So this is probably my most-anticipated movie of the rest of the year. The broadway version was ok, but it nearly doubled my anticipation for the film version. I am really looking forward to what Helena Bonham Carter will do...the actress in the musical was amazing.

Peter Travers at Rolling Stone gushes:

Quote:
Burton is a true visionary, and with the help of cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, costume whiz Colleen Atwood and production designer Dante Ferretti he sets a new gold standard for bringing a stage musical to the screen.

Quote:
Depp erases the line between singing and acting, fusing them into something that keeps the movie blazing. Oscar, take note. This Sweeney is a bloody wonder, intimate and epic, horrific and heart-rending as it flies on the wings of Sondheim's most thunderously exciting score.

Quote:
Covered in blood, Sweeney is finally engulfed by his emotions, and Depp finds the character's grieving heart. It's a staggering moment in a spellbinder of breathtaking beauty and terror.

the RT reviews are good, but being a musical makes winning BP very hard, especially being a musical as strange as this, and I think to have a shot at winning BP, it would need to up its avg [which is currently an 8/10] to an 8.3 or higher. It may sound picky, but it faces such strong competition that winning would NOT be easy for it.

Yes, it is.

Travers would deem your Great Aunt Mertha's home video of her cat's using the littler box a "spellbinder that haunts your dreams and makes you laugh till it hurts!"

He pretty much wrote that Sweeney Todd review with his placement on the movie's DVD cover art his only concern.

The academy has no problem embracing musicals

Extremely gory and dark musicals, they do.

The competition is also bloody, but I can't say Sweeney will win at this point. I think if they pussy out from No Country and There Will Be Blood, they'd be more likely to give it to... gasp... Michael Clayton. Or Atonement of course.

as I've said, the RT is great, but to be a certain BP nom, I think 90% or higher would've been better. It's such a strange film [at least, I expect nothing less from Burton] that it could never be a mortal lock for something like a BP nom in a competitive year like this.

I'm out. Sorry, but I've got a feeling that No Country won't be able to be stopped.

I'm not even sure about its BP nom. Juno looks stronger. But I'd love to see some recognition for Burton. Hopefully it will win the GG.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

No, not about the movies content, but rather about it's slim chance of winning an Oscar®...

Loyal what will you say if, hypothetically, it doesn't get a DGA nom?

do you have ® on your keyboard? I've noticed you tend to use it quite often.

It's an homage/parody of how much it's used/emphasized in Academy Awards material/promos, with a little help from out friend the option key...

I think it'll miss either DGA or PGA, but get a nom at one of them.

Post Re: Sweeney Todd Will Win Best Picture
Then again, in recent years, DGA has proven to be a bit more of a predictor than PGA for BP nominees. Not last year, but the years before for sure.

Movies that got PGA noms, but no DGA noms:

Walk the Line
The Incredibles
The Last Samurai
Cold Mountain
Adaptation
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Road to Perdition
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Shrek
Billy Elliot

In the same time frame, movies that got no PGA noms, but DGA noms:

Traffic
Memento
Black Hawk Down
The Hours
The Pianist
Lost in Translation
Ray
Munich

So, it boiled down in recent years to the following:

A PGA nom without a DGA nom - not a single one of them got a BP nom at the Oscars
A DGA nom without a PGA nom - 6 out of 8 got BP noms at the Oscars, 7 got BD noms (Black Hawk Down got BD, not BP).

Apparently, there's a better chance to get a BP nom if you'r enot nominated for either DGA or PGA (see In the Bedroom, Gosford Park...) than if it's a PGA nom only :P

Um, no, Loyal, Moulin Rouge, Dreamgirls and Chicago were ALL nominated for PGA and DGA.

Only one of them got BP/BD noms at the Oscars, another got a BP nom (though that BD snub was insane) and the third one got zilch.

hmm, at this point, I don't think so. The box office is good, but honestly, I was thinking that it would need $150m or higher to have a solid shot at winning. It looks headed for a bit over $100m. That mixed in with good, not great, reviews [at least, in comparison to its competition], adds in with the Academy's refusal to choose weird movies to give this a very minimal shot. I think it'll be nominated, though, and that would make Burton's first nomination since...wait...ever?! I think BP/BD noms along with Actor, Screenplay, and a buncha techs would be more than good enough for this film.
