 Site Game
Is there going to be a main site game any time soon?
I thinkt that will help the site a lot. Just wondering.

I'm not too fond on RT game, prefer something with strong facts, like bo numbers. :-)
Something Derby like, but could have some differences.

Yes, that was what I was thinking. Like something like derby or the UFC at BOF

You joined the forum today ... already have a tight avatar ... already are making helpful threads in "the site" section.
Can we clone more members like you?

Exactly. Misutaa rocks and will definitely be on my best newcomer list in the next poster award.

As for "Derby" like game.
We are not going to steal BOM's game, and put it up on our site.
The RT game will be online soon (read withing two weeks), and we can allways develop a new game.
Infact I am going to turn this thread into discussion FOR the new game. Help us come up with an idea you find interesting. We wont gaurentee to put it into action, but if it moves us enough .. we may just design it.

i've thought about these games a lot.
to be honest, i may even require the help of someone whos good at programming for something like this. the RT game was simple. These derby type b o games ... no. i worked on a few models. So if someone is willing to cook up an idea and another person can help design it with me, i'll put it on the queue of things that i'm suppose to do.

The problem with the RT game is that the rating and score change overtime, so you can't do a precise ranking system, unless we say that we will just use the ratings at the end of Tuesday after first weekend for each movie.

I've been thinking the things we can predict about a movie:
1. Weekend gross - BOM Derby already does that; we can do smaller movies outside the top 10, but not many people are interested in predicting those
2. Daily gross - pick a day; not as fun as predicting weekend, and the unpredictable/surprise factor is basically gone; can't see much interest
3. Overall gross - David is running such a game in the forum; it also has the problem of that you can't determine the weekly winner/ranking right away.
4. PTA - possible; have direct positive correlation with each movie's weekend gross; analogous to derby predictions.
5. Theater Counts - another possibility; can also make analogy to derby.
6. Multiplier - the range is small (2.1-3.8), and quite predictable as well, so not an interesting one.
Overall, I'll probably be most interested in doing PTA predictions for the top 10 movies each week (it's not the same as predicting top 10 PTAs).

I agree with you on number 1,2,3, and 6. Theater Counts won't work because est. are released early.

If we do, it won't be just for the openers, but for the holdovers as well. Overall, I agree it's not that interesting to predict whether a movie will drop 1000 or 100 theaters this weekend. Most of us have pretty good idea anyway.

I'll try to think of something over night. Because if its something new and unique it will be soo much better and more attracting to newcomers. I'm pretty sure that there are a lot of creative people on this forum to think of something new.

Hmm. How about something like the early game, where we predict movies for movies a certain amount of time in advance.
It's interesting because you have no data, no theater count; nothing.

What's that? Do you predict a movie a week before?

In MG Casey's game in the box office games section (which you should join, by the way...great game!), you predict next week's openers a week early. If we do need an idea for the site, something along those lines would be interesting. We could predict maybe a month in advance. Like, in July, predict all the August movies. In August, predict all the September movies; etc.

Well I think the weekend box office is fun ... we just need a new direction for the game. The derby is a continuous game, we could do something more like ... say ... the NCAA tournament.
Have people eliminated, or simply have the game only last for so long (a season?) before it closes. If we also added other twists, it could work rather well ... the problem is, what twists to the game could we add?
Maybe a cross between 1 and 2-6 is in order? I don't really know.

That would be great. Have it like the derby, but the lowest one gets kicked out ever week, so you can't have a bad week.

We could always do another World Cup, where 32 people get divided into 8 groups, and the players will have match play with each other, then we get to elimination and such. However, that will cause more people to play in more weeks than others. I'd rather to have a game where each week everybody who entered will play. So I propose to do a league format such as English Premier League/NBA/MLB does. We'll have a set number of players and set number of weeks. Players will play each other, then we can have a playoff and crown the champion each season.

We could take "season" literally and make the regular season last 3 months. I'd prefer a little longer such as 16 or 18 weeks, at least as long as a NFL regular season. We could have the similar divisional format as well.
