 Battlefield Earth Battlefield Earth Quote: Battlefield Earth is a 2000 American film adaptation of the novel of the same name by L. Ron Hubbard. Directed by Roger Christian, the film stars John Travolta, Forest Whitaker and Barry Pepper. It depicts an Earth that has been under the rule of the alien Psychlos for 1,000 years and tells the story of the rebellion that develops when the Psychlos attempt to use the surviving humans as gold miners.
Travolta, a long-time Scientologist, had sought for many years to make a film of the novel by Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. He was unable to obtain funding from any major studio due to concerns about the film's script, prospects, and connections with Scientology. The project was eventually taken on by an independent production company, Franchise Pictures, which specialized in rescuing stars' stalled pet projects. Travolta signed on as a co-producer and contributed millions of dollars of his own money to the production, which was largely funded by a German film distribution company. Franchise Pictures was later sued by its investors and was bankrupted after it emerged that it had fraudulently overstated the film's budget by $31 million.
Battlefield Earth was released on May 12, 2000. The film was a major commercial failure and critical flop and has been widely dismissed as one of the worst films ever made. Reviewers universally panned the film, criticizing virtually every aspect of the production. Audiences were reported to have ridiculed early screenings and stayed away from the film after its opening weekend. This resulted in Battlefield Earth failing to recoup its costs. Travolta originally envisioned the film as the first of two adapted from the book, as the screenplay only covered the first half of the novel. The film's poor box office performance meant that the planned sequel would not be made.

Besides Travolta looking like a spaceman gone wrong, it was just bad....i lost interest...several times, i cant even remember it that well, so, i guess im one of the lucky ones, hehe.

I remember watching it once. I remember Travolta blew up some cows legs, they were going up these stairs with a weird camera angle, and I remember just a little bit more. But from what I remember me hating it I give it an...

Just realized that I never wrote up my (obvious) thoughts on this one. It is hard to imagine that a movie as bad as this one can even exist and could have ever been made. There is not a single redeeming factor about it. It is not even "so bad that it's funny". Not at all. This movie isn't campy, it isn't unintentionally funny. It is boring beyond belief, it is badly acted, the storyline is ridiculous and what on earth did they invest $70+ million budget in?! These visual effects look almost as taken out of a modern Ed Wood film. Not a single "action scene" (which is a daring expression here) is impressive. Barry Pepper should have been shot dead after this movie. Same for the director. Roger Christian should never be allowed to even direct a hot dog commercial. Actually, all the members of this movie (except for Travolta who I pity despite him being the one to get this pile of crap started) should never be let near a film set again. In my entire life, after seeing way over 2,000 movies this is the very worst I have ever encountered and is up with only about 5-6 other movies I ever gave an F to.

This truly lives up to its bad reputation. A boring premise, horrible acting and mediocre special effects make this a filmed disaster on every level.

Travolta's worst film HANDS DOWN  , It could rival Kung Pow for worst film of the Thousands  . Insted of being Intolerable like Kung Pow it was Dreadfully Boring. Battlefield Earth definitely makes my top 10 worst films of all time

Re: Battlefield Earth I have no problem saying I love the novel, it was cheesy and simple yes but it was damn good sci-fi pulp drama to boot.
But this thing.................................there isn't word invented yet to describe the utterly wrenched raping effect this has on the brain. Travolta chews so much scenery you'd swear he was the human manifestation of Dutch Elm Disease while Piper should be forever banned from making another film after this.
To make matters even worse the director decided to film every shot in this horrible washed out tone that had me thinking he'd used film stock from the school of Soviet propaganda reels and then to add insult to injury everything is filmed at an angle meaning if you watch the whole movie you'll come out at the end with severe spinal damage.
And then there is the Harrier Jump Jets that are still in working order after 1000 years!! Ugh what a waste cause this could have been diverting fun if done right.

The part that always got me was when he shot the cows legs off. 1. Cows are domesticated animals that would never have survived in the wild for 1000 years 2. When the legs fly off they look like sticks of rigid wood!! And yes I'm completely clueless where the money went, maybe they had to rebuild the set after every Travolta chewing scene?

I remember that even after the movie's embarassing box-office and terrible reviews, Travolta was still talking about two (!) possible sequels to wrap up the story! :-/
