 Dark Tower (2017)
I was surprised there was a thread for this since it was filming. It has a good cast with Mathew McConaughey and Idris Elba. Also reading some articles it sounds like it is more of a sequel (which makes sense if you know how the books end). I am guessing they will take a different take of the books but hopefully end the series right. There are some cool images here http://www.superherohype.com/news/37737 ... t#/slide/1

 Re: Dark Tower (2017)
A sequel to what?
And what's up with McConaughey recently? Where's the hunk gone?

I'm kind of surprised they didn't go the tv route since they can easily fill the void with Game of Thrones ending soon and Outlander being a success.

 Re: Dark Tower (2017)
Weren't they always making a film and then continuing it as a TV show?

CBS just announced that Wizard and Glass will be a companion series to air in 2018, presumably online (much like the new Star Trek), and starring Idris Elba. So I guess the TV thing did end up happening, although it's still early to say it'll happen. The movie will need to be excellent and successful before a companion series (and presumably, sequels) happens.

 Re: Dark Tower (2017)
I started reading The Gunslinger the other day. Halfway through it doesn't seem like an expensive movie to make. And the story isn't as epic as I expected it to be. It's very small scale so far. Just waiting for the goddamn thing to escalate. It has to, right?

I hope it succeeds.

 Re: Dark Tower (2017)
Ha ha?
Anyway I read The Gunslinger. I don't see how that can ever be a mainstream success. It's not a bad book, but it's really not something that can be made into a mainstream success movie. So it's good they're doing whatever adaptation/sequel means.

 Re: Dark Tower (2017)
I read more about this in Entertainment Weekly, and I'm really excited if it's done right. But the likelihood of that is so slim. Stephen King adaptations when they hit, they hit BIG (The Shining, Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile), but when they miss... yikes. I just think the scope is too big for The Dark Tower to really succeed. It needs the love and care of the LOTR and Potter franchises, but it won't get that and it won't be anywhere near as successful. It's just too epic to work.
But the first movie on its own could be good. Just don't think it will prove successful enough to properly expand the universe.

 Re: Dark Tower (2017)
So it's a bit over 3 months before the movie release and they still don't have a trailer out. I'm sure this is getting pushed back. They had to have at least a teaser by now.

Probably going to come out in the next few days, perhaps next 2 weeks. Remember we had a similar situation with Bourne last year having a subdued campaign.

 Re: Dark Tower (2017)
I'm pretty sure that a bit ago a trailer leaked and was taken down.
Ghostbusters came out in July and had no trailer till March. Dark Tower can do without a trailer till the end of April.

 Re: Dark Tower (2017)
Bourne = sequel of a successful and well established franchise Ghostbusters = reboot of a hugely successful classic The Dark Tower = complete wildcard
See the difference?

 Re: Dark Tower (2017)
So what the fuck went wrong with this movie? It seems so botched it's almost like Sony was actively trying to make it suck? There's no reason this couldn't have been successful with more care. Why didn't they just follow the damn bookend make it great? It's always baffling when Hollywood takes a beloved book and ruins it. Just make it like the book that people already liked and your almost home free (I know there are a few movies just like the book that suck.)

 Re: Dark Tower (2017)
That's what happens when you hire a director with zero Hollywood experience.

The thing is the first book is really not the one to be made into a mainstream success movie. It can be a great movie, but everything in it is really small scale and there are so little hints for everything to come. If they adapted only the first book I don't think it would o much more than $60-$80m total in the US. The wonders of the Mid-World really start from book 2. So I do get what they tried to do with the movie, but I never thought it would backfire this much.
