 Re: Juno
I guess, in terms of dialogue, I was expecting "That's one doodle that can't be undid, homeskillet" the whole time but was pleasantly surprised to find it really reined it in.
I'll admit that I didn't love all of Juno's (the character's) snappy dialogue. It was a bit much at times, a little annoying. But I think all 16-year-old girls are a little annoying. Even the cute, witty ones.

 Re: Juno
Yep, in the first 10 minutes the whole homeskillet thing (which my friends do use sometimes, rarely) was annoying but after that it really fell into place. Starts of, trying quite hard to be quarky.. after the first 10 minutes, and when Juno tell her parents the new, it really falls into place and I fell into love with the movie. This is a quarky movie, with odd character but the love in this film feels very raw, and very much real. Ellen Page, is spunky, attitude filled and lovely as Juno, and by the end really captures your heart. Micheal Cera is so understated, very mum but very good in his role. Alison Janney who always make the most out of her small parts (ala Hairspray, "DEVIL CHILD, DEVIL CHILD".) really steals scenes her. Jennifer Garner, is also quite good which I didn't expect. The film is real, and is raw. Not very relateable, because well I doubt I'll get pregnant..ever, but still the character are very authentic. I loved it. The crowd's response was very odd. Scattered claps, but this is the first time were the whole theatre still sat there after the credits. I had to piss really bad, so I left in a hurry but ya.A

School smart? Give me a break. I know how 16-year-olds talk, I am one. They don't talk like that character, it's obviously an idiot with a name like Diablo Cody who thinks she knows how teens talk. Poor Page...poor Cera, for that matter.
Fuck this "quirky" shit, it's ruined indie films in the last few years.

I don't want to derail the thread with an explanation of my rating system, though I think the record so far is: ∞ out of 5... The Bad: The entire first act and half of the second act was sunk by piss poor dialogue. I know its supposed to be snappy and pop influenced. But as someone who sat through 4 years of screenwriting courses and know very well the type, I grew tired of Diablo's work within 10 minutes. It's odd, I should really be questioning that Juno somehow changed as a character, though not through motivation or learning something about herself via the pregnancy. She changed because Diablo either gave up the quirks or ran out. It's tough to spit out a grade right now, I'm still in love with the final act. Hmm, B, maybe B+ I really wonder if there was an uncredited rewrite on the second half of Juno. It's basically two different films. Its good to say, confidently, that you are alone in your thoughts there.

 Re: Juno
By the way, you guys don't know teenagers very well from the looks of things. There are circles where Juno is a real person, sure shes not the everygirl at school, but she does exist. I knew a Juno, she wasn't pregnant, but she quipped like her.
I think its unfair to say one segment of society doesnt exist just because its not dominant. People like Juno do exist. I know a few.
Sad to see Juno getting the popularity backlash. When indies become popular, snobs turn their noses up. Its like musicals or indie, unfounded artists. Don't act like when your favourite undiscovered artist got discovered and everyone went wild for them you didnt get turned off!

 Re: Juno
Loved it. Needed more Raiin Wilson though. Jason Bateman and Juno's relationship was the only off thing, a little creepy. Acting wise, perfection, not sure about Garner though.

Its good to say, confidently, that you are alone in your thoughts there. Surprise surprise, I absolutely agree with loyal that Garner was awful, the only weak link in an otherwise strong cast. Creepy is a very good way to describe her performance. The audience is supposed to have this huge spin on their feelings between the couple, but I actually could totally understand why Bateman would be begging to get off that crazy ship. Anyways, I more or less agree with loyal otherwise, though I was slightly more enamoured with the film. At first it really reminded me of Napoleon Dynamite with the snappy dialogue - and yeah, it was not very believable among the minors - but after awhile it started to ease into itself and worked a lot more. Waitress would still get my vote as the best pregnancy comedy this year, but it was much better than Knocked Up. I feel like the only one who thought it was a big step down from The 40 Year-Old Virgin, but I could barely get through it on repeat viewings.

 Re: Juno
Hmm...
This was a very good film: not a A+ masterpiece, yet not deserving of this 'popularity backlash' mentioned by Michael either. Ellen Page, besides being a little annoying early on, was simply outstanding, and I thought Cera actually did a fantastic job as well. Simmons and Janney are engaging in every scene their in, and make use of their relatively short screen time. Garner I think was picture perfect, she was meant to be oddly creepy so that it was hard to decide who was "right" in the rift between her and her husband. In the end, she completes her performance by at least making me feel as if while her husband isn't 100% to blame, this woman's pain and suffering she has endured as a result of her desire to finally have a child are all results of human nature, and she can't be blamed for her sometimes obsessive-compulsive/paranoid manner before actually holding her child in her arms. The dialogue was a little too fake at times, I agree there, but I DO know a person JUST like Juno in real life. Relatively popular, witty, one who hangs in many different groups, not afraid to speak her mind, just everything fit her exactly. So those who claim Juno is a fake character are very wrong in my opinion.

Wait, who cares if the dialogue they speak is "fake"? It's not fake to Juno and Leah in the movie, it's how they choose to speak. It's not like there was a blinking sign during the film that said "ATTENTION: THIS IS HOW EVERY TEENAGER IN AMERICA SPEAKS. TAKE NOTICE!"

 Re: Juno
First things first people IT'S A MOVIE! The people on screen, are made up fictional characters. They have never and will never speak like or converse like people in the real world, its a movie, its fantasy, its not reality. So stop complaining about the conversations not being realistic. The great thing about movies is that they are an over-exagerated, un-realistic portrayal of life. They (movies) are designed to point out the absurdities and nuances and then blow them up to extreme proportions so that we can laugh, cry, spite, love, etc, them and thus feel better about ourselves, it meant to be a cathartic experience. If you can't relate to the dialoge in one movie fine, there are dozens of other films out there you can. So to criticize this film for its unbelieveable dialoge is just plain dumb. If you didn't like it fine, its your opinion and your entitled to it, but don't cop out and blame the dialoge. As far as the movie go's I really enjoyed this film. I found it to be extremely funny, in a genuine natural way as opposed to a forced or contrived one. The performances were great with Page really putting it all out there, and for once I wasn't annoyed by Bateman. The soundtrack was really good and its quirkiness really blended well with the films. Plus I really liked the films dialoge and its arcane pop-culture references, as I am old enough to get them. Juno is definately one of the years best films. Grade A

My niece saw this today and informed me that, among her sold out audience, roughly 90% were middle school/high school-aged kids.
Considering the average age of the audience when I saw it was probably around 40...
Wow.

Ugh this is like the first film I hate before even seeing it. This annoys me, but based on the trailers and clips this seems terrible.
I hope to be on Loyals side when I do see it, but if its great ill be happy as well.
