Xiayun, your great. I love the idea. I think that if it happens, it will be the best.

Yeah, league sounds great, number of players shouldn't matter that much.

Number of players, we would start off small and then increase accordingly.

My Idea for a game goes like this.

Game's First Season Starts:

For a small time span (most likely 4 weeks) everyone predicts the weekend on the main site.
  • Each Weekend will produce someone who wins that week, that person gains automatic admission into the "finals"
  • After the 4 weeks, we will have 4 people gaurenteed spots. (If one person wins more than once, noone gains the automatic admission and we will only have 3)
  • There will be an arbitrary number of other spots available. For this example we will say 32 total spots. 4 are taken by the automatic exemptions. The remaining other spots will come from the averaged derby percent over the 4 week time. The top 28 people from the 4 week time (excluding those with automatic exemptions) will also gain entry to the finals.

Now the Finals beings, but the regular derby does not stop, rather it resets. For the weeks it takes to reduce 32 to 1, the KJ derby will continue, and will create the entry feild for the next season.

Here is how the "finals" would go:
  • The 32 people are broken into 2 Groups. Group A and Group B.
  • Group A and Group B are then broken into 4 divisions of 4 people each.
  • Within the 4 divisions everyone will play everyone twice. (this takes 6 weeks)
  • Top 2 from each group will advance (tiebreaker would be head to head first, followed by overall % for the 6 weeks of group play)
  • Now starts the tournament ... there will be 16 entrants. Everyone will be seeded from 1-16. It will be done in bracket form.
  • First week of the torunament takes us from 16 to 8 players. (7 weeks to this point)
  • Second week of tournament takes us from 8 to 4 players. (8 weeks to here)
  • For the final 4 round I would probably average prediction percentage over a two week time. Reducing feild to 2. (10 weeks)
  • The final round would probably also be averaged over a two week time, crowning us a champion. (12 weeks)

The Champion would gain entry to the next seasons tournament automatically.

Now it would be ideal to extend this one more week, to allow for 4 seasons in a year.

The beauty of the game is that even while only 32 people are playing for the championship, everyone else is playing for entry the next season. Every week becomes a new game, because the #1 position gets you into the tournament. Because of this you can only play the last week, and still manage to get into the tournament. Missing a week will not eliminate you.

Tell me what you think ... offer changes, and suggestions.[/list]

Wow, that took me a while to digest. So let's suppose I did really bad over the first 4 weeks and didn't get into the tournament, the idea is I can still predict the following week, right? And if I win that week (5th week overall), when will I get a chance at entering the tournament?

Actually .. the 4 weeks would only be there for the first season.

I need a way to start the game without having a full 13 week season of just derby predicting.

The 4 weeks are thus not included in the time frame.

But .. say you don't make it in the 4 weeks.

After those 4 weeks, the derby will reset, and everyone will start from scratch, and the top 32 go onto the tournament. The derby resets and we start over, selecting 13 weeky winners (who gain entry into the NEXT seasons tourney) and the overall rankings which will fill out the feild.

I see. That sounds great. One week elimination for the round of 16 and quarterfinals is pretty brutal, but it adds the March Madness flavor.

Well, I need to add an extra week somewhere to make 13 weeks (so there can be 4 even seasons in a year).

I am looking for feedback, changes and suggestions so if anyone has them, nows the time.

Some day I'd like to see a game that severely punishes players for guessing under. Because that is the tactic that is most commonly used. Imagine if you automatically got a zero for that movie if you under guessed it, would spice things up a bit.

Whatever you choose, do one that doesn't require tons of people to play because I doubt you will get many at first.

I like the idea of league play of some kind.

One way to make underpredicting have similar risk as overpredicting is to always use the lower number as denominator. Let's say the movie grossed 40M and one predicted 30M, instead of getting a score of 1 - (40-30)/40 = 75%, the player will get 1 - (40-30)/30 = 66.7%. With this method, it becomes possible that the player can still get 0% if he/she underpredicted a movie by more than 50% (predicted 5 and actually grossed 10), where it wasn't before.
