 Bad Movies as Comfort Food
Anyone else have movies they end up rewatching even though they find them objectively bad?
I basically hated Ready Player One when it came out, still think it’s seriously flawed & dumb, but find myself watching it more frequently than any other movie in a long time. What’s wrong with me?

Adam Sandler's movies pre 90s - mid 2000's for me. Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer are really understated comedic classics.

A movie is not bad if it brings enjoyment. All this does is highlight one as a snob. A low-level snob, but still a snob, which is kind of a pathetic trait to behold.
If Ready Player One is seriously flawed and dumb yet it brings you enjoyment (clearly it does as you watch it a lot - unless you have self-harm tendencies) then it has done its job as entertainment.

Now Waterboy to Grown Ups, there's definitely some fun films that were ripped to shreds by critics but Sandler was unstoppable back then (Well I can safely say Little Nicky is not a guilty pleasure of mine)

I watch at least five terrible shark movies every year. Every now and then there's a good one, but even in the bad ones it is fun to watch people get chomped.

Algren wrote: A movie is not bad if it brings enjoyment. That’s just not true. You’re completely collapsing the possibility for nuance, complexity, and paradox. You’ve never had a good time watching an awful movie? So bad it’s good? There can be tons of enjoyment from the masochistic cringey schadenfreude of watching an utter trainwreck. The anger and hilarity a terrible movie evokes can be tons of fun… that doesn’t in any way mean it’s “good.” Another example for me is Jupiter Ascending. It is so amazingly terrible, I love to revisit it every once in a while. Algren wrote: All this does is highlight one as a snob. Hey snowflake, don't ask what's wrong with you if you can't take the truth.
