Sure they can.

Nope. Fill in what you can. If you can't even put in one nomination for a few categories, that's fine. Just submit what you can.

I don't recommend it, but if someone did, I wouldn't oppose it.

Well, Gilmore Girls has been nominated for comedy since the start of these awards. Should we really change that now? If you guys think so, I'll go with it.

I would say drama, but it wouldn't change any of my nominations anyway.

I'm sticking with comedy.
And honestly, a move to the drama category (both at the Emmys and here, probably) would pretty much kill its chances at any recognition.

It doesn't have any chance either way. (At least at the Emmys)

Gilmore Girls is a comedy?
I never watched it but it always struck me as a drama, albeit a lightweight one.
It seems every hour long show should be considered a drama. I don't know how ABC got away with Housewives as a comedy at the Emmys but it seems as though that's the only excpetion for the time being. The only other show that could really argue for it (of the shows I'm familiar with) is Boston Legal. So, if that's considered drama, then everything should.
Overall, I just don't agree with the drama and comedy categories. Usually the tone of a series is the same throughout the season but if it happened to have more of a comedic tone one season and a serious tone another, I think they should be allowed to submit in different categories during the different year. And I am a HUGE opponent to the 'no matter what the character is, if the show is a drama he's counted under drama' rule. I think everyone should be submitted under the category that best serves the character. I'm talking more about the Emmys than our little awards here, but it's just something to consider
Well, I send mine in earlier today. Hope you got it X.
Was the deadline extended? And when can we expect to see the nominee ballot?
If anyone wants to see mine to get an idea, I'll be happy to PM or post it.

I guess a lot of it comes down to whether people see the show as a comedic drama (all dramas have a little comedy, but some in particular here might be Six Feet Under, Big Love, etc.) or a dramatic comedy, a la Gilmore Girls, Housewives, etc. -- both of which I do think are correctly placed.
But like you said, it could almost be judged on an episode-by-episode basis. Boston Legal, which I think is incorrectly placed in the drama category, does still has some episodes every once in a while that might be just as dramatic as, say, an episode of Big Love.
Lots of grey area.

Do you mean Boston LEgal is correctly placed in comedy? Or incorrectly. It seems, your statements contradict abit or I'm just too tired
I'd consider Housewives a comedic drama. The central stories for the main 3 women (I really don't know what the point of Teri Hatcher's character is aside from mindless entertainment and reeling in viewers) are all quite serious but every one of them is narrated in a light, comedic and sort of indirect way, each one a little more than the other. Then, again, that's almost the spelled out meaning of a satire
So, it depends what you consider a satire to be!
Oh, anyhoo. I watch everything for the drama and consider the comedy a plus. Maybe that's why I see everything with a bit of a drama bias
Even most of the comedies that I watch... however light and fluffy they are, I'm most gravitated towards them when they touch on serious issues.

You confused me for a second! (I cleared up my post, edited it like 20 times.)
But no, I was saying... Boston Legal, I think, has been incorrectly submitted as a drama, yet I'd still consider some episodes to fall under the drama category.

The deadline was extended to this weekend. I've been busy this week, so I forgot to open a thread in the Water Cooler until yesterday. I figure it's best to extend the deadline. I still intend to have nomination ballots and voting all finished before the Emmy nominations are announced in early July.
Later on, I'll post a list of who sent in ballots.

The thing is, Gilmore Girls was submitted as a drama for its first season. The people in charge have said in previous seasons that the only reason they're still submitting it as a comedy is because they made their choice in the second season and they're sticking to it. But it definitely now, and I believe always has, belonged in the drama category.

And yet, in the drama category, Gilmore Girls wouldn't stand a chance against perennial juggernauts like The Sopranos, Lost, 24, etc.
It'll already be hard enough for it to get anywhere in the comedy category, but it has a better shot up against stuff like Scrubs and Arrested Development than it does competing with, say, HBO dramas.

I will say, though, that even if the the show doesn't score a best comedy nom (it won't, and this was a weak year for the show anyway), I think Lauren Graham WILL be nominated this year.
Virtually every article I've read regarding the new voting system cites something like, "...to even out the playing field for performances like the oft-ignored Lauren Graham..."

But I don't understand why they should just be able to decide which category they want to be in. "Oh, this one has less competition this year, so let's go with this." How does that make any sense?

I read a really great article which said everything I think about that. Basically, SHUT UP about Lauren Graham. She doesn't deserve a nom. It's slightly possible that she did in past years, but this season, not at all. Particularly in the comedy category. If they wanted her to have a shot in hell, they'd stick it in drama.

It is a bit stupid, but if the network itself doesn't decide, that leaves the question of who does. The Academy? And how do they determine what constitutes comedy and what doesn't? A certain number of laughs?
The system is weird.

Any count on the ballots, X?
And if you need help tabulating or anything for that matter, after Thursday I'm completely free.

I'll have mine in at some point... I'm really struggling with some categories though (aka: Anything with comedy. The only comedy I watch is Entourage and a bit of Will & Grace and The Office from time to time.)

Just nominate Arrested Development and you'll be safe. (I actually had a pretty hard time with lead actress in a comedy.)
