The most underrated movies of 2004
What films in 2004 did you feel either received undeserved poor buzz, or were just brushed aside?
My votes go to two December films, Closer and Spanglish. I thought both of these movies were excellent, yet Closer is struggling to reach $30M and Spanglish looks like it will top out at $50M. Both of them deserve to be seen by a wider audience.

Closer gets my vote. Not just Box Office wise, but also critical praise wise. It deserves a lot more than what it's getting.

The Terminal.
Very good movie. For whatever reason got a poor reception (by Spielberg and Hanks standards).

I don't think Closer is underrated. I liked it a lot, but I can see why some didn't. With that said, maybe the few that didn't like it are expressing themselves better and encouraging others to wait until dvd/video. The legs should've been better and Columbia should've expanded it (or at least tried to). The way they released it ended up killing any chance at crossing $50m.
BTW, both your picks share another thing in common. Both are Sony/Columbia releases
I'm inclined to pick Valentin. Valentin left theatres within 5-6 weeks and was slammed (well, not really, but it was in terms of a foreign film) by critics simply because the story had been done before. It's extremely underrated; ask andaroo!
I'd say The Motorcycle Diaries as well, but that's done VERY well for a Spanish film, even though Focus could have gotten another $15m out of it. The comments on it glamorizing Che were not true, though.

I just watched this movie like last week and was totally surprised by it! It was such a great movie and I absolutely loved it.

Collateral was also under-rated!

Why do you consider it underrated? It made over $100 million at the box office and looks to get at least 1 Oscar nomination, not to mention the huge critical support it received.

Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle.
It wasn't a dumb teen movie, it was a constantly funny surprize comedy. It underperformed at the Box Office.

You know what movie im going to say, Yes THAT one. It didn't do as well as it should have and was the sweetest chickflick i think ive ever seen.
Also : White Chicks -man people hated that film in the US, but in the UK the reaction was awesome, i found it very funny if not of ramshackle make and not exaclty avoiding sterotypical sendoffs.
And The Stepford Wives was not that bad at all, i found it quite enjoyable actually. Hero i had hoped to gross more, but not reaslitically i guess.
The Village - people made this out to be horrific. Sure it wasnt scary, and the lines were corny more than once, but it was still well made, lavishly shot and had some great performances as well as an interesting twist. A romantic drama with a layer of thrills.

Hmm... probably Eurotrip and The Girl Next Door. It turns out teen comedies still can be funny.

Closer
Flight of the Phoenix
The Girl Next Door
Ladder 49
Torque (for at least being a comedy anyways)
I Heart Huckabees
Ugh, not Two Brothers. That's got to be one of the worst conceived kids movies ever. It's just constant scenes of tiger cubs getting hurt or yelled at. All the kids at the movie were having a wretched time, including my 8 and 6 year old cousins.

I hated that movie with a passion. I laughed all of twice maybe? My grade was a D+ but I'm not even sure it deserved that.

I've not seen Closer, might try to catch it before it leaves theaters, but I thought Spanglish was terrible. Mainly due to Tea Leonis extremely whiney and annoying performance.

By far...New York Minute. Terrific plot, acting, cinematography, and directing all rolled up into one package.
I was scanning IMDB to find the funniest line from this movie as there are soooo many, but I think this just might be the funniest one in any film ever....
