Drone Memo
http://news.yahoo.com/drone-strikes-tar ... 14372.htmlQuote: “this memo ... basically gives the government carte blanche to target Americans in whatever it considers to be the battlefield for almost any kind of ‘threat’ it imagines.”
Other conservatives noted that the memo could well have been drawn up by the administration of George W. Bush.
But the scope of US targeted killings – some 3,500 over the years, in an estimated 420 strikes, according to the Council on Foreign Relations – is so large that for some members of Congress simply shifting responsibility for the program may not be enough.
Here is the memo: http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/msnbc/secti ... _Paper.pdfImo, I think its quite hypocritcal of Obama and his supporters... They railed against Waterboarding saying it was against American values.,, While, drone strike anyone who we see as a threat anywhere even Americans is fine... I just think it is not fair for Obama to get a pass on this issue just because he represents a party you like... Let us be honest, if a Republican was doing this and I do remember back in the days on this board, you guys would be attacking him saying he was a war criminal and such. Of course, i am not saying Obama is like that at all... I think Drone strikes are legit, I just think the manner they are done with no checks and balances is wrong...The funny thing is, it is Obama who was encouraged and supported this program.... I just find is a bit sad that the same users who daily were go against the Bush Adminisration for torture are now silent about this...

Re: Drone Memo
Drones have nothing to do with American values.

Re: Drone Memo
Because you're torturing human beings?
We've always killed people.

Re: Drone Memo
I see torturing Terrorists is wrong.. However, Launching drone strikes killing terrorists or potential terrorists and anyone who is with them who can be completely innocent as well.... Look I think my point is not that I think Obama will use such drone powers incorrectly. Its that imagine in the future, a President can label anyone a threat to America, even an American Citizen and say bye bye... It is a power that is just open to misuse, and if Barrack Obama was a responsible leader should put limits on such powers before he leaves.

Re: Drone Memo
Government has long ago jumped the shark on limiting its own power. The people must force them to do it, by any means necessary.

Re: Drone Memo
We live in a different world now. I am okay with drone strikes if it means we won't send troops into some of these countries.

Re: Drone Memo
It does make sense...
Our current Military way of thinking was more suited for massive battlefields then covert operations.

Re: Drone Memo
I would prefer a strike by a UAV over boots on the ground or indiscriminate bombing. The more precise the bombing, the more people seem to care, which makes no sense. Further, I am ok with targeting U.S. citizens abroad so long as they fall into the powers granted by Congress to the President under the AUMF on September 14, 2001. Of course, the outward bounds of that Authorization are being severely strained in some of the areas we are targeting and completely passed in others.
Basically, we are only supposed to target "those nations, organizations, or persons [the President] determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons."
One area where I mostly agree with the President.

Re: Drone Memo
But of course there is now the possibility of drone strikes by terrorists. Anyone can build a RC copter or plane.
