Post Prince Harry wears Nazi Uniform
I believe that he seriously has some issues.

------

Britain's Prince Harry apologized after he was pictured on the front page of The Sun newspaper dressed up at a costume party as a Nazi soldier, triggering shock and revulsion.

Thursday's edition of the Sun features Prince Harry, younger son of Britain's Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, wearing a khaki uniform with an armband emblazoned with a swastika, emblem of the German WWII Nazi Party.

Harry, 20, who is third in line to the British throne after his father and his elder brother William, was also shown holding a cigarette and drink at a party which had the theme of "Natives and Colonials."

A spokeswoman for the royal family who was contacted by AFP read a statement of apology.

"I am very sorry if I caused any offense or embarrassment to anyone. It was a poor choice of costume and I apologize," Prince Harry said in the statement.

A source close to the royal family said the party took place sometime after January 1.

Jeff Barak, deputy editor of the Jewish Chronicle, told Sky News his reaction to the photograph was one of "shock and revulsion".

He said that going to a fancy dress party as a Nazi was "something that one does not do" and is "not a laughing matter".

"He has made a serious error," added Barak.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews welcomed the apology.

"We're gratified that the prince has apologized. The incident was in bad taste, especially in the runup to the Holocaust memorial day, which the royal family will play a leading role in commemorating," it said.

Holocaust memorial day is marked on January 27, the day in 1945 when the Soviet army liberated Auschwitz, the most infamous of the Nazi World War II concentration camps.

Commentators described the incident as a "public relations disaster".

Doug Henderson, Labour MP for Newcastle upon Tyne North and a former armed forces minister, said Prince Harry should not now be allowed to become a British Army officer.

"After the revelations this evening I don't think this young man is suitable for Sandhurst," the elite army officer training school, Henderson said.

"If it was anyone else the application wouldn't be considered. It should be withdrawn immediately," he said.

The Sun's royal photographer Arthur Edwards said he thought Harry had made a "huge, huge mistake" and was "stupid".

"He's quickly apologised but it is still a gross misjudgment," he added.

The Queen's former assistant press secretary, Dickie Arbiter, described the incident as "offensive", adding: "This young man has got to come up front and be seen in person making an apology."

Asked if there were any checks on what Prince Harry did in his private life, Arbiter told Sky News: "It would appear that there aren't, because if there were checks he wouldn't be allowed to go on like that.

"There is a lack of discipline, there is a lack of control.

"I'm sorry, (his father Charles) the Prince of Wales, he's a humanitarian and he does some terrific work, but I don't think he has the discipline, and the right discipline, over his children, particularly Prince Harry."

Andy Pike, from Unite Against Fascism, said: "Prince Harry has had a very expensive education, is supposedly fit to be an officer serving in his country's armed forces and one would assume he is not a complete idiot.

"One would be very surprised if he were not aware of the significance of wearing the swastika and the amount of offence that would cause.

"We believe it will offend the whole of the Jewish community and many others. It is extremely disrespectful to the millions of people that fought against fascism."

Pike said that because he is such a "very influential figure", Prince Harry must do more than apologize, and "distance" himself from the Nazis.

The Sun reported Harry, who is due to train at the Sandhurst later this year, was among 250 guests at the party for a friend's 22nd birthday party in Wiltshire.

His older brother William was also reported to have attended, dressed in a home-made lion and leopard outfit.

The newspaper said Harry's outfit of beige shirt and trousers and Nazi insignia had been the talk of party guests.

One shocked reveller told the Sun: "What on earth was Harry thinking of? A senior royal dressing up as a Nazi for a laugh? If that is his idea of a joke it went down like a lead balloon with many.

"There are a lot of old soldiers out there who will look at these photos of Harry dressed like this and be totally outraged."

He added: "The Nazis were responsible for the deaths of millions. To turn that into a jokey idea for a fancy dress is an absolute disgrace."

While what he did was stupid, I don't think The Sun and especially its photographers should be in the position to chastise anyone for making mistakes.

