Movie endings with the worst theatre audience reactions?
What movie ending had the worst theatre reaction (that you have personally witnessed or perhaps reacted to yourself)?
I've heard of stories of people walking out in droves, throwing food at the screen, shouting at the screen or demanding their money back. Though I've never personally witnessed that.
I have witnessed film endings where the audience murmurs or rambles in disappointment - such as the abrupt ending of No Country for Old Men (which I loved) or The Hulk (2003) which most of the audience seemed to hate.

Any film where the protagonist loses is going to have an iffy reaction. Abrupt endings usually go with that line of storytelling. If a character people like is going to die you have to sell it as a win, ala Maximus being reunited with his family.

I've never seen people walk out of a movie. Matrix Reloaded's cliffhanger was awful, and my god Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes. Infinity War got unintelligent movie goers a little upset, but that was done well so I wouldn't include that.
I would assume Butch and Sundance, Thelma and Louise, Elephant Man, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Green Mile, any sad ending, etc. Marley and Me.
War of the Worlds. Inception, Next (Dam that ending fucking pissed me off, really you can't even do a 10 minute rap up to your big twist, you're barely a 90 minute movie!)
And of course The Mist, Cast Away (What a lame ending) someone brought up You've Got Mail recently. This year has to go to Harley Quinn. That horrible movie ending that films like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Pineapple Express constantly spoof now. Even Avenger's Schwarma post credit scene was better than that.

Mother!
Even tho it is probably my fave JLAw performance and an amazing movie. Watching it at the theater, it had an awful reaction

I really wish I would've seen it opening weekend but The Devil Inside has some of the worst reactions for an ending EVER. Saw it the middle of the week after opening weekend and there was hardly anyone in the theater. There was a "link" to go for more information about the fictional case and it was just a random promotional link that was just insulting.

People are calm here in Singapore so we don't get much audience reactions. Back in India the crowd is much more vocal but mostly only for Hindi movies and general boos and eruptions of disgust 2-3 times a movie are quite common there.

I remember pretty negative reactions to The Village, even though it's not THAT crazy.
The Break-up didn't seem to have great reactions either, even though the movie already warned you it was a break-up. I think most in my theater were expecting something more romantic.

Wasn't the village's twist in the middle of the movie? It's been forever since I've seen that one.
Re: Movie endings with the worst theatre audience reactions?
Nah, it's pretty close to the end.

The Village's twist was dumb, but people expect a twist from M Night and I think the reception would have somehow been even worse without it. The twist completely ruins any rewatch of the movie though - it's impossible to take any of it seriously. Same with Shutter Island.
Re: Movie endings with the worst theatre audience reactions?
I DISAGREE ON BOTH. I love them both and the twist lets me try to figure out if I can spot anything that gives it away.

I feel like there was a mid-movie twist too— when it was revealed that the “monsters” that terrorized the village were guys in costume. Though I haven’t seen it in forever.
Re: Movie endings with the worst theatre audience reactions?
The thing that happened in the middle of the movie was the stabbing of Joaquin. The twist of it being in present day and the parents doing the scaring wasn't revealed until the end.

You could have added Titanic to the list. And Gone With the Wind. And Schindler's List. Saving Private Ryan. Etc, etc.
People love sad or bittersweet endings, when they are done right. Your own list includes some of the most beloved endings of all time, with films that have always had tremendous WOM.

Re: Movie endings with the worst theatre audience reactions?
Lol. Of course the ones in the second sentence are jokes. Those are films where the endings elevate the movie. But I wouldn't be surprised, I am always dumbfounded by someone who "hates" a movie because it ends on a downer. Recent example would be Rogue One. Not that I'm a huge fan of it, but seriously why would anyone expect a different ending?
The ending of Titanic is leagues better than the one originally shot.
Re: Movie endings with the worst theatre audience reactions?
My own worst reaction was after Eragon. I punched the exit door open after bolting out after the tease at the end. I was so disgusted by that adaptation. The most vocal disapproval I remember experiencing was the end of Fellowship of the Ring. Idiots. Where was Jackson supposed to cut it off?
While Eragon was awful, the worst movie with zero value I've ever seen is Battlefield Earth. But it was a bonus promotion that I didn't pay for so it didn't get the same reaction from me as Eragon.
I didn't see The Mist in the theater, but I LOVED the ending and laughed and clapped when I watched it at home.

Why is that? I think it's clear that Jackman is going to be saved.

Re: Movie endings with the worst theatre audience reactions?
I think endings like that tend to be poorly received by GA though, like The Grey obviously he dies, people don't like endings that don't end without the final scene shown. That whole Sopranos ending type thing, GA are not a fan of the ambiguous.

The Village got hostile reactions during the fade to black. I personally loved the surprise ending to Split but it left people unfamiliar with Unbreakable confused. I recall hearing mild confusion.
