 The 'Big Love' Thread
HBO's newest drama series, Big Love, chronicling the life of a Mormon polygamist (Bill Paxton) and his three wives, played by Chloe Sevigny, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Ginnifer Goodwin, premieres on Sunday, following the big premiere of The Sopranos's sixth season.
And with HBO's marquee of shows having left and The Sopranos ending next year, I think the future of HBO, somewhat, is really riding on this show, especially with Rome not having been such a huge success.
I think the show looks good, and I've definitely seen more ads for it than I have for previous HBO outings. Reviews have been good, too.
Premieres Sunday, 10PM/9C.

It sounds interesting and the cast is great. I may catch it when HBO reruns it 43578945657 times.

I'll be watching.
I'm so pissed The Comeback didn't Come back (ouch). I want a DVD.
Rome isn't taking off? I thought it had a budget over 100m?
I miss the good old days when Sex and the City could be counted on.

Rome doesnt return till 2007. As for Big Love, I saw the previews and man has Jeanne Tripplehorn aged badly she looks like Carrot Top and Chloe looks like a meth-head. I think I'll pass on the show since it looks like an unrealistic portrayal of Mormopns who havent practiced polygamy for more than 100 years

Well, it did marginally well, and a second season was greenlit, but it never even came close to Sopranos, or even Six Feet Under, ratings.
I thought The Comeback was pretty good in its final episodes. I would have liked to have seen it return.

It was entertaining, but it wasn't quite as compelling as I thought it might be.
I'll still be watching, though.

The premiere was so-so, but last night's episode was pretty great, I thought.
Anyone else been watching...? :sigh:

I still watch it, but I'm hoping it gets better. Its not appealing to a broad audience.
I wonder how Mormons feel about this show. Any LDS folks care to comment?

I think the show's been a little meh so far. The first episode was all right, second episode was good, but the third episode was a little bad. I haven't watched last night's yet.
I think all the stuff at home dealing with the wives and Bill Paxton is when the show is at its best. But the other stuff like the compound thing hasn't really amounted to much. And the Bill vs. Nicki's dad plotline has felt incredibly contrived to me so far.

Despite a rough start, this little show has become one that I've started to really look forward to every week, which is more than I can say for a lot of the shows with which I've lost a lot of patience recently (Lost, etc.).
Anyone else stick with it?

I dont "stick with" any show, really, but I've seen quite a few episodes of this show through reruns and such. Not sure how many there have been, but I've probably watched 6 or 9 different episodes (though obviously not in order). I really really like it (enough to get me to search for this thread, anyway). It's funny (sometimes) and generally pretty compelling. It's like desparate housewives only they're all in the same house. Kinda. Anyway, yeah, it's a good show.

I'm out of town, so I didn't get to watch the finale yet.
It was a good season, though. I'm just wondering, like I said before, if this thing will be ignored by the Acadmey like I think it might be: Compared to other dramas on TV, even, say... Lost, it's dramatically slight.
With HBO having submitted the three actresses in the lead category and Bill Paxton not really all that impressive, the show has no acting chances, really. Not even supporting. All it really has are chances for writing and directing, but I think it will struggle for those, as well.

Avoiding all posts here. I just watched the first episode. I really loved it. I don't know why, either. It just hooked me. I wish I had been watching this when The Sopranos was airing. It could have taken the bad taste of The Sopranos out of my mouth. Don't get me wrong, I love The Sopranos. But Season 6 was far from their best year, especially with the boring finale. Seriously, fans of the show waited two years for NOTHING to happen on the 2006 finale?! Way to repay the audience.
Umm... this should be an "I Have Big Love" rant, but it's an "I Hated Season Six of The Sopranos" rant.
And the scenes with Lilly (Amanda Seyfried, or Sarah on Big Love) and Mac (Tina Majorino; not sure of her Big Love character name) from "Veronica Mars" were awesome for a VM fan like me.

The finale was impressive, X. I agree
The show has problems, but I like it a lot.
I hope next season we actually get some background on the family itself.

Finished Episode 2 ("Viagra Blue"), Episode 3 ("Home Invasion") and Episode 4 ("Eclipse"). Just started Episode 5. I'm really enjoying the show so far. I hope to see some Emmy love next Thursday.
Lilly, Mac, AND Beaver from Veronica Mars? Way cool.

So, in five episodes, I've heard "fuck" twice, and I have yet to see any female nudity, except for Chloe Sevigny wearing a shirt with no bra. Yet, I have seen Bill Paxton's bare ass in every episode.
I'm pretty sure this could be on the Disney Channel, with very little effort.
Except for the whole polygamy thing.

Loving it more and more!
Finished Episode 5 ("Affair"), 6 ("Roberta's Funeral"), and just finishing Episode 7 ("Eviction").

I've watched every episode up to Episode 11 ("Where There's A Will"). Settling in to watch the last episode of the season now.
Edit: Watched it. Loved the season. I'm really loving this show. And, as it seems, the show is in the running for the four leads and Best Drama at the Emmys. I won't be disappointed if it shows up for Drama. As for the leads, I don't think Paxton and Tripplehorn are as good as Sevigny and Goodwin. I might be alone on that, but I'd be happier to see the latter duo than the former duo.

Really? Tripplehorn is the only one I'd even consider for a nomination.
The show itself hasn't allowed for a lot of dramatic scenes in which the actors have been required to show a lot of range: It's a little too comedic and light for that. I also think Bill Paxton's line delivery is very unnatural, and Sevigny and Goodwin, while interesting characters, are rather one-note. And that's partly my problem with the show, in that it, at times, doesn't seem to be taking things seriously.
All the actors and the show itself made it into their respective top ten's and fifteen's, but I'd say none really have a shot at nominations.
Still, though. The show's totally addicting.

I've never been a huge fan of Bill Paxton's acting, even though I've liked a few of his movies (Twister, Club Dread). With people like Kiefer Sutherland, Hugh Laurie, James Spader, Matthew Fox, Peter Krause, James Gandolfini, Michael C. Hall, etc etc., he has no chance of a nomination, let alone a win.
So far, it's just a really good all-around show, even with the numerous flaws that it has. It's been picked up for a second season, right?
