First Ringers trash every damn movie in sight so obnoxiously, then ESOTSMers try a smear campaign against Sideways (Which I hadn't even seen but began rooting for in protest), and now this. Damn Oscar loonies.

Stop having fun in this thread! I see that this thread grew three pages overnight only to find that it's funny conversations I miss out on... Again.
Anyways Atonement has 7 100s out of 19 reviews on Metacritic, it'll need to have a real nose drive in reviews to have that be a factor. Besides, it and Into the Wild can both easily be nominated. It'd be even easier if Sweeney Todd hadn't jumped in Charlie Wilson War's spot the moment it fell out.

I have yet to truly let rabid fans color my opinions on a film. In the end I still greatly preferred ESOTSM to Sideways, and still haven't seen Mystic River and still consider LOTR close to my heart, Ringers be damned. And I'll forever remain a reluctant Burton fan (I've at least liked most of his films that I've seen, but am hardly rabid), so I'll probably find myself at Sweeney Todd sooner rather than later. Love the sin, hate the sinner? Atonement meanwhile is back up to 84 on Metacritic with nine 100s out of twenty-four.

 Re: The Contenders III
Oh, Atonement will lead the Globes easely methinks.
Even Cold Mountain had 8 noms. The English Patient had 7. Atonement should at least match that, and has a great shot in the exact same categories of that one, LOL. (Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Sup. Actress (x2?), Score and Screenplay?)
As for my predictions right now, I'm really thinking these 3 are locked, and the Oscar will go to one of these:
- No Country for Old Men - Atonement - Sweeney Todd
then, there's the big sensation called Juno, the "safe" Michael Clayton, PTA's There Will Be Blood and that's probably it. I'm going with the first two (though a part of me still thinks that Juno=Ghost World to some extent...) - that makes an interesting and ecletic group.

 Re: The Contenders III
Yeah, the race is far from over. In fact, I think the contest for Picture could easily come down to the wire.
Currently, my Picture lineup is:
Atonement Juno Michael Clayton No Country for Old Men Sweeney Todd
NCFOM is a lock for the nomination. Though the win is still very much up in the air (since, let's face it, we're not even close to having a really clear winner at this point), I don't think it can miss as far as the nomination goes. I'm also definitely buying into the Sweeney Todd hype, and I think that if it hits like I expect it to, it could win it all. Atonement seems pretty likely for a nod, but I doubt its ability to win unless it does really, really well at the box office and cleans house with all the precursors.
Michael Clayton is a bit of a gamble on my part. I really think this movie has a great shot at a nod. Honestly: Clooney is highly respected in Hollywood, the movie got very nice reviews, it performed respectably at the box office, is on target to be the big gun for Warner Bros (which has had a film nominated for Picture 3 years in a row and won in 2 of them), and looks to pick up some really nice support from the acting branch. I think it stands incredibly little chance of winning, but I could definitely see it being nominated.
Juno is the one I'm really not sure about. It's gotten great reviews and Ellen Page is drawing buzz, along with the screenplay. The critics have backed it nicely as well. But is it really Oscar-y? My placement of it here comes down to a few factors: 1.) It's a fun, light movie in crowd of heavy material. Not that there's a law that can't happen (just look at 2005 for example), but surely there will be some voters who will opt for a more enjoyable picture after seeing so many dark ones. 2.) The studio angle. If I were to replace it with any one movie in my predictions, it would be There Will Be Blood. But here's the deal with that: Paramount Vantage is campaigning multiple pictures this year, NCFOM being one of them. Into the Wild and Kite Runner also appear to be solid contenders. On the other hand, Juno seems to undoubtedly be Fox Searchlight's big gun, which is quite telling of their confidence in the film considering how well The Savages has been received. 3.) It seems like this should fill the quirky comedy bill with the voters.

 Re: The Contenders III
Atonement is inching back up on RT to 86%/88% COTC, and 85 on Metacritic with eleven 100s out of thirty, behind only Ratatouille and NCFOM for most 100s this year.

Yeah, Atonement will lead the Globes, no question there. I think it might miss an Actor nom, though, the category's too crowded. I'm thinking: Picture Director Actress Supporting Actress Supporting Actress Screenplay Score That'd make it 7. I think Screenplay is a bit questionable at this point, the rest should happen. Much like Cold Mountain I don't expect it to win more than one, though, maybe even come out empty-handed.

If it does win one, Score? I doubt that, I think some other films like There Will Be Blood might be ahead of it in that department. No, if it wins one, it might be just a random Best Picture win, similar to Babel last year. It is pretty certainly not winning Director, Supporting Actress (will split votes anyway) and Screenplay.

I didn't fell in love with Zodiac as much as I hoped to. I found it very solid, but still "just" B+-level. However, I would just love to finally see recognition for Fincher and his direction was truly great once again.

If nothing else, by the way, Atonement should (or needs to) be a lock for Score. Download "Briony" off iTunes. It's even more wonderful in the context of the film.

 Re: The Contenders III
I feel a bit ridiculous for saying this, but all I'm saying is: Don't count I Am Legend out COMPLETELY just yet...
"One of the greatest movies ever made." -E!
"The best movie of the year. One of the most entertaining, exciting, and intense movies ever made." -Shawn Edwards, Fox-TV
"Will Smith is Oscar-worthy. You will not forget this performance." -Kelli Gillespie, FOX-TV
"A stunning movie experience. Will Smith delivers a dynamic tour de force." -Hollywood Close-ups
I don't care that these aren't big critics...how many films get reviews like that at all?!

I had been touting the score since I saw the trailer late summer. I was disappointed that they didn't use the more epic second half trailer music (I wonder where they got that from since now I don't think it was written for the movie) and ultimately they used that ingenious score too many times in the film. The typewriter was insane but it did get way too repetitive especially once the film moved on to the war. It's a lock for a nomination. But I do think something like Ratatouille could possible be a spoiler. Right now, the biggest threat is There Will Be Blood's score but I'm getting a stronger feeling by the day that TWBB is not going to resonate with the Academy.
