 Indie Rock!
A broad genre that can appear overwhelming at first, many of the bands in this category can ENRICH your life with an interesting and pop-ish sound. It'll give you faith in the fate of music
I recommend a couple: The Shins, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Death Cab for Cutie, Hot Hot Heat, Longwave, Interpol, The Datsuns, The Mars Volta/At the Drive In, Modest Mouse, and others.
I've compiled a bunch of links to legal downloads just so you can get started!
The Shins - So Says I
The Shins - Know Your Onion!
The Shins - Kissing the Lipless
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Miles Away
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Machine
Death Cab for Cutie - Title and Registration
Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

Good list, torri. You've got some of my favorite bands of all time up there. Anything you download from those bands is legal, though, cause they're not part of the RIAA and they endorse file sharing. So, if anyone here likes those sample tracks, go get yourself a whole album or three.
Anywho, some other good indie stuff:
The Faint - I Disappear
Bright Eyes - Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh
Bright Eyes - A Line Allows Progress, A Circle Does not
Death Cab For Cutie - A Movie Script Ending
Damien Rice - The Blower's Daughter
The Postal Service - Such Great Heights

Well...if it WAS free. If none of them are endorsed by the RIAA, though, you'd think they'd be more eager to put songs on their websites.
The Postal Service is great, but it strikes me as more Zero 7-ish than actual rock.
I've never heard of Bright Eyes or The Faint; The two Bright Eyes songs were good. The Faint song was mediocre - a little too 80ish for me, though, the beat's cool.

Yeah, Bright Eyes are really, really good. I'll have a couple of their songs on my top 100 list.
The Faint are indeed 80ish sounding. I like it alot, though. Check out the song In Concert from their album Blank Wave Arcade. It's better than I Disappear.
The Postal Service isin't rock, but it's definitely indie.

Yesh! We're expanding a bit. I dunno any of those bands. You'll notice that my list is mainstream for indie artists. Everyone knows "Float On" and most have heard "Bandages" or "Maps" because of MTV2 (which I don't watch, but I heard that these were two of the most played videos...).

I don't know if any of you guys do DC++, but if you do there's a great hub called ind!ous indie life that you should check out. They autoban people sharing anything RIAA, so it's completely safe, and of course it's full of great music.
Go here to see if the stuff you share is RIAA free.

Sorry
AHMED HAS NO LINKS FOR THOSE BANDS
However he has some recommendations:
Dirtbombs: Don't Break My Heart, Sun Is Shining
Guided By Voices: I Am A Scientist, Girls Of Wild Strawberries

I've been in there...on your recommendation (back at BOM). I wasn't auto-banned, but perhaps I wasn't sharing...
I know I was sharing something (I had to...I don't have the most amount of space so I had to get every file in there from every folder to meet the 2 GB req, lol) that wasn't RIAA free. Perhaps I'll put a movie or two in a folder just so I can step in without getting autobanned...

You guys should also check out Arcade Fire, if you haven't. Go here and click on their name on the left side. Then click on Media and stream Rebellion (Lies). Amazing, amazing song.

Whoo hoo, thanks for the mp3s. \:D/ After seeing Garden State I was searching for some of The Shins other stuff. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are great, I have their EP/Fever To Tell albums. I've also gotten into Mars Volta and Modest Mouse.

Arcade Fire are brilliant!
ONE AHMED HEARD THEIR TUNES ABOUT 2 MONTHS BACK
They remind of 80s powerhouses like echo and the bunnymen, U2
Awesomely atmospheric
Anyone here heard of Bloc Party?

torri - I saw you jump on and get kicked. I'm talking to one of the OP's right now. Your file sharing is coming up as fake because your files are still hashing. I need your IP address so you can get unbanned.

heh.
Half the stuff I have is all illegal...to share (Frankly, most of its legal on my computer, since I've bought or copied from purchased cds the majority of the things...)
Is that "laur" guy an op? Cuz he's the guy who downloaded my list; I downloaded his in return, and I found a bunch of Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Coldplay, etc.
Since you're a mod, just check my IP in any post I've made in the Over Seas forum.

An OP has RIAA stuff. Too funny.
Anywho, I gave them your IP, so you should be good to go pretty soon.

Honestly, just as long as you don't share anything in the current top 40, they wont kick you. It's mainly just a security measure.
Alright. You're good to reconnect. If you want to look through my crap, im paintyourmirror.

Seemed to work. The same mod immediately greeted me by downloading the list
I thought there was a 2 GB share limit. So, now, all I have is a measly collection of Atmosphere, Azul Azul, Dispatch, Eva Cassidy, Hot Hot Heat, Mars Volta, Shins, Strike Anywhere, Ryan Adams, and some other bands. Two movies covered a lotta the amount I'm sharing...
Thanks for going through the trouble ...I'll look through your "extensive" library (I'm expecting...) in a couple minutes...

No problem. I think the list download thing is an automatic thing. I have a lot of Bright Eyes if you can get into my share.
