Only a week after writing off Resnais films for good, too (or something similar).

Believe me, nobody's more shocked than I am.

Hey, I just turned 22! Lots of work to be done. I still find great movies every day. We've got 90 years of 'em to sort through. It's exciting!

Wow, big gap between 5 and 6. That's some concentrated support at the top.

That top 15 is about as good as it gets. I'm also glad Donner made the list.

So does 1941, his Twilight Zone The Movie entry (no joke, one of the worst things I've ever seen), The Color Purple, Always, Hook, Schindler's List, Amistad, Saving Private Ryan and The Terminal.

Not to mention War of the Worlds, Catch Me if You Can (which should have been a slam dunk), Munich, AI...

Heh, I actually thought his Twilight Zone entry was the worst as well, even though I first watched that film when I was pretty young and right in the middle of my Spielberg education. Landis' segment is decent, Dante's is pretty creepy, and Miller's is downright terrifying, but Spielberg's is hopelessly sappy. But my favourite bit is still the prologue, especially when it comes full circle by the end.

AI I have to adamantly disagree with. I think it is close to being his masterpiece.

Both War of the Worlds and Munich have moments that are some of the best stuff he has ever done, but never really amount to what they should be. I wouldn't call them bad, though.

Catch Me if You Can is definitely light, but it is passable Hollywood entertainment.

I wouldn't call any of his films that I've seen (save for The Lost World) bad, but they're certainly all over the place. And Saving Private Ryan, for all its schmaltz, is still an incredibly visceral experience.

I've always thought Spielberg was consistent in one thing -- his frustrating mediocrity.

There are moments in nearly all of his films that truly display the genius the man is capable of. He generally finds some way to fuck it up by the end, though.

The only time I've really thought his total lack of tonal control and structure worked was with AI. The final twenty minutes of that film are absolutely devastating.

Well, after rewatching AI, I certainly liked it a lot more than I did the first time, but I still don't think I fully grasp everything it's going for. And I never realized, until reading on the film after watching it, that those 'aliens' are actually evolved robots. That blew my mind.

Spielberg films always fall in the B+ and B range for me, it's kind of eerie actually. Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, Raiders, Jurassic Park, Munich, War of the Worlds, literally all B+ and Bs. The only Spielberg film I really love is E.T.

No! Don't! :P

Temple of Doom is one film that always baffles me. It's clearly the black sheep of the Indiana Jones family, and not just because it's dark (besides, why would I hate a film for being dark? :P). It's really poorly acted, needlessly gross, and over-the-top silly. More than just crazed-look-on-Nazi's-face-as-tank-goes-over-the-edge silly in Last Crusade. I still give it a B-, because it's loads of fun (especially the mine cart chase) and Ford is as iconic as ever, but I'll never understand the love for it.
