Neville set up the trap, no doubt. The head zombie!? Are you guys kidding me??? Then why didn't the zombies attack Smith too? Or take him captive? Why just the dogs? It was Smith, why else would he be screaming at the mannequin delusionally like that?

Neville had just finished saying that the zombies had lost all human qualities and were willing to start killing themselves on purpose. There's no way they had the knowledge to set up a trap.

But they WERE willing to do almost anything to kill him. And even stupid creatures can set up traps to kill prey.

HA!
A review from Holleran...http://boxofficemojo.com/reviews/?id=2432&p=.htm

Quote:
Like an inferno of toxic materials, I Am Legend stinks up the joint with bad acting, directing and writing. On top of that—here comes the spoiler—they kill the only sympathetic being in a heinous scene that no civilized individual should ever endure.

The dog's name is Sam, an expressive and devoted German Shepherd. Any person who has ever stayed beside a dying dog should avoid this movie like bubonic plague. In a gratuitous scene that neither advances the plot nor develops character, Sam dies a slow, painful death. Watching the dog die in this manner does not enhance one's understanding of the Smith character's loss. The scene warrants singling out as a part of what's wrong.

Once in a while he makes sense, but other than those few moments, this guy has no idea how to critique a film. This is one of the most prime examples I've seen in a while. He really hates it, too, by the way.

Neville definitely did not set up the trap. It had no tarp and the lead zombie knew Smith would notice the out of place mannequin and investigate. What confuses me is the mannequin's head turning. I seriously thought that was a zombie with a sweater on trying to trick Neville. The more I think about certain parts of this movie, the more I love it.

I thought I was seeing things the first time I saw it, but then 2nd time that scene freaked me out even more. Neville was indeed starting to go crazy.

I started freaking out when the mannequins head moved. I would've BET MY HOUSE that it was the creature with the sweater on.

It had me truly convinced... and even when he got closer to it... I still thought it was a creature... only when he started shooting at it did I realize it wasn't one...

Why would Neville set up the trap? WHY? We have grounds to believe that he potentially could have done it: he's going insane. But what is the motivation behind it? Why would he leave during the night (it'd have to be, since he got back and started doing tests during the evening, and then the next day basically the first thing he did was spot Frank the mannequin, correct me if I'm wrong). Even if he's insane enough to set-up a trap like that for no reason, he is not insane enough to risk his life doing it.

I think it makes much more sense to think the monsters did it. They are devoid of humanity, not intelligence. I think they are intelligent enough to mimic a basic trap like the one Smith set-up, anyway.

It's more interesting if Neville set up the trap, but it makes more sense if the creatures did. Why would he make a trap where the prey just hangs there? He wanted creatures for testing, he didn't want to kill them. But then it brings up the question of how the creatures were able to set up the trap, if they were just bloodthirsty monsters.

I think it's more of a plot hole than an ambiguous plot element. It really doesn't make logical sense either way.

he did knock the other creature out once he caught it in the tarp. I think it was to show more that as time was going by Neville was getting sloppier and that his mind was slowly falling apart.

Yeah, but he did trap it in a tarp, so that it wouldn't be killed by the light. The trap he was caught in was wide open. I guess it adds an interesting layer of insanity to his character, but it wasn't really developed further and doesn't make much sense.

No way, there is no real passage of time in between the two traps, the movie itself took place over the course of a week, if that. The day he caught the girl creature was the same day he almost talked to the girl in the video store. The very next day, he went to the store and the "The other day I promised my friend I would say hello." The creature saw Smith do it, and manipulated it. The 2nd day he caught the creature. It pissed the head creature off, the next day they tricked Neville. There was no tarp and it only raised him about 5 feet in the air. It would be a completely useless trap for Neville to set. And I stand by. If the Head creature was smart enough to chain up his dogs and know when to release them, they could have set up the trap.

While it would add layers to the Neville I can't see a way in which he set about a trap for himself. Personally I think it's the fact that he has been alone for so long, that he can't imagine that the male creature would go out into the sun for a futile attempt to save the girl. To him, he thinks the creature is just dumb enough to try to catch him in the sunlight.

This was a dissapointment, a very short uneven mediocre film.
Will Smith's worst acting since Wild wild west. The set design was eyepopping but this film had no heart and i didnt care for Smith's character or the 2 other ones introduced later in the film, though the dog was cute.

There is no other indication that Neville is going crazy. Nothing substantial. He sees the head move on the mannequin, but I'm sure everyone here has thought they've seen something move when it actually didn't. It's a simple trick of the mind. Everything else he has done was well within rational and sane antics. There is no foundation to believe Neville did it outside of speculation, no development, and no evidence.

Whereas to think that the monsters did it, there is a clear foundation (they saw him set a similar trap earlier in the movie), rationale (they are semi-intelligent creatures, able to formulate plans of breaking into Neville's house), and evidence (there were plenty of monsters waiting for him when he had awoken).

How, by ferry?

Speaking of which, Neville should have made his home on a ship... unless the infected could swim.

It really makes you wonder what happened in the few months after the outbreak. Neville probably fortified the house as the surviving immune were slowly wiped out. What was it like during day (and night) in those days?
