Wow. Completely wow. I haven't been able to log into the site for days and although I am pissed, I am thoroughly thankful because it gave me the opportunity to try and get on other LOST forums and explore all the discussions out there rather than just rant and post in here!
I have so much to write about, it's not even funny!!
First off.... about the people on the raft and the lack of the sory behind that....
I knew weeks ahead that the first episode was going to deal completely with the hatch; the second with the raft and what happened to those who were on it; the third would introduce the tail end survivorsor at least Anna-Lucia. And I thought I posted that information here. That's why I wasn't expecting any revelations or follow up to the raft's demise and the characters' uncertainty.
Let's start with the actual episode and my thoughts on it.
Fucking brilliant episode. I'm sorry for anyone who was not totally and completely captivated by this amazing premiere. It was rather different that season 1 because it didn't feel like a full episode and it didn't have a real story. They were mearily continuing that fateful night's events! The cliffhanger to this week came at a point where we were just getting immensely confused about the new happenings. I think we got too spoiled on 2 hour events (premiere and finale) and this felt a litrle short! But, that said... it was pretty damn awesome.
I think the opening was very well done. You don't know how many people analyzed every bit and spec of each screnn cap, seconds apart and displayed their findings...
I was completely pissed off when I saw it was going to be another Jack flashback (his 4th versus some characters with 1). However, I cooled off when I saw it was his best flashback yet and also integral to the story of the hatch (Desmond). I don't know why Agentx was so disappointed. I mean the introduction of Desmond and his reveal in the end weren't more than 20 minutes apart; it's not like you figured out a clue that ruined an entire month's worth of episodes for you!
As for the hatch, Desmond, and all the possibilities: I am completely baffled. I don't know hwo they're goign to explain all of it without sort of ruining the show, although I know they will explain it very skillfully (I just don't know how). when I say ruining the show, I mean questions are undoubtedly going to arise from JAck asking Desmond how long he's been there, hwo he got there, where all the supplies and living equipment came from... how can we have a good explanation from Desmond (assuming it's the same Desmon, i'll get into that later) without him givign them a way off the island or an explanation of where they are....
Jack's mindset and views are really starting to piss me off (especially hwo he reacted to Hurley's story).
Charlie is by far the most annoying character for me now. Won't he just shut up about what he thinks? He used to be one of my favorites when everybody else hated him and now I can't stand him! The actor, however, is playing the character very well; I take it he's supposed to bring up this kind of reaction.
Now... without further ado...
The following is a hueg compilation of basic thoughts and discussion about the episode as well as pretty elaborate theories that might spoil some things for you (though producers kind of write them off), so read at your own risk... They are all, however, speculation and facts found from this episode alone... no actual spoilers from the writers or producers (until the very last part).
The man who died in the ER: the man who was driving the car that was hit by Sarah (Jack's patient and eventual wife) was identified as Adam Ruthrford, age 57 when his body was brough into the ER/OR. Adam Rutherford is Shannon's father (who had married Boone's dad, making the two step-siblings).
"QUARANTINE" on the hatch door: the word quarantine was written in the hatch door. quarantine is defined as isolating something or someone so that a disease or other agent does not spread. It would be logical to think that what is inside the hatch is being quarantined as to not spread throughout the island. But it seems as though it's the opposite... possibly the island is being quarantined and Desmond has isolated himself so as not to catch the disease that may have killed Rousseau's team.
What does Walt say: when Walt appears in the jungle to Shannon he seems to be moving his mouth but not really talkin or just whispering something incomprehendable. Many fans have taken what he utters, recorded it and reversed it, playing it backwards on whatever program they have. His words, played backwards say "Don't push the botton. No button's bad" Alot of sites and posters online claim he says "Push the bottun..." but it's possible they cut off the last milliseconds of sound (which would essentially be the first syllables he utters when played backwards). He is most probably referring to the "execute" button on the keyboard of the computer inside the hatch (which JAck was about to press and which Desmond did press earlier on)
Ongoing baseball hints: The first was of course 1)"That's why the Red Sox will never win the Series" said by Jack's father and by Jack himself. 2) Boone died in the episode in which (later named) Aaron was born. I am told that Aaron Boone is a baseball player!! 3) the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 are all the last 6 retired jersey numbers from the Yankees!
Does Desmond live alone?
There are quite a number of hints in the opening that suggest Desmond does not live alone. these were all backed up by screen caps (still images from the episode). 1) He wakes up from the top bunk of a bunk bed. The bottom bunk has books at its head while the top also may have books but where a little lamb is clearly visible. 2) there is a backgammon set on the table, a game for two. 3) Magazines on both sides of the table (the table refers to the table that he picks up the bowl and oragne juice from). 4) Table tennis table with an extar racket (I actually did not catch this image). 5) He makes a smoothie for himself for breakfast but moments earlier cleaned up from the table a bowl and some OJ, possibly breakfast for another individual living there.
