Fantasy Box Office: Opinions and Help Needed!
What I want: Your opinion! I am making this up as I go, lend me your brain and help me figure out how this would work!
What I have so far:
The basic idea: You have a league of 8-16 people, you each draft actors, actresses, directors, etc and create a team. Each day the money brought in by your team is added to your coffers. At the end of the season, the team with the most money earned wins.
Think of this like fantasy football for movies.
Example Team Lineup: Director Producer / Executive Producer Actor Actress Actor/Actress Actor/Actress Cinematographer Screenwriter Production Company Theatrical Distribution Company
Bench There will also be 'bench' slots, and you'll be allowed to update your starters. I haven't decided if you should be able to update starters monthly, weekly, maybe you get 1 update a week, I'm just not sure yet.
Open Questions 1) How often should you be able to update your starters who earn you money on a daily basis? 2) In a league using the default settings, what should the duration of the season be? 3) In a league using the default settings, how many active slots should each team have and what different roles should each team be required to fill?
General Issues You need enough active slots to make a 8-16 person league competitive. You want to get to the point where everyone isn't just picking people from the tentpoles, you'd also want people to have to dig into the second tier of films.
Commish Powers - The commish can set number of teams in league - The commish can choose a draft time and date - The commish can choose the number of total roster positions on each team - The commish can choose what the starter composition needs to be for each team

Re: Question about a Box Office Game
Would this somehow link to real life events? or is who earns the money totally random?

Re: Question about a Box Office Game
It would be based on daily box office. So you'd be drafting a team based on movies coming out during the season and how well you thought they'd do.

Re: Question about a Box Office Game
Would our actors, directors, actresses have to be starring in movies for that season or would we just link them to a movie regardless of it they are in it?
And are players allowed to pick someone elses' actor, director or actress?

Re: Question about a Box Office Game
During the draft, you each take turns selecting actors, directors, actresses. Once someone is selected, they can't be selected by anyone else. Your team only makes you money for movies they are in, you don't get to assign them to anything.

Re: Question about a Box Office Game
So if my team has, say, Liam Neeson, and he releases two films which earn a combined 150 million during the specified period, my team adds 150 million to our total?
Sounds simple and fun. I would participate.

Re: Question about a Box Office Game
How would cameo's work? If I picked say, Sam Jackson, and let's say he's only in Captain America 2 for like, one scene, would I still get credit for it?

Re: Question about a Box Office Game
The idea is that each role would earn a specific portion of a films box office haul. So a director may get 20%, an leading actor may get 30%, a supporting actor 5%, a cinematographer 1%, etc. Percentages and such are tbd, it's just a concept at the moment.

Re: Question about a Box Office Game
Interesting. As long as you made it a flat percentage and not a fluctuating depending on star power.

Re: Question about a Box Office Game
I'm up for just about any type of box office game.
It will take a lot of work to run this type of game though. 1. pre-determining lead/supp roles for all films in a season before the draft. This may not HAVE to be done, but it probably should. 2. keeping the game up-to-date as it goes. Should probably be done on a weekly basis with a big spreadsheet.
Say it started now and the season ended Dec.31 and I picked Tom Hanks. Would I get credit just for the film that opens during the season (Saving Mr. Banks), or would I also get credit for what Captain Phillips makes after the start of the season even though it was released before the season?

Re: Question about a Box Office Game
Sounds like a fine game. I'd be interested to read the rules when it's launched, but I cannot guarantee being a player.

Re: Question about a Box Office Game
SolC9,
From the players perspective, they would create a league with friends, draft their teams, and then make any team updates they wish as the season moves on (trades, picking up unselected talent, modifying their active roster, etc).
The game itself would show the amount earned by each team daily, it would do all the calculations, no tracking would be required. The game will also know what people fall into what categories, and would be automatically updated with new actors, etc.

Re: Question about a Box Office Game
If everything works out, I don't want to stop at just one game. I want to offer a whole slew of automated games, so if anyone has any ideas for a game based on box office data, drop me a PM!

Oh really!? I'm not interested in one on the forum. If there's one on the main site just like BOM then I'd be up for it.

Look at the header, click the 'DERBY' link. It's not on the forum.

Re: Question about a Box Office Game
I wonder how you'd decide the order of people picking actors.
