Re: The Official Sweeney Todd Will Win Best Picture Thread
Don't forget Helena Bonham Carter for Best Supporting Actress. I read that she is a standout and could be looking at a supporting nomination for her performance.
I don't think the movie will win Best Picture, but I'd be very happy if it did. I think the film will score big in nominations at the Oscars, so in that respect, I am in and support it.
Peace, Mike

As you all know, I'm a bigtime musical fanboy - - but I dunno - - I gotta bad, bad feelin' about Sweeney Todd, (though I sure hope I'm wrong!)...

I think, as some of he first reaction have noted, it's going to be way too bloody too win. Burton can maybe split with Director. Maayyyyyybe.

Re: The Official Sweeney Todd Will Win Best Picture Thread
In. It's a bit risky of a pick, but here's why I think it could win:
1.) It's poised to do pretty well at the box office. Johnny Depp seems to be a pretty good draw right now.
2.) Preordained contender status will give the film extra visibility. Though that can turn out to be a double-edged sword (see last year's Dreamgirls), it will at least really get voters interested in going out of their way to see the film.
3.) If the early word about Depp's performance is spot-on, this could be as much an actors' movie as it is anything else. This could really boost it.
4.) Musical Revival. It didn't happen last year with Dreamgirls. Will this be the year it happens in the Best Picture category?
5.) Tim Burton being "due." I can't really explain that sentiment other than that he's a generally respected, well-known director who has never been nominated, let alone won.
6.) This will be a monster in the techs. If it plays as well with the acting, directing, and writing branches (directing is iffy as far as support goes, and writing is crucial to this movie being a contender to win Picture), it's going to have a lot of support.
Yes, it has its detractors, but at this point in time, I think it has a lot going for it, so I'll live dangerously and (currently) predict a win.

Also, 7) Right now Blood, Atonement, and No Country are looking at the low end of BP winning grosses. 50 mil+ is a success for all 3. Sweeney Todd could be 120+ like The Departed.

Hmm I found a couple torrents of this on the net
I'm wary, because this is the kind of movie you see in theatres. I'll download just to see if it's real though.

Even if I'm campaigning for the Rat, I wish Burton wins Best Director with this. He directed too many of my childhood favorites...

Re: The Official Sweeney Todd Will Win Best Picture Thread
Apparently, her role has been lessened from what it was in the play, so it's believed that she could conceivably go supporting. That's where she's got a better shot at a nod, I think.

I'm not convinced this will win, but I find it remarkable that people still seem to think the Academy doesn't have a stomach for violence. If anything, recent history shows that sometimes they like it... A lot.

It will be this or Atonement, IMO.
But if the 20 minutes of footage I saw earlier in the month is any indication, this is going to be the film to beat. I still can't get over how AMAZING those sequences were.

Re: The Official Sweeney Todd Will Win Best Picture Thread
If you go to the official site you can hear a good chunk of the music from the film, in particular what sounds like Little Priest in its entirety. From this evidence, Depp's actually a very good singer, and Bonham Carter can carry a tune, if not particularly well or with any flare to speak of.

Can I join this club while still being a member of the Atonement club? I swear, I'm 50/50 on both. I'm confident they will be two A+ films for me personally though.