Could his other room mate have been Ethan?
The mystery of 108 and speculation of a Mirror Theory:
the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 all add up to 108. 108 is the number that was written on the mural that Jack was looking at inside the hatch (it was actually written more than once on that wall). 108 is also, supposedly, the number of sins. I's also the number of beads in a rosary and the basis for many, many other religious (not only christian, actually predominantly non-christian) beliefs or thoughts or objects...
If you add up the individual numbers in the number 108 (1+0+8) you get 9! The number nine is the only number (I
think it's the only one) who multiples on the multiplication table are exact mirrors of each other. Read on, you might not have gotten it...
9x1=09
9x2=18
9x3=27.....
All the reslulting multiples are... 09, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90... which are mirror images of each other...
09 to 90, 18 to 81, 27 to 72, 36 to 63, 45 to 54!!
New theories (some believed to be hoaxes as well as some with factual evidence backing it up) suggest the msytery of the island has something to do with mirror images or thoughts. Possibly, all the survivors have mirror images or twins of themselves on the island (though they look nothing alike). 2 different people who are essentially the same or quite possibly the exact opposite of each other. Desmond may be JAck's mirror image/twin... the title Man of Science/Man of Faith could be pointing at Jack/Desmond (remember Desmond was going to be a doctor) and not necessarily Jack/Locke!
Genetic Mirror Theory
Okay... I read this one theory online at the abc Lost forums and it's almost dead on with the show, or does it fit too well?
A poster claimed he has this book ( a very rare book) in French by an author (also a mathematician) Marseille Rousseau.
He has written about this naturally occuring theory that explains the number 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. It's called Roussau's Genetic Mirror Theory. It claims everyone in the world has an exact twin somewhere, but you never encounter this person, by laws of probability and other naturally occuring phenomenon. He used a set of numbers to explain his thoery.
4 is the degrees of separation Roussau believed that everyone in the world is connected by four different people. So you could meet yourself using 4 different peole connected to you. Example: your brother's, boss's, neighbor's nephew know your mirror.
8 sytands for the eith continent, the place you can meet your mirror. He calculated it to be somwhere in the South Pacific.
15 stands for the chances you actually meeting yourself on this place, 15 out of 4,815,162,342.
16 stands for the maximum amount of people that could encounter their twin at the same time. (think about the number of characters as it grows and gets killed)
23 is the number of years apart your twin and yourself are.
42 stands for the maximum number of years your twin and yourself could be alive at the same time.
There's slightly more to the last few that I didn' type up. Readin/posting it now it does actually sound more prepostrous than when I originally read it. But there were arguments pages and pages long of people believing this could eb the basis of some of the ideas on Lost and others disputing the factual evidence behind it. The poster kept assuring us he had the book with him but was reluctant to give out an isbn number and didnt know if he could post a pic of the book or not. He kept telling everyone to spread it around. Nobody found any search results to either the author or the book. I do believe this was a haox theory. (lol, sorry to waste your time if you read into it with detail).
But the following is a theory that has (f)actual basis and could in fact be the basis of the creators' idea behind LOST...
So, read at your own risk, again I remind you
There was a scientist named Dr. John Desmond Bernal who in 1929 proposed the "bernal sphere" which would be a type of space habitat intended as a long-term home for permananet residents. This sphere or what have you is actually found to be quite discussed and proposed about by scientists. There are details as to how it would function and a was linked to a site that has pictures of what it could look like; apparently it would resemble a valley running all around the equator of the sphere. Bernal's first version was dubbed "Island One" and two following designs were named "island Two" and Island Three". Some poster also brought it to attention that when Rousseau (from Lost) came or possible what Sayid took from her were maps of three islands (I still have to look back and watch if that was true..)
But, basically it could very possibly be what the island is and very possibly not!
And now, I do have actual quotes from the producers of the show that rule out three possible endgames but also provide the biggest spoiler for the series yet... (I don't know why they dropped this bomb or if they did it on purpose to lead us away). again, be wartned, this is actually straight from the horses' mouths...
It's from the NY Times and Lindelof and producer Carlton Cuse talk. Cuse says, "the castaways will not learn that they are part of some dastardly experiment (kind of ruling out the last theory I posted if you consider it an experiment), discover that they are in purgatory, or wake up from a bad dream. these guys get off the island..." then they both say in unison "if it's an island" [freaky music] duhn duhn duhn [/music]
