No HUGE snubs, though, right? Everything seems about right. I'll give them a pass for The Great Debaters.

Glad to see CWW still in the mix.

Post Re: Golden Globe Nominations
It always bugs me that the Globes have two picture categories but only one category for director and screenplay. It's like they want to acknowledge as many films as they can without also acknowledging those who made the film.

That said, I'm relatively happy with these nominations. Lots of No Country + Sweeney love, and no real surprises, outside of that bizarre Great Debaters showing. Seriously, it makes the dramatic picture category look like a joke.

All that's missing is a Paris Hilton nom.
Oh well, maybe next year HFPA.

I finish my college applications last night. I go to my last day of work today. What could possibly make me feel awful? The fuckin' HFPA, that's who. Of course there's no reason they would nominate Into the Wild or Once for anything, they hate anything where large sums of money aren't visibly onscreen. Halbrook though is just  . All this love for Atonement and Charlie Wilson's War just make me think that this could be another 1999, where after such great, great films came out, the nominations were the most bland, sippy cup shit on the market. Seriously, does anyone hold The Cider House Rules or even The Sixth Sense in any regard anymore?

To be fair to Into the Wild, in terms of indicators BFCA >>> Globes. The Globes have been off the wall the last couple years. Crash got nominated for zilch, Babel won best Drama, MDB didn't make a splash, Dreamgirls and Walk the Line dominated then got their butts kicked at Oscar. The acting categories are always a bit funny too.

Great boost for Juno. It could feasibly win 2 awards with Page and Cody winning (I think Cody is almost a sure thing). I hope Page wins though and I'd love to see the movie itself win too.

Can't believe Clooney got nominated for Michael Clayton. He wasn't very good in it.

I was hoping for Ben Affleck to get a Best Director nomination but it didn't happen.

Atonement or No Country will win BP Drama.

The Coen Bros. will win Best Director.

The Great Debaters getting nominated is a joke. It looks like the same crap we've seen a hundred times before.

Why are there 7 BP drama nominations and why is one of them The Great Debaters?

I'm really disappointed.

But I think the Globes are starting to become more and more relevant with every year.

And how about TV? Zilch for Lost?? Are you freakin kidding me?

Exactly what I've been expecting. It's simply by far not the kind of a film the HFPA would go for.

The Great Debaters was really the stupidest throw in for a nomination, considering the film received NO other nominations and it created a stretched category to 7 nominees for Best Picture Drama. I mean, stretching the traditional 5 nominees per category to 6 is one thing, but 7 films is moronic. You're supposed to make a decision and nominate the very best. So silly.

Peace,

Couldn't agree more. 7 nominees is just silly.

Post Re: Golden Globe Nominations
Okay, so my general comments:

- 7 BP nominees in drama, 12 overall is pretty ridiculous especially when you've got only FIVE BD nominees. Moronic.

- Which brings me to the next point - how the hell did P.T. Anderson miss a Directing nom for There Will Be Blood. I bet he ended up as #6 or something because of the insanely crowded category.

- I KNEW American Gangster would get a big boost here and it did. I only expected a directing nom for it, a BP nom helps it very much too. I am actually a bit surprised Crowe wasn't nominated as well for it. I think AG is still at least a legit contender for a BP OR a BD nom at the Osracs. Won't get both, though, definitely not.

- The Diving Bell and the Butterfly got soem great boost too, though for such an acting-heavy film, there are no acting noms, I'm surprised.

- Cate Blanchett and Jodie Foster getting noms for the BA Drama category just shows how weak it is

- Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) is a huge surprise, though. Nikki Blonsky over Linney and Russell? The hell?! They really liked Hairspray, giving it two acting noms.

- Charlie Wilson's War got some real love as well, though the absence of a directing nom is not good. But three acting noms is quite great, one of them should appear at the Oscars and I think its Screenplay is pretty much a lock for a nom.

- Bardem, Wilkinson, Affleck and Hoffman seem to be locks for the Best Sup. Actor noms, the 5th spot is up in the air between Travolta, Halbrook and von Sydow.

- The Best Picture Musical/Comedy will be a tight race between Juno, Sweeney Todd and Hairspray, IMO. I think all have a legit chance with the latter two having two acting noms and Juno a Screenplay nom, while ST has a directing nom.

Seriously, no Picture nod for Into the Wild AND a nomination for John Travolta? :disgust:

At least they kind of made up for it with Eastern Promises getting a Picture nod.

I'm sorry that I was bothered by the freaking Golden Globes, when one spends as much time watching the Oscar race it can be hard to step back and realize how truly vain it can all be. That said I'm certainly not sorry I don't have the same soft spot for predictable and bland Oscar bait.
