 Re: The Contenders III
Did the release date for The Savages change or something?
It's listed as Nov 30 (limited) on Rotten Tomatoes. That's really good, it stood almost no chance in late December.

 Re: The Contenders III
Gone Baby Gone was good enough to deserve a nom, but with the similarly-located The Departed winning just a year ago, the very similarly-themed Mystic River getting nominated a few years earlier, and with similarly-charactered American Gangster making more in three days than this film's gonna make in its entire run, even with slightly weaker reviews, I can understand why this likely will miss out on a BP nom. Hopefully both of the Afflecks and Amy Ryan [or at least a variation of the three] can pick up nominations.

I don't know if this was ever posted, but Youth Without Youth bombed with Variety and Hollywood Reporter and is 2 fresh 4 rotten overall on RT. It was a longshot for a while anyways.

Coppola hadn't made a film in ten years. He's old. he may be a terrific director, at least historically speaking, but not everyone can crank out their best movies at the age Eastwood's been doing it at.

Or at least with a solid 2nd unti director in tow (staring squarely at Eastwood).have you seen any Eastwood Westerns? I wouldn't recommend that

Diving Bell and the Butterfly is making a run for the most number of 100s at MC this year: 5 100s out of 11 reviews. Unlikely to catch Ratatourille and NCFOM, but one of the best reviewed films of the year for sure.

Roger Friedman spooged over it too. So did David Poland. Kris Tapley seems to have not cared for it very much. None of this was unexpected.
The verdict? None. Need more reviews!

And Jeff Wells is really, really, really, really onboard the Sweeney train.Awesome! This was unexpected. He'd been looking forward to panning it for a year now. Jeff Wells wrote: Sweeney Todd is his best film since...Beetlejuice? Makes your heart sing, don't it?

As a fan of the film, I gotta admit even I am surprised b the four 100s it received. Also, I believe Jonathan Rosembaum placed it in his Top 10 of 2005. As for the actual race, Diving Bell is now seven for sixteen in 100s, upping its average to 92. Could this really become a last-minute Best Picture contender?

 Re: The Contenders III
Yeah, CatCF was definitely a mixed bag when it came to reviews; yeah, I saw some good ones, but for every good one, there was a bad one.
My anticipation for Sweeney has doubled now, especially with Tom O'Neil's review. In the past, he's been quite disparaging toward Johnny Depp, but he seems to have done a 180 because of Sweeney Todd.

BP is still a long long shot, but Julian Schnabel is certainly creeping up on my BD list. He had Before Night Falls, so not a totally unknown.

 Re: The Contenders III
Diving Bell seems much more likely to top makeshift's list than make headway at the Academy. But xia's right, the director, acting, technicals are strong possibilities.

And Kris Tapley finally weighs in on Sweeney Todd. 2.5 stars, but he still has some praises to be sung.

 Re: The Contenders III
I've never been less excited for a new Burton film than I've been for Sweeney Todd. And even with these glowing reviews, I can't get myself really pumped for it. I'm certainly more intrigued by it now, but there's just something... not there for me. Hopefully this Best Film of the Year/Burton's Masterpiece rings true for me when I finally get to see it.
Despite this though, I'm still backing it for Oscar glory. It's probably Burton's best shot yet at winning an Oscar. And if the other nominees turn out to be the bleak and violent Atonement, There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men... The excessive amount of blood-letting shouldn't pose a problem for it in the Best Picture race.
