I was hoping, well expecting really, a lot more from it. Algren liked it, but it simply didn't resonate with me.

Once you get over the surprise that it's not a historical drama about The Great Wall of China but instead is a Chinese legend about monsters attacking China, I believe you can enjoy the film. Though it helps if Chinese culture appeals to you. The trailer accurately sells it, but in terms of quality, I believe it undersells the film.

Glad you enjoyed it. It is a fun film despite not being released in the summer or afterwards and not being as good as the previous ones.
