I figured I'd combine these two mainly because there are SO MANY critics announcing now, and these guys DO have some interesting stuff going on.

St. Louis: These guys were actually looking pretty awesome to me, with their six nominees largely bucking normal trend...until I realized Katherine Heigl was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. There are so many things wrong with that I refuse to list them because they're so annoying, not least of which is a subject I've been pimping for a while. . .:whistle:

Still, these are pretty interesting nominees. Gosling gets ANOTHER nomination for Lars, his fourth this season. Could he be a threat at SAG this Thursday? :ohmy: Also, Sweeney makes their Top 10, Burton and the Score are noted...and no Depp, even with six nominees. :huh: I still think he's in and all, but the critic's lack of mentions for him are nothing short of odd. Oh, and all three men of NCFOM getting noticed is quite excellent.

Phoenix: Absolutely ho hum major winners, though the mention of Zodiac in their Top 10 is pretty cool, and FALLING SLOWLY. :D I'm sure that Stardust mention will also get a good response here. And Best Achievement in Stunts :lol:. That that Bourne is undeserving for anything.

Okay, first on the Phoenix winners:

Another one for Amy Ryan, she's certainly THE frontrunner for Best Supporting Actress. Looks to me like the only interesting acting category this year is gonna be Best Actress. I just hope it's not gonna be as predicting as it was back in 2005 and 2004 with all the favorites winning. I want surprises!

No Into the Wild or American Gangster in the Top 10. Both seem to be fading more and more.

On St. Louis:

How the hell does The Kite Runner still keep appearing on all the lists?!

On Best Actress: They've got six nominees, Cate Blanchett and Jodie Foster make it..but no Angelina Jolie and Keira Knightley?! I suppose that's rather good for Laura Linney. I think she's very much in the race for a nom still.

Good to see that someone remembers Talk to Me and Don Cheadle.

As for Gosling, I kept saying that he might, just might, sneak in as some kind of a dark horse contender. It just seemed like that kind of a weird role. Any chance he'll beat out Depp at the Globes? I doubt that, but he's certainly the only one who could manage that!

What the hell is Music Within?

There Will Be Blood misses a Screenplay nom!

I think it's safe to say that No Country's a sure frontrunner, and TWBB is its sure main competition at the moment. Atonement, Juno, Sweeney Todd, and Michael Clayton are all fighting strong, but none of them are getting the attention that these two films are.

I'm starting to get annoyed with Amy Ryan's popularity. I loved GBG, but she wasn't at all the best performance...she was just the excuse to get the story moving. Affleck and Harris were both quite a bit better than her IMO. I've heard such great things about Blanchett in I'm Not There that I can't imagine I'd find her performance close to as ineffective. Ryan deserved a nod, maybe, but a win? Not really.

And I'm really liking Gosling's performance with critics so far. I'm beginning to think he could pull off his second Oscar nod in two years. His performance in Half-Nelson wasn't fairing as well with critics as this is, was it? He's got to be the best under-thirty-male-actor in the industry, regardless...he's given back-to-back-to-back phenomenal performances in Half-Nelson, Fracture, and Lars. I'd be very happy to see his biting, unusual performance nominated. But DDL has the win locked up at this point.

I like how this race is shaping up. A lot of it makes sense, but history tells us that we can't ever be too sure about anything. Back in '05, Brokeback Mountain was getting as much support as NCFOM, wasn't it? At least, it was getting WAY more support than Crash. Anything can happen. And looking at the critical strength of the six films most likely to get nominated, I really think all of them could *potentially* [except for maybe Michael Clayton] be the winner.

P.T. Anderson winning two Director and one Picture award - that's great. TWBB also won Screenplay over No Country for Old Men and the in Score it semes to be the frontrunner currently, same for Best Actor, obviously.

And hey, at least Michael Clayton didn't make Austin's Top 10.

I'm wondering if Ellen Page can make a run at Best Actress. Christie's good in her film, but the performance doesn't really deliver WOWZAAA heights like some winners recently. And Page has been showing up a healthy amount of times.

There Will Be Blood wins several categories, but doesn't appear in their Top 10?! Hmm...

There Will Be Blood is the frontrunner for Actor, Cinematography and Score.

No Country for Old Man is the frontrunner for Picture/Director/Sup. Actor/Adapted Screenplay.

Juno is the frontrunner for Best Original Screenplay.

Best Sup. Actress starts getting less clear again as Blanchett's support's picking up. It'll be a two-horse race between her and Ryan.

Best Actress is still the most interesting category with Page, Cotillard and Christie having almost equal chances at this point with Christie having the veteran bonus.

Blanchett better win over Ryan. Ryan's performance was so damn mediocre compared to her buzz.

Nice to see Walk Hard grab another song win, and very very nice to see...Sunshine?!?!...make a Top Ten! TWBB is becoming a frontrunner in numerous categories; if only one of them was Best Picture.

That's what I was thinking. I think Page might've even passed Christie in total awards at this point.

And yes, Utah chose BBM two years ago, heh. They also honored Cuaron for Director last year, which makes it more of a shame that they didn't go wild this year.

I do think that, as it stands now, the winner is between Christie and Page, assuming the nominations turn out as expected. Which would be interesting. It's been a while since someone won a lead Oscar for a comedy, so...

If it comes down to Christie and Page, I think- barring an absolute explosion of hype for Juno a la LMS- the Oscar is Christie's to lose. I think they may consider Page to be too young, whereas Christie is a vet and is (supposedly) brilliant in a movie that has been loved by those who have seen it.

I really need to get around to renting Away from Her, La Vie en Rose, and A Mighty Heart. Right now, Best Actress is the only one of the acting categories where I've seriously seen none of the big contenders (unless we count Amy Adams, but I think her chances seem to be fading, sadly).