But that mistake was just stupid. And while unlike starts he couldnt really decide to be in the media's attention, he should've known that something like this would've gotten out.

Yes, I agree with you. I'm referring to the Sun being a tabloid with any shred of dignity.

EDIT: wtih=without.

I think a lot of you are letting this slide a bit too easily. This wasn't a "stupid mistake". Wearing a Nazi costume in public is not a mistake. That's a statement. I'm sure that once he realized people were disgusted by it, he tried to pass it off as a "joke". Bullshit. That's not a joke. There is no way in hell someone could think that would be potentially funny to anyone.

this reminds me of a funny monty python sketch:

The cast:
LANDLADY
Terry Jones
MR. JOHNSON
Eric Idle
PHILLIPS
Terry Gilham
HITLER
John Cleese
VON RIBBENTROP
Graham Chapman
HIMMLER
Michael Palin
YOKEL
Terry Jones
WOMAN
Eric Idle
UPPERCLASS
John Cleese
GUMBY
Michael Palin
CONSERVATIVE
Graham Chapman

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The sketch:
Knock. Door opens.
Landlady: Hello, Mr and Mrs Johnson? Mr Johnson: Yes, that's right. Yes.

Landlady: Oh, come on in. Excuse me not shaking hands, I've just been putting a bit of lard on the cat's boils. (Door closes)

Johnson: Thank you.

Landlady: Oh, you must be tired. It's a long way from Coventry, isn't it?

Johnson: Well, we usually reckon on five and a half hours and it took us six hours and 53 minutes, with the 25 minute stop at Frampton Cottrell to stretch our legs; and we had to wait half an hour to get onto the M5 at Droitwich.

Landlady: Really?

Johnson: Then there was a three mile queue just before Bridgewater on the A38. We usually come round on the B3339, you see, just before Bridgewater.

Landlady: Yeah. Really?

Johnson: We decided to risk it 'cause they always say they're going to widen it there. Yes, well just by the intersection there where the A372 joins up. There's plenty of room to widen it there, there's only grass verges. They could get another six feet, knock down that hospital. Then we took the coast road through Williton - we got all the Taunton traffic on the A358 from Crowcombe and Stogumber.

Landlady: Well you must be dying for a cup of tea.

Johnson: Well, wouldn't say no, long as it's warm and wet.

Landlady: Well come on in the lounge, I'm just going to serve afternoon tea.

Johnson: Very nice.

Landlady: Come on in, Mr and Mrs Johnson and meet Mr and Mrs Phillips.

Mr Phillips: Good afternoon.

Johnson: Good afternoon.

Landlady: It's their third time here; we can't keep you away, can we? And over there is Mr Hitler.

(In the corner are three German generals in full Nazi uniform, poring over a map.)

Hitler: Ach. Ha! Gut time, er, gut afternoon.

Landlady: Oho, planning a little excursion, eh, Mr Hitler?

Hitler: Ja, ja, ve haff a little... (to Himmler) was ist Abweise bewegen?

Himmler: Hiking.

Hitler: Ah yes, ve make a little *hike* for Bideford.

Johnson: Ah yes. Well, you'll want the A39. Oh, no, you've got the wrong map there. This is Stalingrad. You want the Ilfracombe and Barnstaple section.

Hitler: Ah! Stalingrad! Ha ha ha, Heinri...Reginald, you have the wrong map here you silly old leg-before-vicket English person.

Himmler: I'm sorry mein Fuhrer, mein (cough) mein Dickie old chum.

Landlady: Oh, lucky Mr Johnson pointed that out. You wouldn't have had much fun in Stalingrad, would you? Ha ha. (stony silence) I said, you wouldn't have had much fun in Stalingrad, would you?

Hitler: Not much fun in Stalingrad, no.

Landlady: Oh I'm sorry. I didn't introduce you. This is Von. Von Ribbentrop.

Johnson: Oh, not Von Ribbentrop, eh?

