Its easy....I had the same problem
Just go to a website...get the pic you want as your avatar, Right click the pic you want....click properties....coy the URL link.....paste it in the "offline" box in your profile and click submit

If you want to modify a picture or something, do it using a Paint program or whatever, then register on that site, and it's fairly simple. I use it for all my pictures.
