Creepy. So you're Philip Seymour Hoffman?

RT-MC-WATCH:

RT-WATCH

90% (7.8/10) with 82 reviews in (8 rotten)
COTC 94% (8.1/10)

MC-WATCH

85/100 with 32 reviews in - ten 100's - which is more than any other film got this year, except for NCFOM and Ratatouille.

I'm working on new predictions, but right now I have this in Director, S. Actress (Tomei) and Screenplay, while contemplating S. Actor (Finney).

What about Hoffman? The Actor category is very crowded, but if he has a standout performance..

He has a REALLY busy year right now, with Charlie Wilson's War in Supporting and The Savages also in Lead. He certainly has a shot, though I need to contemplate the category a little more before deciding whether or not he makes it. At the least I think he's in for Charlie Wilson's War.

I don't think he'll get in for Lead. He can but I see it as unlikely. The performance was great but it nowhere near his work in Capote.

Is this ever going wider? It's been playing here for a few weeks but nothing seems to be happening with it...

To those that have seen this - is it must see?

No but it is pretty great. Performances really good. Keeps you interested all throughout.

At the box office it's up to $2.2 million after 4 weeks. It expands to 200+ theaters Wednesday, and could hit $1 million next weekend. If it keeps a decent box office pace (About $2,500-3,500 PTA), it could get a great boost in the Big Race...

This probably will be one of the best films of the year when all is said and done, but it's just not getting enough support to become a heavy Oscar contender. The best it could get are Best Actor nom for Hoffman and Best Adapted Screenplay. And I'm not sure on either one with all the competition in those categories.

I think Lumet could also sneak in as a Directing nominee, but other than that, you nailed it. The biggest problem is the distributor (Think Film, I believe). If this had a somewhat larger studio behind it, I think it could stir up better business, mount a better campaign, and push hard for a Picture nod.

But the problem with Hoffman is over what movie to mark his name for. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead? The Savages? Charlie Wilson's War?

he was easily worthy of a nomination in "The Savages," although it may get looked over as an everyman role. If "Charlie Wilson's War" is good enough to get some big nominations, I'm sure he'll be pushed in Supporting, which wouldn't have a huge impact on his two leads. His role in BTDKYD looks really juicy, but I'd have to see it before saying it's better than that of "The Savages," which would be very hard to top.

I just saw it and thought it was great - but probably not Oscar worthy. The ending is big and intense, and it is actually very satisfying in a way, but it really only half works. If you've seen it, you'll know probably know what I'm talking about.

I think Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Albert Finney, though, are Oscar worthy, at least from among the small amount of good male performances I've seen this year (though, admittedly, I haven't seen a ton of films this year to begin with). The screenplay will also likely place in my top five at the year's end.

I'm a little confused as to how the Marisa Tomei buzz got started, though. She's nothing great here.

But it's a great film that more people should see. Anyone else here seen it besides Raffi?

I guess people are just going by the fact that she's a past winner in a fairly critically acclaimed film in a role she has gotten a lot of attention for. I haven't heard people discuss someone's nude scenes in a movie so much since the days of Halle Berry and Swordfish.

I saw it this weekend and thought it was great. Not as impactful as some other big oscar films, but very powerful. I thought Hoffman was freaking unbelievably spectacular. Personally, i think it is the performance of the year. Tomei's hooters, not her performance, should be up for the best supporting/best supported (She hasn't aged at all and is still drop dead gorgeous!!!)
Hopefully this gets some recognition come Oscar time.

Missing the Ensemble nom at the SAG and not showing many critics awards appearances...looks pretty dead. A Screenplay nom is its best chance right now.

It really deserved that ensemble nod that it didn't get. Hoffman, Hawke, and Finney were all absolutely fantastic in it.

It's too bad, as it's one of the best movies I've seen so far this year, but the thing that works against the movie itself is that almost all of the characters are totally despicable. There's no "hero" to be found anywhere, and every character who can't be really hated isn't around for the movie's conclusion. I really hope it can still at least pull a screenplay nod.