Ribbentrop: Nein! Nein! Oh. Ha ha. Different other chap. I in Somerset am being born. Von Ribbentrop is born Gotterdammerstrasse 46, Dusseldorf Vest 8.....so they say!

Landlady: And this is the quiet one, Heinrich Himmler.

Himmler: Pleased to meet you, squire. I also am not of Minehead being born but I in your Peterborough Lincolnshire was given birth to. But am staying in Peterborough Lincolnshire house all time during vor, due to jolly old running sores, and vos unable to go in the streets or to go visit football matches or go to Nuremburg. Ha ha. Am retired vindow cleaner and pacifist, without doing war crimes. Oh...and am glad England vin Vorld Cup. Bobby Charlton. Martin Peters. And eating I am lots of chips and fish and hole in the toads and Dundee cakes on Piccadilly Line, don't you know old chap, vot! And I vos head of Gestapo for ten years.(Hitler elbows him in the ribs) Ah! Five years! (Hitler elbows him again, harder) Nein! No! Oh. NOT head of Gestapo AT ALL! I was not, I make joke! (laughs)

Landlady: Oh, Mr Himmler. You do have us on! (Telephone rings) Oh excuse me. I'd better get that.

Johnson: How long are you down here for, Mr Hitler, just the fortnight?

Hitler: Vot you ask that for, are you a spy? Get on against the wall, Britischer Pig, you are going to die!

Himmler: Take it easy, Dickie old chum!

Ribbentrop: He's a bit on edge, Mr Johnson, he hasn't slept since 1945.

Hitler: Shut your cake-hole, you Nazi!

Ribbentrop: Cool it, Fuhrer cat!

Himmler: Ha ha, the fun we have!

Johnson: Haven't I seen you on the television?

Hitler, Vibbentrop, & Himmler: (hastily) Nicht. Nein. No.

Johnson: Simon Dee show, or was it Frosty?

Hitler, Vibbentrop, & Himmler: Nein. No.

Landlady: Telephone, Mr Hitler. It's Mr McGoering from the Bell and Compasses. He says he's found a place where you can hire bombers by the hour...?

Hitler: If he opens his big mouth again, it's Lapschig time!

Himmler: Shut up! Ha ha, hire bombers! He's a joker, that Scottish person.

Ribbentrop: Good old Norman!

Landlady: (to Johnson) He's on the phone the whole time now.

Johnson: In business, is he?

Himmler: Soon, baby!

Landlady: Of course it's his big day Thursday. They've been planning it for months.

Johnson: What's happening Thursday then?

Landlady: Well it's the North Minehead bye-election. Mr Hitler's standing as the National Bocialist. He's got wonderful plans for Minehead!

Johnson: Like what?

Landlady: Well, for a start he wants to annex Poland.

Johnson: North Minehead's Conservative, isn't it?

Landlady: Well, yes, he gets a lot of people at his rallies.

(Short scene cut: huge crowds outside going "Sieg Heil. Sieg Heil. Sieg Heil.")

Hitler: I am not a racialist, but...and dis is a big but...the National Bocialist party says that das (stream of German).

Himmler: Mr Hitler (Hitler slaps him) ...Hitler says historically Taunton is a part of Minehead already!

Hitler: Und der Minehead ist nicht die letze (stream of German)...in die Welt!

Crowd: Sieg Heil.

( Cut to interviews on the street: )

Yokel: Oi don't loike the sound of these 'ere Boncentration Bamps.

Woman: Well, I gave him my baby to kiss, and he bit it in the head!

Upper class: Well, I think he'd do a lot of good to the Stock Exchange.

Gumby: I THINK HE'S GOT BEAUTIFUL LEGS!

Conservative: (droning) Well... well... as the Conservative candidate I just drone on and on and on and on without letting anyone else get a word in edgeways, until I start to froth at the mouth and fall over backwards. Ooo-aaahhh. (THUD)

It doesn't seem like any big deal to me as long as he realizes now why people didn't like it. He's obviously just a clueless idiot, but who wouldn't be growing up in an insulated bubble like the royals do. I mean on the scale of things people like that tend to do when young, like run over people while drunk or something, this isn't that huge a deal. I was surprised to see CNN this morning quoting the Sun newspaper, pretty much removing what little was left of CNN's integrity.

