' upset.

 Re: VFX shortlist
The Spidey snub makes me think Pirates is pretty vulnerable. There's definitely a backlash towards the movies, although Pirates has made it further because of the water effects

 Re: VFX shortlist
Eh, I thought Evan had better VFX than the Golden Compass. I would say better than I Am Legend too if it was going off just the zombies, but the shots of NYC... fannnntastic.

 Re: VFX shortlist
That's what a lot of people are forgetting, the NYC shots in I Am Legend, probably those alone were the best visual effects this year.

There was a big thing in New York where they'd close off large streets to be able to shoot the movie. I think only the broken bridge and stuff that couldn't be done manually were added in FX. And considering the most notable FX are the vampires....I don't see IAL getting in.

 Re: VFX shortlist
300 completely deserves the win, but I have a very strange feeling that it'll get snubbed from a nom entirely. Sin City couldn't pick up a nomination, after all.

 Re: VFX shortlist
What an amazingly shitty list. EA over SM3? Wow. Just wow.
AWE had the best effects of the year hands down. It really deserves to win. I think the noms will be: Golden Compass (winter fantasy, which the Academy LOVES to nominate, and box office isn't that big a factor, Poseidon bombed yet still got a nom), Pirates 3 (DMC won, and they are suckers for water effects), Transformers (duh). Transformers will probably win.
