Ratatouille for Best Picture nom club
Now, it has maybe a 3% shot at it, if that, but fuck, it deserves it. Who's in?

Re: Ratatouille for Best Picture nom club
The angle Disney is going out with the "Best Reviewed Film of the Year...Around the World" Tagline is seriously brill, probably one of the very best to emerge this season so far. Shame it won't get it to the big prize.

I'd give my left testicle to see a BP nom, it's not going to happen though. I love that they're trying.

Re: Ratatouille for Best Picture nom club
I think the Academy specifically created the Best Animated Feature category to prevent these films from taking away the glory of "real" movies. In some ways, it makes perfect sense that the best-reviewed film of the year would at least get a nomination, but it's sadly not gonna happen.
It should easily win Best Animated Feature though. I mean, really, what comes close?

Re: Ratatouille for Best Picture nom club
I think it comes back to the popular (mis)conception that animation is a genre, not just a medium. As Groucho said while the Best Animated Feature award exists it'll be practically impossible for an animated film to get in BP.

Re: Ratatouille for Best Picture nom club
Oh, it absolutly sucks.
My film background is in writing about animation, having started and edited Animato magazine for many years. And that was one thing I was always pushing for: When analyzing a good film, you ask: Is it well directed? Well written? Well acted? and so on... Why does "Is it live action" have anything to do with whether a film is good or not?
So shouldn't Best Picture be truly be an award for whatever film was best that year? So what if it was animated, or in a foreign language, or even a documentary?
I was still editing Animato when Beauty and the Beast came out and the issue that was big was simple: How could it be nominated for Best Picture but not Best Director? More than any live action film, the animation director controls his film right down to each individual frame. The film didn't animate itself!

It should easily win Best Animated Feature though. I mean, really, what comes close? Persepolis is 100% on RT with 19 reviews in so far. They say it's even better than the graphic novels, which were really something on their own terms. If Ratatouille isn't nominated for Best Picture I'm sure it'll win Best Animated Picture. But, and this is a huge but, were it to theoretically get a Best Picture nomination, I think that many would feel that's reward enough and might vote for Persepolis instead. Even then it'd be a surprise, but were this last year I do think it'd have a strong chance of winning.

When it comes down to it, it's just plain discrimination against animation keeping it from getting a shot at the big dance. Sad, but true.

I'm hoping some critics are going to give this end-of-the-year love...