Archie, to be fair to CNN, The Sun was the tabloid that carried the photo, but it's not like it's not legitimate.

Other than that, I agree with your comment. It's not as if one becomes an actual Nazi just by wearing the uniform.

At a costume party? How so? Yes, it's in poor taste, but in no way is it an actual endorsement.

At a Halloween party this year three of my friends were dressed as Arab terrorists. They're all Jewish. Take a wild guess whether they were endorsing Islamist views or not.

Make Shift, I'm not sure this guy knew what beliefs he was endorsing. If that sounds too stupid to be true, well, wearing a uniform like that does too, no?

At least we can now be sure that no Royal will wear another Nazi uniform again..for at least a few days.

A stupid act on his part. And I agree with those who are bashing The Sun. What a joke of a paper, but at least in their case, it's obvious, unlike some American outlets.

Completely different situation. The humor in that is clear and visible. The guy we're talking about is the definition of an aryan as far as looks go, and people know next to nothing about him. Again, there is no way he could have thought this would been seen as funny by anyone.

Also, what exactly does an Arab terrorist look like?

I'm sorry, box, but I just find that incredibly hard to believe. No matter how sheltered a person is, how could someone living in a sophisticated country in this day and age not know the history behind that? Indeed, wearing that uniform does seem too stupid to be true, but I have a sneaky suspicion it wasn't just a stupid move by a dumb teenager.

I do. You're giving people way too much credit, Make-Shift. There aresome who think the Holocaust is a Jewish holiday. And no, I'm not joking. Some others doubt it happened.

Thing is, there is a tendency for such symbols to change meaning and signify something other than their original meaning. The swastika prior to the Nazis was a religious symbol, and is still used frequently in Asia; if you check out some maps from there, you can see plenty of swastikas on there. They denote temples throughout the cities.

In the West, it's connection is firmer with the Nazis, but even there it's possible to overextend it's connotations. Consider this: Nazis= evil = bad. Swastika = symbol of Nazis = evil = bad. I want to be "bad", hm, let me have a swastika symbol on my uniform! There!

It's very possible.

He certainly is an idiot and a big embarassement, but I do not think that he was making any statement about his views. I know quite a couple of people who would do stuff like that and yet, at the same time, I know that they are as anti-Nazi as it gets.

He has proven that he has a poor taste and is not too bright. Thankfully, he is not the oldest son.

Prince Harry is known for his antics. This is hardly the first time he does something stupid.

Unlike his shy brother, Harry has made constant headlines for bad behaviour. In January, 2002, it was revealed that the prince had admitted smoking marijuana and allegedly engaged in underage drinking, in the summer of 2001, prompting the possibility of criminal charges being filed against him. Ultimately, a police investigation cleared Harry of wrongdoing. Charles was praised for his handling of the situation, which included taking Harry to visit a drug rehabilitation facility in London. [1] (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/1757448.stm)

The basement of Charles's Highgrove home is rumoured to be nicknamed Club H, an intimate and private nightclub for Harry and his friends.

On the morning of 21 October 2004, Harry got into a fracas with a paparazzo as he exited a Piccadilly Circus nightclub. After the story hit the tabloids, he issued a statement in which he stated that his behaviour had been "disappointing" and in which he publicly apologised to Charles.

On January 13, 2005, Prince Harry was pictured on the front page of The Sun newspaper, at a fancy dress party dressed in a Nazi costume, complete with a swastika armband. After the photo was made public, the Prince issued an immediate apology.

You doubt people of high stature can be ignorant? How about the American President? I'm sure someone can dig up some stuff about him in his youth that would display his ignorance.

Actually, I think you could dig up something about him during his presidency that would proof his ignorance.

A lot of people in prominent positions and in high stature are about as ignorant as the lowliest peasant there is out there.
